Ventura external display problem

Left it connected like this last night, M1 Mac Mini -> USB-C Cable -> Belkin Thunderbolt Dock -> Display Port Cable -> LG Monitor

Same issue this morning. Tried connecting Mac directly to monitor with the USB-C cable. Monitor detected a new device connected but still nothing being displayed.

I don't see "WindowServer" in activity monitor. But I've now tried using "pgrep WindowServer" and can see there's a process running that I can try to kill tomorrow when I'm stuck again.

But that post also put me on the wrong track as they talk about "WindowsServer" with 2xS in the middle. I had tried "pgrep WindowsServer" which found nothing, then realised it has to be "pgrep WindowServer"

Yes I have tried that. And also tried logging out and logging back in.

The ONLY thing that gets the monitors working is when you restart the laptop. Nothing else works.

I cannot believe how a major function like this wasn't tested. Apple Silicon was bad enough with the multi-monitor and TB3 support but this is the pits 🙁
 
I am having the same issue. I've updated my M1 MBP 16" and when I connected it to the Caldigit TS4 dock the screens are flickering and going on and off. What I found useful is that every time, one of the screens I am unplugging it from the dock and plug directly into the MB, everything is working properly. Unfortunately, I don't know how to downgrade back to Monterey.
 
Same here, had no more external monitor (M1, LG 32UN88, USB-C) after the update. I read a few posts, nothing worked and started sweating.
But i got it to work by cold booting the monitor. Everything connected, OS booted. Then I just unplugged the power, the monitor played the welcome noise and i got the little screen to confirm permission in the OS.
Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be permanent, when i reboot it happens again, but more important is that sleep mode works fine.
I'm wondering ... after weeks and weeks of beta, nobody ever had this issue?

Unfortunately when I connect via the TB3 docks, I don't get any 'permissions' screen.

But yes, it is crazy that no one would have this issue after so many RC releases etc. It seems a permissions problem and hopefully it can be solved by a software update.

Sadly while many of us utilize the laptop in clamshell mode and are hurting right now, Apple seems to be pretty blasé about it ...
 
Mine works better since I bought the expensive TB3 cable from Apple, one to go yo the hub and one to the screen. Still keeps loosing / ****ing up the default resolution.

I had the resolution issue on Monterey too however.

Which cable is this? Can you link to the Apple Store ? There’s a TB4 cable for $159 and a TB3 cable for $39

I’ve tried with Choetech and CalDigit cables - same result

The TB3 for 39 USD got it slightly cheap on Amazon.

Not sure what the other brand were I had but with those I had to unplug the screen power and put it back in to get it to work under Ventura, pretty annoying.

and one that came with the TB hub.

Well I guess I was happy to early it started doing it again, so either I will wait for 13.1 or try a clean reinstall.

I have the same issue with DELL 2720Q, I have tried everything and still nothing works, and one other issue Im seeing is that oddly this seems to happen but less frequent using Bootcamp on the same computer.. odd isnt? Maybe si the Graphics card, cpu? not sure
 
M1 MBA with LG 32UN880, 4K. Monitor not found after Ventura update. After a few failed fixes, a simple power off/power on of my monitor fixed the problem. Whew!
 
13.0.1 was my latest update. After monitor power cycle, mostly good. When I have my laptop open at the same time, the color on the LG is a bit warmer. When I close the laptop, and have just the LG working, I see a color shift to a cooler white. Odd.

I have been using the above device without issues prior to macOS Ventura. After I upgraded, nothing can be displayed anymore on my external display via HDMI. I tried plug/unplug and whatever stuff I can disable on the config following instructions I read online and not a single solution worked.

I then tried to use the oldie Multiport Adapter built by apple of course and my External Display now worked.

Looks like apple just want us to use only apple products. I hope this will also work for others who are suffering the same predicament without switching back to Monterey.

What a friggin' pain. I haven't upgraded beyond 12.4 because I had this going on.
The way I've been able to work around this, is to wait 'till my Mac Studio is all Booted... then if the Monitor isn't working, I unplug the USB-C and the AC from the Monitor. When I plug both back in they've worked so far.
Amazing to me that this has been going for at least a couple years and Apple still won't fix it.

Connect the Mac to the external display, then close the "WindowsServer" process in Activity Monitor. But close the process with the Mac connected to the display. Starting the process again, after a few seconds everything works fine. You have to do this on every reboot.

No need to boot into safe mode

system settings > desktop and dock > rearrange spaces automatically -> off
system settings > desktop and dock > screens with separated spaces -> off

this seems to be the solution until apple fixes it with some macOS Ventura update.
 
For MacOS Ventura wake-from-sleep and displays connected via a TB3 dock - I can confirm the following do NOT work

- Updating to MacOS 13.0.1: same behavior as before
- Changing System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Security -> 'Allow Accessories to connect' to 'Always'
- Killing WindowServer processes
- Logging out and logging back in
- Logging in under a different user account
- Different TB3 cables
- Using different TB3 docks
- Disconnecting and reconnecting the TB3 cables

So far the ONLY thing that works is a reboot. This has made my MBP unusable since I work with external displays and keyboard/mouse, I absolutely need the dock.

I've submitted a report via Feedback Assistant and emailed Craig Federighi asking if Apple will acknowledge the issue and fix it - but I think Apple for whatever reason is just not prioritizing this issue. *Sigh*

I have the same issue with my 2017 MacBook and LG 40" WUHD. Interestingly, my iMac 27" 2020 doesn't have any issue with 27" LG 5K monitor. A patch is desperately needed.

Tried your method and … no luck. Tried disconnecting the monitors and powering them off. Reconnecting to either the dock or the MacBook does nothing - the displays remain blank

Aw crap.
Try this. Power Down Completely. Wait a minute or so. Then Boot (Not Reboot) and wait. If the Moniter doesn't Come On, then unplug the Moniter's AC from the Monitor... and see if that works. If not, unplug the USB from the Monitor too. Good luck<

If you power off and boot or reboot it will work - till the MacBook goes into deep sleep again.

My MacStudio, running 12.6, never had problem with external monitor, direct HDMI to HDMI, via HDMI to DP adapter, or a TB3 to HDMI 2.1 adapter (from Sabrent). So, maybe the problem is your monitor or your hub/cable or anything between.
And I will never trust USB3.x for connecting a high resolution monitor.
