Wow, they let you open ports on the router and firewall but you can't install software on your PC?? That seems silly... We technically have a policy saying no installing anything even for those of us that are admin types but they realize that there are just some tools we need to have... Do you have a good work justification for wanting to get to your PC remotely? If you asked would they let you install VNC if you have a good reason?

(they're not too bright here) but yeah, I think I might be able to justify to them why we need this and get them to let me install it.

Good luck! I had to go to my boss and justify it too because I remote connect to servers from my workstation so she is SUPER picky about what I can and cannot install on my PC... She told me right off when she knew I was getting my iPhone that iTunes is a banned app and that she did not want me installing it on my computer even if I promised to only use it to backup my iPhone... When I went to her about the VNC app I explained that it meant that there was a better chance of me being able to fix stuff quickly afterhours and on the weekends because I would always have my iPhone but I rarely have a laptop with me. :)

Well, I just told my boss that I tried to "help" clean up the PC but I didn't have admin rights to download the utility I needed. So without even asking what utility, he gave me the password.

VNClite installed and working beautifully. Now I just got to figure out a way to permanently hide it from the Vista Notifications Area (lower right corner of the Vista screen) so it doesn't show up there at all as it's running... just in case any one questions what it is... ;)
