I too like it without a case. But the camera bump bugs me more. So my idevices go in a thin light case that makes the back a level surface. Sad

Honestly, I have more iPad cases than I care to admit....Smart Covers, Keyboard Cases, tri-fold cases....ugh. Fortunately, I usually buy them deeply discounted and on sale, so it could be worse. Anyway, I just bought a Speck Folio Case for my iPad 2017. It was $15 at Wallmart. This one offers good protection and can be configured for various typing and viewing angles. This case doesn't have a built-in BT keyboard, so it is pretty light.

I have tried going without case protection, and it just makes me nervous. So, I buy cases for the peace of mind. Of course, I buy too damn many of them.....but, that's my fault...not the cases.

Any place but here or there....
I had a cheap, plastic case for the back of my 12.9 that was very lightweight. I could use the ASK with it and I liked it. Started using the 2018 iPad without the smart cover case I bought for it and that is fine. Unless I take this with me, I do not see using the case all that much.

ASK and a sleeve for when I’m putting it in a bag.

The only time I ever used a full on iPad case was with the original iPad 1. Which in hindsight was a monstrosity, dust magnet, sharp edges, eek!

For phones, I tend to use the all-round TPU gel covers that are a couple of quid from eBay. I would prefer not to, but I'm too clumsy...
My new-to-me ipad 3 just got a new faux-leather case for the same reason...

I have used iPads with and without smart covers/folios for many years, both ways. I go back and forth. It is really nice, I think, using and handling them without a case/cover. But you do need to be much more careful setting it down, etc. One thing that is not often mentioned is that without a case/cover, it is much more slippery and easily slides off a lap/chair/bed onto the floor. I have had a few heart-stopping moments. A smart cover/folio is not going to prevent damage if it falls on a hard floor, but it greatly reduces the risk of it falling in the first place.
An advantage of the smart cover/folio is it so easily detached, that you can go either way quickly.

Most of the time, mine is attached to my magic keyboard. When I want to use it in tablet mode, I just pull it off and use it without a case. Anytime I set it down or put it away, its protected in the magic keyboard.
