Ok - so, can't find my copy of Windows 2000 so it looks like I'm going to have to buy a copy. Any recommendations for an OS? I'm thinking a version of XP but I don't know which one....

I personally run XP Home in my VMFusion because it has all I need. If you are only web browsing and running a few Poker programs then it should be all you need. My theory was XP Pro had more to go wrong, and I wouldn't touch Vista with someone else's...

Buy an OEM pack from an online computer parts/repair website, should be the cheapest way. OEM parts are supplied to people who build systems that they then sell on again, they are cheaper because the supplier of the system then has to sell the product, and offer support, and they don't come with any manuals - effectively cutting out some of the costs.

You can get all the support you need right here though :)

Why, what's wrong with vista? I'd like to know what machine the OP has. How much RAM and what speed is the CPU. If you aren't sure, when did you buy the machine and is it a MacBook, macbook pro? Maybe I missed it but I couldn't find that info anywhere.

I've got the unibody mbp with 4gb ram running vista 64 bit ultimate and it's fast. Unless you have an old computer, I recommend vista. Check prices, since you have limited uses for windows you might want to stick with xp.

What's wrong with xp pro or vista again?

Ok, my argument was for me XP Home was more than sufficient and it is the least moaned about OS, I personally don't need a bigger OS with more files, more cost and more potential to go wrong. As for Vista I do believe XP SP3 is more stable.

Because I'm not a computer techie and have always relied on my brother to do everything for me. I'm learning Greek!...but at least I'm learning! I guess I'm afraid I'm going to "break" the machine even though that can't happen....well, unless I threw it or dropped it or something....

You obviously took the time read this thread through then, she's stated that she not very tech savvy so i doubt all what you posted about RAM etc means squat to her, no ones slagging off Vista ( makes a change ) For her & her husbands needs XP is more than capable and Vista will probably just confuse matters

Hey guys, I appreciate all the advice. Got another question for you. If I run bootcamp and load XP, can I uninstall everything and then load the VMFusion when I get it to just try that? Or is it not a pain in the butt to have bootcamp loaded or active? What do you think? I guess what I'm getting at is that I would rather just be running Windows virtually....but my brother found my copy of XP that I left with him when he built my computer and I'm anxious to get my husband off the Windows computer and onto the Mac one. But, I still need to order the VMFusion and for some odd reason (long week) haven't done it yet. Can you understand this? Sorry - it has been a long day.

Games with Fusion

Wrong. There is accelerated GPU support to DirectX 9.0c (shader 2.0) support. It is fine with games keeping in mind the level of DirectX support available, and I have to wonder, have you actually tried any games in Fusion?

Do NOT use the Fat32 format as Windows XP cannot format a Fat32 partition larger than 32GB. You will need to format using NTFS.

Actually I have... I enjoy FPS games like COD and it is impossible to run with any meaningful framerate on Fusion. I own and use 8 copies of Fusion at my office and for graphic intensive games it is frustrating to emulate in Fusion. In fact, COD would not even start up with fusion since it looks for a graphics card when booting! Maybe you have had better luck Tucker, if so I would love to hear some specifics so I can enjoy the emulation as well. Thanks

Make sure you use XP with service pack 2.. any version earlier than this (sp 1 or earlier) will not install in boot camp. I have not tried sp1 or earlier with Fusion alone...

If you want to run Fusion of a partition then yes you can have what you like installed before downloading it. I've never run windows virtually so don't know about that. Oh & just so your aware if your copy of XP is a OEM version you will be breaking your EULA by installing it on another computer
