I love my Mac Pro, and have dumped a lot of money into it. It's excellent and stable, yet I'm afraid to use Lion and still don't like Final Cut X. You really have to focus on what tools you want to use, then build the system that works best with those (software) tools.

The next FCPX update looks really great. But to each their own.

Lion is a problem. I've noticed a few things in Mountain Lion that may correct some of that.

Just been too long on Adobe, I guess. I went through Media100 in the '90's, Avid in the '00's, all the while playing around in Premiere since 4.2, and finally getting serious with it starting around 6.5 to Pro 1.0. Then I got into After Effects, and I was hooked.

Despite all the systems I've used being different, they all had the same basics, and were all easy to get used to... but FCP X hasn't given me anything to get excited about. I seem to be constantly fighting it instead of using it, and very little works as I expect it to.

Avid was interesting with the symbols for keys, but it still did what I expected it to do. With FCP X, I feel like I'm playing with a puzzle, or riding a Wild Wacky Action Bike.
 
...Actually, I started building my own computers in the days of DOS.

My first tinkering was to add the "shift key mod" on an Apple ][+. ;) I used to enjoy doing DIY's, but it has morphed into a chore that I no longer enjoy and now personally avoid as much as humanly possible.

... But with similar systems a build-your-own is always cheaper because you aren't paying for someone else's labour, nor are you getting a one-stop warranty coverage. Both of these add to the $$ costs of store bought system. Build it yourself, and you transfer those $$ costs to yourself and your time. It's not free, it's just a different measurement of cost.

And that's the crux of why this is always a difficult comparison: it is apples (money only) vs oranges (money + labor + time/hassles). Fortunately, you're recognizing that there are different fruits present here, with there being real world costs that come out of accounting columns that don't have a "cash" label on them.
