Secondly, you need to install XP SP2... not SP1... I had an older version of XP and bootcamp won't install it. Well it tries and then gives you an error.

F!....i have a windows xp pro install cd with built in SP1 but not SP2...can i install win xp sp1 and then update to sp2?....

Your Microsoft Windows installation disc must include Service Pack 2 (SP2). You cannot install an earlier version of Windows and upgrade it to Microsoft Windows XP, nor install an earlier version of Microsoft Windows XP and update it with SP2 later.

You can't. Sorry.:(

I use MS XP Home Edition because thats what I had. Dont know whats so different to Pro but it works just fine

hey, i will be playing bf2 and cs: source mostly...will i need vista?
whats the install space required for vista?and what about xp-pro sp2?

XP, hands down. I'd recommend waiting another couple years before you start using Vista for games. There isn't a huge list of games that will work on Vista right now.

Gotta agree with this. I tried Vista a couple of months ago, and while I really wanted to like it, it still isn't ready. In my own experience I had much better frame rates under XP. Vista had some issues with certain games too. It'll get there someday, but for now XP is it.

If I were going to goto Vista though, it MUST be the 64 bit version. 32 bit needs to die off.

is it true that the 32 bit versions of vista home premium can only adress 2 gig of ram? do you need the 64 bit version to take advantage of 4 gig ram?

Pretty much, though they may do a little better and get somewhere between 2 and 4 GB.

Does bootcamp work with 64-bit Vista? I thought I read in one of the pop-ups during the bootcamp install process that I needed to use 32-bit windows and that 64-bit wouldn't work. Yet people here seem to be recommending 64 bit. Is it time to up my meds or did I actually see that?

(I'm using a MBP 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo, if that makes any difference).

Yes Vista 64 works, only for the new Mac Pros as the current Leopard Disks include all the drivers for it. I installed it but still couldn't get the bootcamp control panel to boot back into Mac OS X. XP 64 bit is more stable and games work better in my opinion. Halo for example runs insanely well on XP 64, and recognizes the audio card to allow for surround, the textures looks amazing. Vista I got mad polygon dysfunction and audio card wasn't recognized (in game). Vista runs fast it would be useful for non-gaming, not recommended for gaming though.

So, is Vista 32bit home premium a good choice for a MBP since it only has one processor?

I know you can get a bit more performance out of XP, but I feel obliged to move to a newer OS rather than investing in a system that is already several years old and I don't know how long it'll be around for..

Whats the diff between home premium and home basic, besides the 30$ price?
