Hi Guys,

I wanted to know if what i am doing, doing this, could it be detrimental for the health of the iPad? So what I’m doing right now is I’m using VPN to get connected to Netflix of a different region (Country) and I try to download a movie while being connected to the VPN so there is a whole lot of download that goes on while I’m connected on the VPN. Normally it is around 400 to 500 MB. And takes about 20-25 mins. So the stress is on the iPad for about 20-25 minutes.

I wanted to know is getting connected to VPN for a longer period of time that too constantly and downloading movies, can that way, can it hamper the health of the iPad ? For e.g. the battery, the processor or the health in general of the iPad ? Can it cause a lot fo stress on the iPad Internal Hardware Resouces there by affceting the life and health of it ?

can somebody please tell me about this?

Thanks.

It's no more stressful to the iPad compared to downloading/streaming videos without VPN.

If you use the iPad, it's gonna have some battery wear. No avoiding that. Heck, even if you don't use it, the battery still ages.

So you are saying even if we're to use it normally without the VPN it would still have the same pros and cons as using with VPN ?

And i am saying just not from the battery standpoint but also processor, graphics, and whole lot of iPad internal hardware. Can it affect it ? Making it unusable pretty quickly than it would with normal usage ? Like making it age faster ! If you know what i mean ?

Same wear and tear. Really, unless the iPad's generating excessive heat, the components would be just fine.

Reckon the only thing apart from battery that suffers degradation is the NAND flash storage but I expect that has high enough P/E cycles to withstand normal use. Haven't seen any reports of iPads with dead NAND flash yet.

You said excess heat. Could that be something to watch out for? And getting connected through a VPN anyways generates more heat than usual isn't it ?

First I thought that you are trolling with this question but then realised you are serious.
Although I think the question itself is crazy but I'm not gonna be "that guy" and here is what I do:

I have VPN on all the time on my iPad Air 2 and it really is a non issue. So you will be ok

A VPN wouldn’t generate more heat unless it is taking more energy to work. All it’s doing is basically giving you a new IP address in the background. Whatever effect it has is negligible.

Right ! So the entire process of getting connected from my IP to a different country server IP isn't that itself a huge resource hungry and energy hungry process and step ? Just asking.

No it shouldn’t. I use a VPN on my iPhone and it’s fine. I don’t use 100% of the time but don’t notice a dip

No. You're still connecting to local wi-fi (or cellular as the case may be).

Going through the VPN is just like visiting a web site hosted in another country. The load is on the VPN service provider not on your device.

Electronic components are not subject to "wear and tear" in the traditional sense. The battery is the main component that is subject to wear as it is used over time. Silicone components will not wear out, and a VPN is essentially a networking program that is using the radios on your device. They won't wear out. The battery and screen will be worn out long before the electronic circuitry.

Well I think he’s asking would the VPN would make it use more energy. Similar to how certain programs will eat into battery life like games and etc

Above is what he asked. Processor and internal hardware resources are what I was referring to.

Its an honest question, since a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel to the server, one would assume that the constant encryption processes of all the GBs going in and out of the device will stress it out. I mean just look at how long it will take to encrypt an HDD.

How can you? A lot of the services will block you if you are using a VPN. I think Steam will terminate your account, Netflix will block you, Twitter will keep asking about fishy logins, Paypal will shutdown your account especially if you are connecting through another country.

I do and I have no issues.
Netflix - no issues
Twitter - no issues
Paypal - people still use this?
Steam - I only play Blizzard games = no steam needed

So yeah, VPN all the time and no issues.

A VPN doesn’t seem to be much work for an iOS device in my experience. I don’t expect the device to have a shorter lifespan because that technology was used.

There is no difference between watching movies via VPN and watching movies without VPN. It's very likely that the movies are encrypted at their source, so your iPad would have to work to decrypt them regardless of whether you use VPN or not. Connecting to the movie source via VPN takes no more work than connecting directly to the source.

The thing that takes the most work is downloading/watching movies - it generates continuous activity: Wi-Fi/cellular data connection, decryption, playback, display illumination.

If you're worried about wearing out the iPad, don't use it at all. iPad is a tool, and tools are only useful/valuable if you use them. If you just want to collect mint-condition objects, then put them in a sealed display case and never touch them. Using them means they'll wear out faster than if you don't use them. That's true for anything you have.

So are you saying Battery and Screen would get a hit even if the internal motheboard does not ?

I was asking everything including Screen, Display everything that goes in to make an iPad working !!

Correct me if I have not understood correctly are you saying streaming directly versus downloading for offline viewing is more stressful on the iPad !

I agree and i wanna keep using it as a utility device not some million dollar Diamond to be kept in a showcase. So I thought let me clear the block I have in my mind.

If you have a PIN/password setup on an iDevice, then its storage is automatically encrypted. It's par for the course at this point and is pretty negligible to do on modern chipsets with dedicated silicon for AES encryption.

As for HDD encryption, you're reading and writing to the entire disk simultaneous during initial encryption. HDDs aren't all that fast to begin with. The disk itself is the main bottleneck if one has a modern CPU.

So are you saying Battery and Screen would get a hit even if the internal motheboard does not ?

Batteries wear down as they age regardless of use. The more you use the iPad, the faster they wear out.

The use of VPN adds no/negligible load. Screen brightness and using wifi/cellular in a location with poor signal has greater impact on power consumption, heat and battery wear.

No, I'm not comparing downloading to streaming at all. Both involve the same amount of data, it's just a matter of how quickly they download, and whether buffering is required. Altogether, it's splitting hairs. There may be a difference in energy usage, but not enough to matter.

All I meant is that watching movies, of any kind, will use somewhat more energy than some other kinds of activities, due to the amount of data involved.

Relax, by the time you “wear out” your IPad you will no longer want it as it will be outdated. So use and ride it hard because it was designed and built not be be babies but used.

Lol, that wasn't the case with my LTE Pro 9.7. Wore out the battery on that within just a year that I had to plug it in middle of the day. Of course, it was often logging 15+ hours on-screen time daily. :p
