Yes. 1st party solution is a completely different thing. If I was a Windows user I would gladly use MS protection.

But antivirus and security vendors are one of most awful companies to deal with. I would advise against installing anything like that on your Mac.

Mac is designed on a different principles. By default it doesn't run unsigned binaries (and soon they will have to be notarised). There are concepts like system integrity protection, sandboxing. These things are not bullet proof, but if you keep your system updated, think about where you install your software from and don't do crazy things you are reasonably well secured without paying the unacceptable costs of security software (and by cost I mean not only money, but also privacy, performance, battery life, reliability and other aspects).

In order for AV software to work you have to first cross the lines and and grant permissions no 3rd party software should have in my opinion. Arguably this is a big risk to take with very little value.

If you keep downloading all these mac cleaners from porn site pop-ups or cracked software from torrent, you'll sooner or later install a malware. Antivirus or not.
