Very slow iPad 3

Is it just me, or are other iPad 3 owners also experiencing very slow performance? It takes ages to load web pages. Doing a reset to refresh and reinitilaize the iPad didn’t help. Also turning off all unnecessary features and functions such as location services had little effect.

I know this model is getting to be long in the tooth, but I didn’t expect it to become useless so fast. I’m sure later IOS updates and releases bogs things down.

Dude it came out early 2012. The device is now is 5 1/2 years old. It's technically simply outdated.

Not only is it over five years old, but this model was always kinda underpowered to begin with. Apple discontinued it seven months after it was released.

I have one with a shattered screen and am debating whether I want to replace it myself for ~$35. Maybe I’ll turn it into a digital picture frame.

I still use my iPad 3 with great confidence and joy! I use it mainly to surf the web, mail, photos, view scanned 8mm family film-archive to video's from my Plex Server etc. Although it's an old fart, it still serves me well!

EDIT: I'm on the latest iOS 9.3.5 because 10+ is just not possible and thus a no-go. No need for worries about all those new features!

By taking very good care - in every way possible - of my iPad 3 over the past years, it is still a Mean & Clean Machine!

Using mine to type now. But when I realised I cannot install the new NFL Gamepass app, it's craaaaazy slow to type and boot, I realised I want a new iPad

I am not getting a Pro as I just replaced my MacBook Pro this year and 256GB for £899 is not worth it in my eyes

So will look at the normal iPad for £599 or refurb. Good choice?

I recently bought the regular iPad 2017 - 256 GB. A perfect new machine running iOS 10 like a Swiss Clockwork. Great choice if you DON'T NEED the size and power of the Pro!

I just checked my current iPad 3 size and its 64GB, so I think I am going to try and get away with a 32GB! I didn't know the current iPad was release this year so it will be nice and fresh

I will wait for some Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals and see what is around

I'm using an old iPad 2 for a bit, and will probably keep it until it dies or give it to my mother eventually. It still allows me to watch YouTube videos and other very light tasks on iOS 9, which is nice. iPad 2 and the third gen iPad that you have are pretty similar in performance, so I would recommend that you simply not use Safari at all. Download the Puffin browser app. It's not ideal, but it is much faster and more stable than Safari on these devices.

Yes, the normal iPad is fantastic. It should last you a good 3-5 years.

I have the 64GB also! If you're open to some advise; DO buy the largest GB possible.

I can't see how deep your pockets are, but imho I myself made the worst mistake ever buying the iPhone 6 Plus with only just 16 GB coming from a 32GB iPhone 5. A purchase I still regret YTD!

Never enough STORAGE, specially with those MB hungry thingies like photo's, video's and app data like WhatsApp alike

You must hate her. The iPad 2, while still usable... just barely. Typing urls ( touch screen slow response ) for web surfing will be annoying at best.

Yes, I believe the Air came out the following year. A huge difference in performance compared to the previous iPad 3. Apple probably should have just skipped this slow under-powered version.

I got many good years from my iPad 3 but upgraded to the 2017 iPad when it came out and thus thing is fantastic.

Haha, no. You don't understand my mother. She just wants to text my sister on iMessage and maybe watch YouTube videos. She is so slow and clueless with tech that the iPad 2 would probably be too fast for her.

The 4 came out 7 months later that was a 2x increase in CPU in performance, then the Air a year after that with another decent increase. The only thing the 3 had for it was the first retina screen on the iPad. It did have faster graphics than the 2, but with many more pixels it always felt slower to me than my 2. It was heavier and thicker too.

I honestly believe the 3 was a cause in the slowdown of Apple iPad Sales, it soured many people on the iPad because of how quick the 4 came out after and because it was a dud performance wise.

So be thankful you got 5 years out of it and save up for a 2017 iPad or iPad Pro!

My wife still happily uses my old 3 but its only a media viewer for her. I upgraded when the first 12.9 came out and i thought then i got a nice long life from the 3.

Quite frankly, unless you're really picky about performance, the Air 1 was quite serviceable even on iOS 10.3.3. Dunno about iOS 11.

I have both the 3 and Air 1, and it’s night and day difference. The Air 1 is quite zippy on 11.0.2.

Since my 3 came with IOS 5 back in 2012 and was a good performer for my needs then, I wish I had never upgraded to later IOS releases. I think later IOS versions killed this iPad, in addition to being somewhat slow from the get go.

Since then I went from a 3 to a used Air 2, which I liked, but it was a stop gap because I expected an Air 3 (at the time) to come out soon. Well we didn’t really get much of an update on the Air line that year, so I went for the iPad Pro 9.7. Since then, I haven’t looked back. The speed, stereo speakers, pencil support, and a few other perks have been amazing for my use.

I honestly leave my MacBook Pro at home a lot more than I ever did. Especially since I again upgraded to the pro 10.5.

Correct, but my argument (although anecdotal) is that many people who bought the iPad 3 didn't buy another one after their experience (which typically happens 2 to 4 years later). The iPad 3 was their first and last iPad.

iPhone 4 was fine with the resolution. What it couldn't handle was the unexpected jump in system requirements (particularly graphics) that was iOS 7. Really, all the A5-based devices or older probably shouldn't have received iOS 7+.

In my experience majority aren't even aware that there was an iPad 4. The thing is most people just don't spend $500 every year to upgrade their iPads. Even when it's dog slow, they'll keep using it until it physically breaks. I reckon there are probably a lot of iPad 3 owners who didn't upgrade until this year when the $329 iPad was released.

Quite frankly, older iPhones and iPads were pretty slow when it comes to webpage rendering (using a Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge as control). It just wasn't as apparent when both your mobile devices were slow. However, when you're using an iPhone 6s and an iPad 3, the disparity is extremely obvious.

Everything that you type passes through a proxy that emulates a browser (oversimplification of actual process) . The company CloudMosa has access to everything you do. They could scrap everything that pops up in a webpage based on keywords: password & username for example and save it separate from the logs into a database. I have not heard of this happening by this company, but no one heard of the 1billion+ leaked accounts from Yahoo! for years.

To answer your question by definition of the word dangerous: Yes, it is dangerous. The question is do you trust a third party with your information? To some degree, we must to exist in the current digital world.

The good news is that you can change your password every 6 months and any compiled databases that are sold to the darknet will not be valid ( it typically takes 3 - 6 months to get the information into the hands of people that will then attempt to use it ).
