VC-1 and Handbrake (Apple TV preset)

So, Handbrake (latest SVN 2845) is crashing on a Blu-ray rip of the Wizard of Oz (beautiful remaster by the way).

The film is in VC-1. I've created a standard M2TS file with the VC-1 video and AC3 audio like all my other Blu-ray discs (which have been AVC). M2TS file was created using TSMUXER by selecting the 1080p VC-1 video track and down-converting the TrueHD audio to AC3. Blu-ray was ripped using Any DVD HD. Handbrake crashes roughly six seconds after encoding starts.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this just a limitation of Handbrake's VC-1 support?

Is there another way to transcode the VC-1 video and then import it back into Handbrake using another program (Mac or Windows)?

Reverting back to 0.9.3 worked.

By the way, it took me forever to find the picture settings in the new SVN build. What's up with that? They're hidden in the menu bar's "Window" settings.
 
thats strange, they should be in a toolbar icon as well. with an icon that looks like a test pattern on a monitor. Just to the left of the preview window icon.
 
Maybe I'm overlooking it? Or have a corrupted preference file?

This is the latest snapshot build. It doesn't matter if I run the 64- or 32-bit version.

hrm, okay that is strange .... the two icons for preview and settings should be to the left of the activity window icon.

Maybe try to customize you're toolbar ? Haven't heard of this before.
 
I don't see a way to customize the toolbar. I couldn't find any Handbrake preference files to delete.

Weird. It's just me right, it's not like it was accidentally left out of the snapshot build?

I'm running 10.5.7.

No, not saying its just you. many folks are running that snap though and I haven't seen it yet. So its hard for me to say.
if you right click on the toolbar it does not offer to let you customize the toolbar ?

I ran into the same problem with Blu-Ray conversion of "The Last House on the Left" with SVN2592. Encode starts and then about a minute into the encode, Handbrake pops up a dialog box stating "Handbrake has encountered an error and must close" (something to that effect). The Blu-Ray disk has a DTS-HD audio track (which I converted to "regular" DTS with TSmuxeR) -- Handbrake crashed with setting to convert DTS 5.1 to AAC Stereo. So then I converted the DTS to AC3 and tried converting with AC3 passthrough. Still crashed.

I am running Handbrake on a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad T400 running WinXP SP2.

Encode and scan logs are below.

Any ideas? Or is VC-1 just problematic?

Also note the last encode log entry before the crash is exactly the same for both of us (me and jaw04005):

"sync: first pts is 3754"

Coincidence?

Also should have been clearer that "Last House on the Left" Blu-Ray is VC-1.

Interesting.

I'm going to try encoding Wall-E Blu-Ray (MPEG-4 AVC) and see if it works.
If it works I guess I'll stay away from encoding VC-1 Blu-Ray :(

Wall-E Blu-Ray has the same audio track issue -- no AC3 track!!
Need to demux DTS-HD and convert it to AC3 for AppleTV.

Just annoying.

Wall-E works fine. I used MakeMKV instead of AnyDVD HD so as to get chapter markers with Handbrake.

What's weird is that I converted a few Blu-Ray discs to M4V with Handbrake and retained chapter breaks (using TSmuxeR)
but I can't figure out how I did this -- none of my recent Blu-Ray conversions include chapter marks - it's driving me crazy. :confused:

I'll check out MakeMKV but I've made this work in the past with HB; wanna try to figure it out since I really love Handbrake.

I use eac3to (windows only) instead of tsmuxer and then use mkvmerge to add the audio tracks and chapter file to my source mkv. Maybe ffpmeg has problems with VC-1 m2ts sources?

Interesting - I tried encoding an episode of Planet Earth Blu-Ray which is VC-1
with SVN2845 and saw the same crash behavior with the same last message
in the encode log "sync: first pts is 3754". Saw this using H.264 format (not MPEG-4 FFMPEG).

Note that I successfuly converted Gran Torino Blu-Ray (to H.264) which is also VC-1. So something must be funky across various VC-1 Blu-Ray discs.

I converted Wall-E Blu-Ray (MPEG-4 AVC) with no problem.

I'll try one of the Planet Earth episodes tomorrow. I have them on HD-DVD, not Bluray, but they are still VC-1.
 
I have the entire Planet Earth series and it's been transcoded to 1080p m4v at 18 mbps from the Blu-ray discs with Handbrake. You have to ensure you select 24 fps in Handbrake to get it to play back correctly, otherwise it's jumpy.

I was enable to encode an episode of Planet Earth but it played back
jerky when encoded at 23.976 fps or at 24 fps

It would be helpful if members would post if they are using the latest SVN and/or Apple TV present when listing whether or not a VC-1 title worked.

Keep in mind, this thread pertains specifcially to VC-1 sources not AVC (H.264) sources (like Wall-E).

I've had success with the Wizard of Oz using 0.9.3 on the Mac, but Christmas Vacation (horrible transfer by the way) crashes both 0.9.3 and 2845 on the Mac and 2845 on Windows. Same error message as above. I finally got it to encode using 0.9.3 on Windows.
 
The VC1 bug issue will not be resolved until after 0.9.4 is released.

Updating ffmpeg now would significantly delay a release.
 
Odd, I can encode VC-1 Blu-Ray with 0.9.3 for AppleTV but the end result ends up being 9Mbps which is not playable on AppleTV. This is using same setting I was using for SVN2592 (RF20) which produces playable files. Any idea why 0.9.3 is encoding at such high bitrate? Suggesed setting for ATV-playable results?

Just downloaded Handbrake 0.9.4. Still seeing the same crash problem when trying to encode VC-1 Blu-Ray HD for Apple TV. Going to stick with 0.9.3 for now.

Anyone having any luck using 0.9.4 with VC-1?
