Hard drive is not dead, i think its something with the os, i got to boot back into the original state the OS was before i tried the installation. Also i tried it a few more times with no luck, thinking it was the disk i made an image onto a usb stick with still no luck when i try to enter the utilities of the disk to format, it still would not let me, it would restart and always sit at that one screen.

Also question if i use carbon copy and its under 16gb worth of stuff... will a usb stick at 16gb capacity be big enough instead of me getting a external hard drive, because it seems like i already wasted 30 bucks on this os.

Why don't you use the optical drive in iMac? Is it broken?

Should be fine. SL only requires 5GB.

which optical drive in imac?

Although it depends on what iMac it is, there should be an optical drive in the right-hand-side of the machine (just a small cut, it's slot-loading).

you mean the cd rom? I did use it threw the cd rom and then i thought maybe something was wrong with the disk so i tried the usb stick method, which all files copied over but still wouldnt install or let me go into the utilities.

Question with carbon copy cloner can i back up a few files and transfer them over?
