Vista as the only OS on a C2D Imac

Is it possible to have Vista as the only OS on a C2D Imac?

If it is, I have 2 questions:

1.How do I install it? Would it work this way – Start up with the Mac OSX CD, run disk utility and format drive as MS DOS (or something like that). Then put Vista CD in it, restart and boot from cd and install vista.

2.What about firmware and SMC updates? If apple releases firmware updates I won’t be able to install them. My question is, are firmware or SMC updates any good for me if I would only use vista? Would it be as useless as a Mac OSX 10.4 update (Because I won’t use it) or is it different?

If it is different and important to update the firmware would you recommend to have a small OSX partition only with OSX installed to install firmware updates?


The reason I want to do this is I just love Vista – never installed it before and if I won’t do it soon I will get insane. I am waiting and looking all day for a leaked RTM version to check Vista out. Hopefully it will be out today or on Monday as they say. And if I will like Vista still until January I will buy the retail version.

You'll need OS X for the firmware updates. Can't spare about 5 GB for that?

Have you tried getting into the public Beta test? I've had Vista since July. Comparing it to Windows XP, I don't see a need to upgrade.

Just the first sentence

When you run the Windows Vista installer the OS X partition will show up as an unknown partition. Just delete it and all the other ones. Then format the entire drive to NTFS for Windows. Install Vista and done.

XP looks like ****? I couldn't tell you. I've always used the Windows Classic theme. I'll agree it looks slick in Vista.

Seriously, try Windows Vista out first. I'm comparing it to Windows XP and I don't think it's worth it.

Now this is before we even bring in OS X 10.4.

I definately have to try vista out, because right now i don't like OSX 10.4 to much (because of Vista - thats just the way I am). When I got the C2D Imac I loved Mac OSX and never thought I would use Windows again. I was like a Mac Fanboy talking all day about how good Mac OSX is

I guess when Leopard comes out i will switch again

I get all excited when I see a Vista picture. At first I wanted to download from a torrent vista when it comes out. But after I saw the beautifull packaging of Vista I am going to buy it for sure and because if microsoft knows I got a pirated version they will disable AERO.

I don't know how long I will like Vista but right now i am thinking about Vista 24/7 and waiting for a rtm leak an downloaded a lot of fakes already. But I wont stop until I get it

The major windows problem to me is it makes your computer run more slow after a while. I could feel it in Xp. But I read Vista has something to dont slow down your computer

Yuck, will PC people ever learn Windows is terrible and worthless. Why not go back to DOS if you want ugly? But to each his own I guess. Good luck with your pet project.

Mac OSX is a very good OS and in some years I think it will be perfect. Very stable and never slows down. What I don't like is PPC apps and no games and not to many app choices.

2. Luckily most of mine are Universal/Intel

4. Yeah, Aero isn't that amazing. OS X had transparencies to in its Beta.

Its the best GUI I ever saw and when people say they dont like i cant understand it. But I dont care too much if they dont like it. I know not everybody likes everything.

I didn't really buy OS X for Aqua or Brushed Metal. Sure it looks nice but I like the command interface that OS X has. (Exposé, Dashboard, spring loaded folders, & Spotlight)

Don't forget the applications.

Aero has no practical purpose then trying to looking good. Try comparing that to Quartz Composer and Core Image/Video. Windows Flip 3D is just glorified Alt+Tab.

Amazing, whenever a PC pep joins, two things are apparent 1) I play games and 2) choice in software. I know you said you have an iMac and enjoy OS X, but why be bothered with an ancient OS that is nothing but trouble? So, you buy a Mac but want Vista OS aka XP SP3, strange. I am forced to use XP at work I know the BS that comes with them. XP SP3 will be nothing more than another weak effort on MS's part to keep up the Mac OS.

Aero is just a nasty rip-off of Aqua circa 2002. All that transparency and stuff has been and gone - it's distracting, annoying and pointless. We got rid of most of it by 10.3

Note: I'm a switcher but a tech head.

I believe that the OS X Beta did have the transparent window borders and windows just like Vista does now. The only problem is that with the transparencies you lost depth for your on screen applications. Try stacking or picking Windows when you can't even tell which one is on top of the other.

I've found that most OS X applications do a decent job of following Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and you get some nice carry overs from Linux/UNIX as well.

Good CLI-based application + OS X GUI goodness = WIN

Yeah you are right. I am basing my impressions of Vista on what it looks like ( but also about what I read). And I said after I use it I might like it more or less. But Xp is alright without the ugly look. Vista has a beautifull one and beside that some other new features I read about, so i THINK I will like it and want to try it out but only the RTM version
