I've been with verizon for over 6 years, I have 4 months contract left and they will do nothing to help me with the $175 Early Termination Fee. Will Verizon sent me a last bill + $175 if I just switch my number over to AT&T? And can you pay the bill over time like they will allow to do if you go over your minutes? Has any one been through this process, being under contract with verizon still, and trying to switch to AT&T? Any workarounds?

Thoughts?

As shady as this will sound, you can call Verizon every single day and complain about the service (even if its good.) Just complain of dropping calls many times a day, and after a week or so, threaten to get a lawyer involved if they don't let you out of the contract. Most companies don't want a hassle like this, and may let you out.

I actually DID have horrible service like this with Sprint, and they did in fact let me out with no fee. This was years ago, and then I switched to Verizon. I was loyal to them for 8 years, and my contract expired on June 12th. Perfect timing to switch to AT&T for the iPhone. Verizon did nothing to try to talk me out of leaving them either. I think if you apply pressure, they might let you out.

It's not the most honest thing to do, but at least it's not stealing and no one gets hurt in the process.

Good luck with any route you take, and let us know how it goes! I love to hear what works, if anything!

Yeah, good idea... you know... I never get reception in my own house. Only one room can hold a call without dropping. Sounds funny I know, but I never even thought of it because we still have a land line. But this sounds like a good reason to get "upset."

Thanks. For real.

iPhone here I come!

get Verizon to give you a new number

After you port your number to ATT just call Verizon and tell them you need a new number because you ported the old one... done...

I had Verizon for a year and was VERY happy with their service.

I paid the $150 termination fee and left.

I wanted an upgrade at my phone and did that with a service (At&t) that is terrible down here in Nawlins

:D

Cingular is no where as bad as people are saying. I've been with cingular for over 2.5 years and I rarely have ever had a droped call. Yes... their costumer service stinks but the call quality is not bad.

note - I live outside of NYC so quality may be better than where you are

I'm in the exact same boat...except I have a total of 3 phones in a Verizon familyplan...and have 5 months left :(

The only problem I can see that you may encounter is if VZW asks you why after nearly 6 years with being with them this is an issue... especially when there is about 4 months left in the contract...

I just switched to AT&T from Verizon today and I already had 2 dropped calls and noticed one dead zone near my house...oh well, the sacrifices you gotta make to use an iPhone...

if you can't afford to terminate your contract with verizon, i don't think buying an iphone now is such a good idea. wait until your contract is over. the plus side is that the iphone software might be less buggy, and new apps might be released in that time.

Actually I have 5 lines 4 under contract.

I'm eating the cost. Thats all there is to it.

BTW prorating began feb '07 so... because we signed our contact before feb '07 oops no deal, $175 a line. I hate it, but after the math I'm still saving money by releasing the choke-hold verizon has on me! No kidding!

If an iPhone grew arms and legs wanted to fornicate me with a spiked pole, I'd say:

take it nice and slow.

Yeah... I don't think verizon has a heart anyway.

Agreed. If the price of termination is TOO MUCH for you, waiting is never a bad option especially since software updates are soon to come.

simple as this. if you want a cool phone go with att. if you want great coverage get vzw. i was with vzw for 5 years and now i'm with att and the coverage is terrible compared to vzw.

Prorating started in 2007

That's what Verizon told me this weekend. Had 2 lines on Family plan, no early termination on either since held contract for 2 years, but to drop one line they wanted me to sign a one year contract (39/450min single line plan). So what did I do with this a**hole carrier ?

Signed a 2 year contract, bought a LGVX8700 that's selling for 300 on eBay for 100. Now I have 200 for early termination if I choose to. How can this help you ?

As a 6 year customer, Verizon will often allow you to renew early, if you call a manager. Renew, but a phone, sell it, use the sale for the termination fee, and move on.

The other option (always consult with your broker first) is consider buying 100 shares of Apple stock on any dip. I bought 100 shares at a little over 129, and more on todays dip to 136 since it's already hit 139.5 twice. It's sort of in an uptrend, and earnings are reported next Wednesday. Anything could happen, but lots of positive outlook to say the least :)

Where do you people constantly complaining about AT&T live?
I just find it really hard to believe the "I just switched to AT&T today and have gotten two dropped calls" posts when I've been with them for 5 years and can't recall ever having a call dropped while frequently traveling between Dallas and Oklahoma City.

Wait out your contract

My contract with Verizon expires in 5 months on 12/29. I want to keep the number that I've had for the last 12 years so I'm waiting to see if Apple releases a 3G phone for Europe and maybe here in the States. Otherwise I would have purchased an iPhone the weekend of the release.

So I suggest waiting out your contract, don't pay the early termination fee and see what Apple has in store for us at MacWorld next year.

The waiting will make you a better man/women, ;)

Edit

Oh, heck just buy it. You know you want it. What's $175?

I would happily pay $175 to not have to call Verizon's (or any cell phone company's) customer service line ever again.

I also made the jump from Verizon to AT&T...called, begged, then just cancelled.
It really wasn't that painful to pay the $$$ and never worry about dealing with vz again!

PS
I also get BETTER coverage with my new service...

I switched over to AT&T a few years (pre-Cingular days) ago because my VZW phone wouldn't work in my house. Since then I've had no issues with AT&T's coverage at all, my phone has worked everywhere I've used it.

Coverage is just one of those things. Some places AT&T sucks, others Verizon sucks. If you happen to living in one of those areas (I lived in a "Verizon sucks" area) then you probably are going to get a false impression as to how bad their network coverage is.

blargh!

I don't know what all you people are talking about. I've had Cingular (now AT&T) for two years and have had excellent coverage and great customer service. They even one time removed all of my extra fees for going over my minutes one time for paying on time consistently. They even post-dated an international call for me that I made not knowing my international rates and reimbursed me the difference when switching plans. The people were helpfull and everythign has gone smoothly everytime i've talked to them.

I live in Delaware and have never had bad coverage. I don't have an iPhone yet and I have seen edge is a bit on the slow side, but it's the best thing they could have chose for the time.

I hate this whole network thing... you can't say what network your on without getting some sort of connotation about the kind of person you are these days.
"OMG YOU'RE ON VERIZON... WHAT CRAPPY PHONES"
"AT&T I get no bars anywhere
"T-Mobile, what are you.. a moron...?"

I hate to see what happens if you you say you have boost mobile or some crazy service like that. It's apples & oranges people they all have their problems, if there was a perfect one there wouldn't be any competition.

Regardless to each his own...

I was on Verizon in a family plan with my wife. Her's was the main line, mine was added for like $10/month.

I've purchased an iPhone and moved to AT&T. Will I get a $175 ETF from Verizon for the one phone number that I ported?

I went to the apple store yesterday to look at iPhones and the sales guy told me if i had verizon i could get out of my contract within the next month cus they upped some fee without telling anyone. anyone here of this? oh well i only have a month left anyway...

The VZW website still says $175, so that would be pretty sneaky (and most likely illegal) if they upped it without notice.
