jailbreaking is easy

It's available on jailbreaked iphones. I don't see any reason not to jailbreak the iphone, since you can have both app store apps and jailbreaked apps working side by side.

And things like video recording, video conferencing or custom themes I think will never be available in the app store because Apple just doesn't want it.

I don't see any reason not to jailbreak the iphone.

Because Apple specifically prohibits it and it voids warranty. Also, while jailbreaking opens your phone up to a whole host of great apps and tricks it also has some people bricking their phones.

With that said, I do admire the community and what they are accomplishing.

A reversible software hack does not void your warranty. Sure some enthusiastic guy at the genius bar might refuse to work on the phone if he sees that it's jailbroken, but just do a restore before taking it in and they'll never know the difference because it's not like you're breaking a seal on the case or whatever.

"...Apple's officially policy is that jailbreaking an iPhone voids the product's warranty, and users run the risk that any software update from Apple may turn their expensive device into little more than a paperweight..."

You can't brick the phone through Jailbreaking. I have helped a few friends Jailbreak theirs, and while the Cydia/Installer apps and custom themes are cool, the intermittent problems that come with them (spontaneous crashing, lockups, constant need to restart, reports of larger battery drain etc. that are inherently more than what happens on the iPhone now) aren't worth it. Sure, not every person who jailbreaks their phone will experience these hassles, but my friends have, and a couple even decided to go back to stock Firmware. When 2.1 comes out which hopefully adds more features to the iPhone 3G and a STABLE, tested jailbreak comes out to pwn it, then we'll talk. But having to keep re-pwning every time a firmware update hits is extremely annoying, so i'll stay happy with my never-jailbroken, 2.0.2 3G ;)

Also...copied directly from Apple's website:

"Making unauthorized modifications to the software on an iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under warranty."

Can someone confirm as the whether this is true or not. If it is then this is somewhat troublesome.

If apple wanted video recording on the iphone, they would've done it when the iphone first came out, or at least when the iphone 3g came out. Also, for video conferencing, they would've put another camera in the front. So those features will most likely never show up on the iphone. And i don't think the sdk allows it. So..the only thing left is jailbroken apps. Same goes for themes...they just don't want you to mess with your phones. With apple...everything needs to be controlled...how you get your music, videos, apps, the resolution of the photos on the iphone (you still cannot have a full res photo transfered through itunes)
They just want to create an extremely controlled environment to maximize profit for them and their buddy in crime...ATT.

my problem with jailbreaking is that it HAS destroyed peoples phones. Sure it's a very small percentile, but it's a possibility and I don't feel like my phone bricking in the event that im one of the unlucky few.

Why does Apple not want Video recording?

Nowhere does it say that Apple doesn't want video recording on the iPhone, i don't know where that person got their info from. The belief is that Apple is dis-allowing third party developers from pushing out services like turn-by-turn navigation and video recording because they want to be the first to implement it. But as far as Apple NEVER wanting these apps, that is entirely false.

As far as themes go, this is something that will never be officially supported as it goes against the SDK. Themes and custom icons actually modify the iPhone software itself, which is not allowed. Plus, like any OS running a custom background, having these uses up a little bit more resources than normal, even if jailbroken iPhone users can't tell the difference.

Do you really think it take a giant software company like Apple, more than 2 years to develop something that has been available on even the cheapest damn phones for the past 4-5 years? They just don't see the need for it, just like they don't see the need for 'copy and paste'.

This still does not re-affirm your statement saying that these functionalities are lacking on the iPhone because "Apple just does not want it" or "don't see the need for it."

I am just saying, before you step up and declare that features are missing because the company does not want them, you should at least have the evidence to back that up. Just because these features aren't there now doesn't necessarily mean they won't be. But i digress...

Yeah, copy and paste! Which, uhm, they've admitted they're working on for a future update.

So where does that put your "if they haven't done it by now they don't want it" theory?

I think it's more of a case of "doing it right the first time" as opposed to "releasing whatever they got".

lol That may be the case. Since we all know what happened with MobileMe.

But in any case, video recording is a much more of a standard on phones nowdays than copy-paste, and not including it the first time, or the second time, is just makes it obvious that it won't happen. That's all i'm saying. And me and i'm sure alot of other people will turn to jailbreaking even more if apple continues on this path of denying people what they want (especially since all those features are available on most lesser phone)

Yeah, and I think that's a pretty fair balance. The mainstream get a phone with a certain featureset, and the "hardcores" get to play around and have fun with all this good hardware. Win-win, no?

I think the problem with creating content on the fly (aside from pics, which don't need to "live" in iTunes), is that the "base" (aka iTunes) and all the "sattilites" (aka all your ipods, and iphones, and etc.) can get all out of sync. When you think about it ... no other iPod has 'generated' content on-the-go before.

I'm sure there are logistics involved that we're not considering.

I think it has to do with what the iPhone represents... if it's just another phone platform with a few cool apps, and 100 different versions of flashlight apps, and solitare, then it's all good. But if they want to be a powerful mobile platform for people to create the most amazing apps, then it has to be open enough, and it has to support the most basic features that make mobile phones or smartphones great. Unfortunately alot of those are missing from the iphone, such as video recording, a proper gps, copy-paste, file managment, a working push mail, etc. So as long as apple is more open with their SDK, or are willing to develop these themselves, there will always be cool new apps, or hacks or whatever, only possible through jailbreaking.
