The whole app drawer thing kinda threw me off a bit. I was confused why the phone was creating duplicates of my apps. Turns out it creates shortcuts on the main screen, and then you have the actual apps in the app drawer which was kinda confusing.

You can turn off 'add to home screen for new apps' in Play Store app settings. In trying to make it basic and familiar for iPhone users it can seem redundant. Most experienced users usually have that option disabled and only place often used apps on the home screen. Right now it seems foreign since you're used to iOS only but give it some time and you'll find things make a lot more sense.
