Palm pre

I am using is as I typemon my iPad from the beach in Maui!

Works great for surfing, streaming netflix is a bit slow in the islands but works well back at home in so cal.

Def worth it, and my wife likes the phone too! Nice camera and cool charger

How is the call quality on the pre and pixie? Can they stand alone as a decent ozone or are you having to compromise just to get the hotspot?

I use a blackberry 8530 curve and the call quality has been great. Email on the phone is important so push email is a must.

Both the Pre and the Pixi are nice little phones. The Pre got a bad rep from some early runs. Too bad.

My son-in-law loves his Pre, his wife loves her Pixi. I prefer the Pixi for carrying because it's so slim. For either one, the Touchstone charger is luxurious... it's the way all phones should charge.

We've used the Pixi as a hotspot for our kids with iPhones. Where we live, just going inside a restaurant makes ATT 3G disappear. So we turn on the free Pixi tethering, for them to use.

If I were to get one just for tethering, I'd research which model had the biggest optional battery. For example, you can get an extended 2600mAH for the Pre, which is TWICE the capacity of the original and requires its own special case back. Or heck, just carry a spare. That's what swappable batteries are good for.

So, when you go to restaurants, that's when your kids start using the Internet on their phones? Sounds like a real meaningful family dinner.

WTF? I didn't know this was the critical family judgement forum. Keep your negative OFF TOPIC comments to yourself. If you cannot add anything meaningful to the discussion please unplug your modem and go harass your cell mate.

This is a forum for iPad users. This thread is about using the palm pre as a hot spot thru Verizon. What don't you understand? You need a crash course on forum/Internet ettitquette?

Who said dinner?

My kids are thirty-ish. One's a master oceanographer. One's a national exec. One is an audio/video tech for Sirius XM and has to be reachable at all times.

So yep, when we have lunch together and the two with iPhones can't get an email or look up something online in an emergency, the Pixi's hotspot is very handy to have.

did some checking at the pre central forums and the users there report that a 5 gb cap is inplace on tethering thru the palm pre thru Verizon.
Drag.

But it is cheaper thanthe $60 a month MiFi deal.

also reports are the download speeds on ipad and ipot touch are agonizingly slow.

can you recent iPad/Palm Pre users verify which area you live in and your typical download speeds are?

Thanks!

Went to a local Verizon store today and found out th free hotspot deal on the Palm Pre is officially over.

It is now an additional $40 per month in addition to the $30 data plan.

Drag. Big drag. The phone is cool but I ain't gonna upgrade if no freebie hotspot.

The deal is still available if you order online...at least as of this moment.

Used the ipad with a Verizon Pre Plus and Pixi Plus in Houston, Texas. Before about three days ago I never got above 150 Kbps. Same deal when using the hotspot with an iPod touch. For the last few days I've gotten 250-2100 Kbps. I don't know if something got changed or if its a permanent increase but its been pretty awesome.
