I just have one final question (this one should be free from the legal implications that everyone seems so keen on discussing): If I can the downloaded file with ClamXAV or Norton 11, I should be fine right? I know if the comments on a particular torrent are fine and if I scan it with Nod32, it should be fine for Windows. I was just wondering if it is the same for Mac.

Again, it's just a simple question of what's the probability of a Trojan falling through the cracks.

No virus scanner is 100% accurate, but in general, you should be safe after scanning it with your virus scanner of choice. I use ClamXav on all the my Macs, and I've been very happy with it.

And guys, there are legit ways to use bit-torrent. ;)

I didn't think there were ANY viruses for OSX - as far as I can make out there are only a couple of trojans and malware.

Right, but if he's downloading software through torrents, that's a prime opportunity to get something like a trojan. Plus, he may be concerned with being a host for Windows viruses.

ClamXav has definitions for threats to both Macs and Windows.
