Have you found nothing that is a decent alternative to Talkatone, yet? I wonder if apps like Burner would work any better.

Unfortunately, i have to carry two iPhones. One (iPhone 6) has 10 dollars per month with 50 minutes and 50 text and I brought add on for 500 Canadian call minute for 20 dollars. That should last me for while. I also carried iPhone XR with data only plan. Cost me 15 dollars a month for 3GB data.

I used to carry one Android devices with dual SIM capability. Unfortunately, I am using prepaid carrier, dual SIM iPhone not work well.

Not every time but I can only have it working on one non phone device at a time, say mu ipad or my MacBook (desktop client), not both at the same time. It still works with my iPhone and ipad at the same time.

Just downloaded for for my iPad. You get notifications when somebody texts you? Do you use the main WhatsApp on your phone and this app on your iPad?

Messenger and WhatsApp are both Facebook owned and controlled apps. If you care about your privacy and a developer not abusing the rules, (as Facebook has done over and over) you might want to reconsider using those two apps.

Don't really believe all that marketing

All I use is WhatsApp

If somebody wants to hack me they will hack me doesn't matter what messaging service I use

I have all Google devices in my house and never had any issues with privacy

Don't live my life worrying about stuff like that

I have tried apps like Talkatone and Fongo, while it is doable in emergency, the call quality are subpar compare with actual phone calls. I would not want use these app as my daily communication needs.

I have talkatone right now on my iPad Pro 11” and the call quality is just as good or better than a regular cell phone service. It’s perfectly clear, no dropped calls I love it.

I’ve been using Talkatone since about 2012. And the only time I’ve seen poor call quality, is when the user has slow internet upload speeds and it provides bad call quality.

I’ve been using Talkatone for nearly 7 years.

I just signed up with Talkatone. Will give it a trial. For now, I won't port my number but, will use this for backup when needed. Maybe later on I will do something more permanent, if Talkatone works well.

I’m going to buy an iPad mini to use in combination with my iPhone but I’m debating whether I should get the cellular version. I currently have an iPhone 6S Plus and I’m on a plan that gives 10GB of hotspot use per month which is more than enough for me so I’m questioning whether I really need the cellular version. The only downside that comes to mind is that if I don’t spring for the cellular version, I’ll miss out on GPS for navigation.

Is there a reason why more people aren’t using their iPhones as a hotspot for their mini instead of buying the cellular version?

I am absolutely loving my iPad mini 5th generation cellular, so much that I’ve been using it more than my iPhone, I’ve been using it to send emails and texts via iMessage and if I need to phone anyone I’ve used FaceTime audio as most of the people I know own an iOS device.

I have found myself not needing to use my iPhones as much as I used to, but don’t get me wrong I still love my iPhone XR and Xs Max but I think the larger screen size is perfect and I love that I can just get my Apple Pencil out to write down some notes.

I’m actually in love with it, I know that it’s quite large to use as a phone but I think it’s the perfect size, it’s fits in my backpack and I can hold it with one hand as it’s so light. It really is the perfect device for me and I wished Apple would make a smartphone this size.

I’m curious does anyone else use their iPad mini as their iPhone and or do you wish Apple would make an iPhone in this size??

I live in a fairly large two-storey house, so on my home wi-fi I have my Mac and several iOS devices as well as my iPhone. Thanks to FaceTime, on this setup each of these devices (except of course the iPhone) functions exactly like an extension handset on a landline system: I can make and receive calls from any of them, saves me galloping all over the place to field a call. (N. b. one of the devices I use is my ancient iPod Touch, it works just as well as the rest).

In a setup like this there's no need in the world to spring for a cellular iPad. The iPhone does all the heavy lifting quite fine.

After this system had been running long enough for me to trust its reliability I cancelled my landline service. Over the course of a year this is going to save me a remarkable amount of money.

If you want to carry around your iPad mini like a phone, does that mean you always have to carry a bag or wear a coat with large pockets? If a coat, what about hot days?

Sorry, I thought this thread was about the feasibility of replacing one’s phone with an iPad, not just supplementing it. I misunderstood.
I replaced my phone with an ipad touch. Saving over $100 a month: it adds up!

Today marks the first day experiment of using my Mini 5 as my daily driver. Since I have T-Mobile as one of my lines, I was able to use T-Mobile digits with the mini 5. I don’t have to fool with Talkatone or Hushed.

I also bought a drop leg bag, so that I can easily carry my mini when I am out and about, thus freeing up my hands and pants pockets. Works well.

Day 1 was a success.

Do you have register it each time to use it? You still get notifications on your phone and iPad at same time?

I had that. For me it’s basically worthless - as you say I often have to re-register and notifications don’t work properly.
