What is "really low" to one person might be "really loud" to another. Best you can do is compare yours to another iphone to see if they perform the same.

OK. Here's the deal on the speaker. Some people were complaining about their speaker being low, only to find that they still had some plastic covering the speaker or were blocking it with their hand.

If that's all it is for you, great!

We bought 2 phones, one was fine, the other had a speaker that could barely be heard. We took it into the apple store yesterday (no, we didn't have any plastic or hands blocking the speaker) and they confirmed that the speaker was defective. Unfortunately, they were out of replacement phones. Apparently they had stockpiled some phones for the purpose of swapping with defective ones, but they ran out of these. Solution...we're going back monday morning at 10am to swap out the phone.

Hope that helps.

Here is what I did and it worked - for me anyway.

I had the volume all the way up and it still was not loud enough (plastic is off). So while I was taking to someone I went into settings/sounds and the volume was all the way up. So I slide the volume control down and then up - wow it was so loud I had to turn it down. It sounds like a software bug to me - but this did fix the problem on my phone and my partners phone.

 Same problem here, just setup appointment for 2 tomorrow. Talked with one of my friends and he said he could here his as well. With mine there is just a faint whisper when you place the speakers right up to the ear. If they don't give me a new one/fix it, than I am getting all my money back.

I'm having the same issue

Let me first say I love 98% of the iphone experience so far. Including walking into my very crowded local apple store and walking out with one in 90 seconds. They had the line to the cash register clearly open and the crowd was pushed aside buying accessories and what not. But the volume level is seriously weak. I've missed multiple text msgs and phone calls cause i just couldn't hear it AT ALL. And the volume for a txt msg is far different than a phone call. It would be nice to set different ringers for things like txt msgs..so far it seems I have to just sit with the wimpy tone. I have it set for my alarm in the morning and I'm definitely using a backup alarm. Also the regular headset speaker was at a tolerable level when maxed out. I hope this is addressed in a software update. And yes I have my plastic off. This is my first post after being lazy and just reading this great site for a lonnnng time.

volume problems answers, and a question

OK...I fell for the plastic left on as well...it tionwas covering the speaker hole. Wish I would have just cut out the hole and left the rest..oh well. As for the settings, go into settings, iPod, then turn off he volume limit....tah dah!

Now I have a quesion. Does anyone know what the icon of a car does at the bottom right corner of Maps does? Enter an address and then hit it...it does nothing that I can tell...can't seem to find anything on it in fingertips, etc.
Thanks

My volume is o.k. when listening to songs or watching a movie, but it's really low when used as speakerphone. Is this the problem you had? How did you demonstrate the low volume to the Mac genius?

The little car turns on the traffic indicators on the map. If you area supports it, and only on certain roads, you will see the road overlayed with a Red, Yellow or Green line.

The color indicates traffic flow on that road.

iPhone exchange no speaker volume

Update to my previous post. Took the phone in this morning and had the mac genius look at. One of the first things he did was check the volume by taking it all the down and than all the way from the settings. Still had no volume so they decided to replace the unit. Well that was all good except they were all out of the 8 gig, so left knowing that I would get a new one sometime. Than 2 hours later get a call from the store manager that they had one for me. The new one sounds awesome, very pleased that the speaker actually works.

Here are a few pointers for those that may have to get a phone exchanged.
-if you can bring in your macbook with the itunes that you use. This way you and mac genius can activate your new phone on the spot and check for any problems. I brought mine just in case and I am glad I did.
-I had to call ATT from the mac store as we were setting it up because the system kept kicking the phone out because of the new IMEI number. They just swaped out the SIM cards. When going through the setup it looks like its trying to add another dataplan, but don't worry it won't put 2 dataplans on the same phone. I had the ATT check my account after we got done and everything was fine.

The lady I talked to ATT was awesome and very helpful, treated me and the mac guy with top notch class. They must be getting bonus on customer service or are very happy to be on the att apple team. The Mac genius and store manger very helpful.

Nice job APPLE.

I had a low volume issue as well. Genius Bar at my local Apple store replaced it right away. He was nice enough to change the IMEI# on my art acct and swap the Sim card. Walked out in 30 mins with a fully functional iPhone!
