Was at apple store today, I ask an employee who was working on my phone, for those of us that have a 5S, & get the AppleWatch, will we be able to use Applepay. His response was, "no it's not going to work because the 6 & 6Plus have an NFC antenna that allows Applepay to work so those will only work with the watch" I'm thinking, it's pretty sad if the consumers know more than the Apple employees because I could have sworn the AppleWatch has built in NFC which will make Applepay work regardless. Or am I wrong?

Apple has not made an official statement on that at this time. Apple Store employees have not yet been trained in the workings of the Apple Watch and are thus giving it their best personal guess.

According to Apple.com/apple-pay

... apple retail employees aren't always the brightest.

Notice, it has to be paired to your phone and will only work in stores and not within apps.

The watch will work with iphone 5 and higher and it will work for Apple pay because the watch has NFC built in so you just hold your watch up to the terminal and it buzzes for a sec and it beeps and it's done.

Apple employees don't have any inside info. Any thing they know you can know. They will not receive :apple:Watch training until about mid February.

Also you can use the :apple:Watch for ApplePay without even having you iPhone with you as long as it was paired.

Right now I can't imagine having my watch without my phone. What happens if your watch loses contact with your skin and you don't have your phone with you? I assume you would need your phone to re-establish Pay for the watch.

Possibly but there is also a possibility of entering a PIN on the :apple:Watch to reactivate ApplePay.

Apple's website says Pay will work with Watch in store with 5, 5s and 5c.

https://www.apple.com/apple-pay/

Right, so I'm wondering if what he said is true, what is it about an ip6 that's so special where it's the only phone to make Applepay work with the AppleWatch?? The watch itself has it's own built in NFC antenna like iphone 6.....there's no app needed for Apay to work on the 6 or plus, so the 5S has got to be fine with the watch using Apay. I can't see Apple making their newest feature not compatible to the 5S I mean hundreds of millions didn't feel the need to upgrade to a 6.

Have you read the responses (rhetorical)? You were given incorrect info. ApplePay WILL work for you. End of story.

GO TO http://www.apple.com/apple-pay/ and read for yourself.

What he said is not true, stop wondering that. He's just a minimum wage retail peon, and hasn't received updated training.

Apple.com tells you all you need to know.

Wow, do you **** on all retail employees or just the ones at Apple? ;)

Notwithstanding the rage face, Menel is correct. There is no way Apple retail employees are equipped to answer all questions regarding the compatibility of the iWatch. I'd stick with what Apple publishes online..

For real.

"Hey, I know this hasn't been released yet and has only been shown to the public (including you) a handful of times... But will this track my calorie consumption if I have an iPhone 5S that has Nike+ installed?!? ... No?!? Are you just stupid or did I incorrectly read that it would?!?"

Everyone seems to think that Apple retail has the same level of insight as Apple corporate. News flash, they don't. Heck, I have several friends in different departments at Apple corporate (Cupertino & Austin) and they were just as surprised by the Watch announcement as the rest of us outside the company. I mean, they had a feeling it was coming, just like the rest of the world, but that was their first glimpse of the actual device.

This whole ideology of tricking the Apple employee is just dumb. It'd be one thing if an engineer, who worked in the skunkworks area of Apple, missed a question. They designed and "built" the device/system. An Apple retail (and probably 90% of corporate) employee though? You might as well be asking your buddy who'll fix your computer for a 6 pack of beer. The only difference is they're much more knowledgable on trending repairs and issues since they deal with them all day.

/rant ;)

To the original question, yes, it should work. If the Watch releases, and the proposed idea doesn't work, don't be surprised. There have been several system / device releases where planned features were dropped shortly before release without a public announcement. This is the main reason I tell the employees in my office to "wait and see" vs planning on some oddball feature being included.

And it is called need to know. This is how Apple is so good at keeping info under wraps. For every 10 extra people that know something the chances of leaked info goes up exponentially.

Pretty sure hundreds of millions is a bit of an exaggeration...

Apple "Geniuses" are notorious for making up answers to questions instead of just admitting they don't know.

Can you add cards to a 5s? Because the apple site states iPhone 6, iPad mini 3 and iPad air

Apple "retail peons" make a bit more than minimum wage, ESPECIALLY the "geniuses"

Ahhhh....remember when Apple Retail staff actually knew stuff about their products? Now they just bs whoever they want. Best time was when I was there about 5 years ago. If it wasn't "fact" then you don't say it! My how times have changed!

Sweet... Wait a minute so you can add a card like the mini3 and air2 but their both limited to online purchases only

Store purchase only, for :apple:Watch since it won't have browser built-in, or complicated apps.

Haha yes.
My friend who is an electrical engineer works on the Apple chips (like A8 M8 etc) at Apple and he was not up to date on the rumors and the announcements.
It's simply crazy to expect some lowly paid retail employees to know everything about Apple product ecosystem.
