I'll probably buy the 27" iMac in the next revision. You never know when it comes, perhaps between June and October.

The cheaper model will probably get a dual-core i5 processor (I would guess an i5-530 2.93 GHz or perhaps an i5-540 3.06 GHz).

I don't see much room for change in the more expensive model, at least in terms of CPU. Intel is not showing signs of replacing the i5-750 and the i7-860 for newer models, and Apple is not going to use the more expensive i7-870 (or the future i7-880) or the power-hungry i7-930. But I'd like to see Intel reducing the prices of its i7 models now that AMD is catching up with its new US$ 200 six-core "Thurban" processors.

The GPU will probably get an upgrade, perhaps an ATI Radeon HD 5750 or 5770 in the more expensive model.

I can't see what else Apple will come up with, but who knows?

I feel like I'm the only person in the world interested in a 21.5" iMac hehe.

Hi there...

If wondering, I'm interested in new iMac 21.5" as well. Was actually going to buy a refurb 21.5" unit this week (at discount selling price) but decided to hold off a little longer. With spring / summer now upon us, I now spend LESS time on the personal computer. This winter, I'll use computers much more. Anyway... This winter, I'm hoping Apple will update their 21.5" line with new i5 chip. If / when they do, I will buy one (for sure).

Like many, I was worried the iMac 21.5" is much smaller then previous 24". But if you compare the screen sizes within the CPU TEST video, the new 21.5" looks larger then previous 24". re: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJuUr3u0-C0&feature=related

Thus, the more DPI 21.5" looks like a good screen size - for my wants.... To me, 27" is "too much". Especially since Apple removed Font Sizing from their current OS. Can you say "super large screen with super small icons"? Hopefully, Apple will distribute an OS patch - with Font sizing ability (like their preivous OS).

.

i was going to buy an iMac but i am going to wait for the update in June onwards.

My Day

1. went to apple store
2. asked for i7
3. asked to check for yellow tinge
4. i checked three iMac's for the yellow tinge, and all three i7's had it, even the sales assistant said that she could see it. (They put a blue sticker on all the one's that we opened)
5. I left the apple store empty handed - BUT with my wallet intact

SMART move... Waiting for Rev 2.... Onward....

I'm waiting, I'd love a 27" I7 with 8gb RAM, however, every one that I've seen so far in person has the yellow screen issue, it's simply not acceptable.

You might as well buy now, as I doubt there will be any screen improvement next revision. They may tweak the other specs, but the screen is still going to have some degree of yellow. It's inherent in the design technology.

As someone said, you either settle or return for a refund like many users have. I know folks on both camps, so it is a personal preference.

Also, an Apple CSR has stated that there will now only be a ONE TIME screen replacement. If you dont like it, keep it or return it for a refund. Before anyone jumps down my throat, Call Apple and they will tell you yourself.

Well, that's the problem, I know I wouldn't be capable of putting up with a fault on a desktop I'd paid £1700 for.

I thought i7 was a build to order option and stores only carried i5s?

I bought a base model 27" from the refurb store two weeks ago and it is perfect - and easily fast enough for what I do, Photoshop work. My only regret is that i wish I did this earlier.

because most people don't say i got a perfect imac and love it they just use it! if you don't want to buy don't! if you can't afford to buy now then wait. what's the refresh really going to have? a better processor than the i7? i don't think so. a better video card? maybe 5% better. blu-ray? no! ssd maybe but apples ssd's are never the cutting edge so buy one yourself. i'm so sick of the negative people on here makes me want to hang myself! :)

OP isnt saying your imac is broken. The fact of the matter is, if OP doesnt need a new computer NOW, waiting isnt going to hurt anything. I guarantee you the REV 2 iMac will be better, even if its marginal, it will be better. Technology will improve, obviously you have to eventually put your foot down but given apple's typical refresh rate, if OP can wait a few months, it should be worth while... if not, at least the back to school deals will probably start popping up.

i was ready to buy when they first announced the imacs but im glad i didnt due to all the issues.. now that it seems most issues have subsided, ive decided that i can wait for the next revision.

Considering I just dropped 2G on Monday, I'm expecting the next rev to be announced any day now.. ha

i'm planning on buying an imac in the near future...finally making the switch from pc. fairly confident that I settled on the 27" i7 with 8mb of RAM. While I'm certain I'm going to purchase one, I've thought about holding out for a few months in the event that the new imacs are upgraded, even though that time frame is somewhat of an unknown. I'd like to pull the trigger when it's brand spanking new. Thanks for any insight or recommendations....

If you wait a few more years, you'll probably get a 16 core 54" iMac for the price of today's 27" Quad Core.

Every computer is already out-dated and old on the day that it is shipped. The current iMac models are already last years technology, and the forthcoming generation of iMacs will also be yesterday's technology when they come out.

The thing is: You have to base your purchase decision on what -- YOU -- need -- NOW --. If the 27" iMac fits your needs (and wallet) TODAY, it's a good purchase. If not, you have to buy something else - and by that I mean a product that is already available today, not some science fiction product of the future.

On the other hand, if you can afford to wait for a few more months, chances are that you do not even need a new machine at all. So you can easily safe your money or spend it on something else that is more useful than another electronic toy.

The 27" iMac i5 and i7 are great and quiet all-in-one machines - they'll offer the power of a Quad Mac Pro inside a rather thin wide screen display. That's about as sexy as a computer can get in the year 2010. Except for slightly better benchmark results, the forthcoming Late 2010 models will probably not be that much of an evolutionary development, at least not in the higher end models. Even magic has its limits.

Same boat as you. I have until September to buy a new computer.

Surely, by then, they'll have updated the CPUs/GPUs of the 21.5" option.
