They could bring the iOS widget framework to Mac OS if it make any sense. I'm not sure where it should go. The desktop is always hidden and I don't want to have to hide everything else to see widgets. I could see a tray kind of interface where the widgets slide into view on demand.
I have one of my hot corners set to 'desktop', it's a very simple gesture.

Dashboard was introduced on 10.4 Tiger, like 18 years ago. That was extremely useful because all the most useful items like calculator and weather were ready to pull up and could be stowed away with the press of a function key. Now it's something you have to pay for, and I'm not even sure if you can stow these or if they're permanently on the desktop.

I'm sure. I've just never had a reason to look at my desktop. I don't keep anything there. It's just a background. There are always things in front so I would find it hard to develop the habit of looking at my desktop.

I remember when widgets had a dedicated function key on Apple's keyboards. Then they killed them off for no reason, and the Weather widget quit working, even on older MacOS versions which still had widgets. Now they are killing off the Lightning connector for no reason. Sad!
they're not killing lightning for NO reason...

a) the lightning connector is over 10 years old already. there are better (read non-proprietary) connectors out there that can do what lightning does better (read faster and at higher wattage)

b) one in particular is usb-c. and since the EU has mandated that all devices need to have a common connector to cut down on e-waste (among other reasons) and have specified usb-c, apple has to either fall in line or stop selling their products in the EU.

It's not going anywhere soon.

Apple magic mice now use lightning for charging... a stupid move by them.
Apple Pencil requires this for understandable reasons, but should move towards USB C as newer iPads transition to it.
Apple Air Pods also equipped for lightning connector.

That one: Stop selling products to those EU tyrants! Or, invest in some malicious compliance, and include a dozen Lightning female to USB-C male connectors with each iPhone 15.

Now, tell us how easy and fast it is for all of us using a mouse ...

I'm for one am one of them who've been missing Dashboard dearly. Current side panel widgets aren't even coming close to being an adequate substitute.
With a mouse you can simply click on the date (top right)

I was intrigued until I saw the subscription. I get the subscription model really benefits developers, but it's almost like paying taxes with every developer perpetually having their hands in our pockets. It makes sense for big apps where you use them to make a living, but I can't justify every tiny app wanting a piece of the pie.

That aside, I do miss the MacOS Dashboard. I used it frequently. You could do a dev trick via terminal and place the widgets on the desktop as well.

Bring back Dashboard! What is old is new again!

Many will disagree, but I feel dashboard was prematurely removed. MacOS required you to turn it on first to use it and I think perhaps a lot people really didn't try it or knew what it was about.

I would rather pay once for an app than all these subscriptions. I think they count on folks forgetting to cancel.
Yes, kinda like the gym member phenomenon, hoping the people will never get around to using it but keep forgetting to cancel.

I’m the developer of a similar Widget app called Superlayer so I’ve read your comments with great interest! 😊

In general, as an indie dev it doesn't matter what kind of app you release — the price is always hotly debated in the community. And that’s okay! Be assured that most devs never take pricing lightly. It’s just really difficult to make everyone happy.

A lot of users do not argue at all but just make a purchase silently. So if you’re an indie dev yourself reading this: Don’t get irritated! Subscriptions are almost the only way for bootstrapped indie products to ensure users an actively developed, sustainable product. At the same time there’s a lot of people who just don’t like subscriptions, and that’s okay too.

Regarding the Widget apps in specific, keep in mind that each Widget is basically an app at its own. It is heavily time-consuming and complicated to implement such an app. It took me almost one year to Version 1.0 of Superlayer. I worked on it full time and spent most of my savings to do so. It was the biggest risk I ever took in my indie dev journey. Unfortunately it didn’t worked out well — even at a super low 1,99€ per month subscription and a one-time-purchase option.

Pretty cool, but I don't think I can get around the $9.99 yearly subscription.
Agree! I hate subscriptions. I can pay for a "service", I can pay for upgrades of an app but just paying for an app resting in my device force me to avoid it unless it is vital for my business. I believe in property, I will do anything to go against the recent motto "You will own nothing and you will be happy". Property is freedom. When you own nothing you are a slave. I can give up part of my freedom paying a subscriptions if doing it will improve my business in order to gain more freedom.
