While it's all good to laugh at a friends misfortune (to a point), the OP would probably better serve the Mac community if he loaned his Mac to his friend... maybe he'd like it enough to switch!

Remember kids when these situations arise, ask yourself "What would Steve Jobs do?" :D

This entire thread exemplifies why some Mac users are referred to as fanbois.

Y'all don't seem to realize how much damage you're doing to the Apple community. How would you feel if your Macintosh crashed and your friends took great pleasure in laughing at you and your computer?

Please cease and desist your childish behavior toward Windows users.

Are you saying that it's acceptable for you to laugh at the misfortune of other because some one else did it first?

I'll bet your Mom is really proud of you!

They can't help it. They're Mac users.

This problem seems to be - once again, when will these clowns actually get their heads around Vista - NVidia. Isn't it weird? When a printer or display driver has a problem with Leopard, it's the manufacturer's fault because it can't be Apples unless the evidence is overwhelming. When a printer or display adapter has a problem with Vista, it's Microsoft's fault.

It's no wonder that so many people are moving to Mac - given the utterly dumb comments I read on the blogosphere for starters, it really is the platform they are more suited to.

See, we are on a Mac forum. 90% of us are on here because we believe our OS to be superior to the OS not to be named. We all know someone that uses that other OS, and we have all been told at some point how silly we must be for using our OS. So we can come here and laugh harmlessly with other like-minded users about the other OS's problems. We truly would never wish any harm to any computer user, it is just humorous sometimes. It is kinda like watching America's Funniest Home Videos....no guy really takes pleasure in seeing another guy get his balls smashed by his 3 year old son swinging a bat.....but damn if it isn't funny when it happens.

lol, that early.

I would try safe mode, see if problem persist first.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

once in there,
check hardware manager to make sure everything is ok,
remove any suspicious options from start->run->msconfig->booting options
remove any suspicious app installed recently.

EDIT. also there is an system restoration (NOT restore to factory settings!), never really found it useful, but you can try to pick a earlier date and see if that works, it will NOT erase any personal data, so don't worry too much.

hahahaha oh dear, my house mate just walked in, he is running the latest vista, and complains that the last update for windows vista killed his mouse cursor. he cant see it and he cant use it and he has tried 5 different mouses as well. hahahaha oh dear Microsoft, he rang up their help line and they cant help ( says they are 'working on it' ) they also said on the phone this is an isolated problem but after some digging he found that many vista user's are losing there mice! glad i got outta that mess before vista came out! ( sorry if this turns into a vista bashing session! )

Vista is unstable and lacks driver support.

Try sp1 when it comes out on Vista or do what most are doing going back to the ever reliable xp pro with sp2.

Canada, eh?
To be fair, I've had this happen to my PowerBook numerous times, mostly when awakening from sleep or messing with video modes (like when setting up on a projector). You have no idea how embarrassing or annoying it is when your cursor is no longer visible, forcing either a restart or login/out again. And trust me, when my Mac misbehaves in a public setting, you can bet that I hear about it from PC users.

I participate on another forum, and I know one guy who takes it upon himself to say things like "Well, that's why I have a Mac, so I never have to deal with that problem" in response to any questions about computer issues, drivers, software, etc. (And this isn't some kid, he's a grown man, married, kids...) You can predict exactly how the rest of the thread goes. Not productive to our "cause" at all.

I don't get myself involved in those conversations, though I may permit myself to smile at people frustrated by Windows issues because I've been there too. That's why I switched back in 2003.

They don't work in Safe Mode either. Work fine until you get to Windows then nothing, might have to try the System Restore.

I'm sure 10.5.3 will bring a whole host a trouble for some users.

I'm still waiting for it to fix a whole host of troubles.

Something as simple as that might fix it. Has he looked (did you look) into the system manager or whatever its called now for what it has installed for Mice (USB).
There might just be a new driver that needs to be installed as well.

ok, work fine before windows welcome screen, that probably means the driver of touchpad, mice etc is broken or something there.

My suggestion

1. try plug different mice if you have more than one, see if it works

2. system restoration I mentioned is a windows function, if you can't control anything with keyboard/mice (build-in as well as external), I don't see how that can work

3. if the laptop is quite new (<2 yo), most pc has those "one-key restoration" method that extract the OS image from a hidden partition to recover everything. however, this will erase all personal data.

4. if possible, download knoppix linux *.iso and burn to a cd, boot the laptop with it, this would allow you to go into the computer and backup all import data to some external HDD. before (in case you want to) messing with restore/re-installation of OS.

I actually love Vista now....because its the reason I own a Mac!

I too got fed up with Vista (Im a windows tech mind you and can fix all the goofy stuff usually). One day I was transferring files from one external to another and it said 12 hours! The XP machine I usually did this on only ever took 2 hours....well using the xp machine wasnt an option so I let vista do the transfer. 90% of the way through the transfer failed and I flipped out, it was the last straw in a long list of problems and I held up my laptop and said "Who wants it!? $500!" a guy I work with snapped it up and I went online that moment and ordered a mac and couldnt be happier! (Now everyone in the dept just loves to bash my mac because they for some odd reason hate it even though none have ever used one.)

$500 Who wants it - class act man, your a class act..Love it...

The reason it took so long to transfer, I'll bet a dollar if a dime, is that Vista was checking every byte to see if you're transferring 'protected content'.
