I’m actually curious about that situation. If it did get a refresh, would they just ship people the new refreshed version or would they cancel those orders and expect people to order the new one?
In the past they have shipped the refreshed version. Apple usually let’s stock deplete on end of life items so they have to ship new version. No guarantee on anything here obviously but we’ll see. I just think this is a weird coincidence but fingers are crossed

That’s never stopped Apple before.
Wouldn't piss me off. I use my iPad every day and if I waited for each hypothetical release, I would be perpetually waiting and not enjoying my device. There is no Ipad software that comes close to pushing the 2020, or the 2018. This iPad will be able to tackle anything thrown at it in the foreseeable future.

I still have fairly capable iPads (2017 Pro) so I could just continue enjoying those. :p

I regularly use A10, A10X and A12 devices interchangeably and to be honest, even normal A10 suffices performance-wise for my usage. It’s improved efficiency and features I’m after.

IPad Pro 2018 12.9” remains the best Apple product I have ever bought - runs just as impressively as the day I bought it. I look forward to the upgrade but frankly I’m not sure how much difference it will make in real world usage. I want to just buy a new model with more RAM and more storage, I assume it will last several years

Okay, we made it through all of the presentations without an updated iPad Pro. I’m assuming it will come in March at this point. I decided to look at past geek bench scores to get an idea of what to expect under the hood:

CPU GPU
A121109/24445345
A141585/41989215
A12X1113/46089020
A14X
M1 (A14)1498/750812310 (approx)

I believe the m1 is really the A14X in disguise! it should end up somewhere around a 1,400 single, 7,000 multi, like the m1! i can’t wait to get it

It would be a total overkill for an iPad with iPadOS, haha. Still I would want one.

I’m waiting too. But for a different hope. Yes I want the a14x, but I want it because I’m hoping we will get some ipadOS surprises this spring.

Macs can now play all iPad apps, right? Well, could they allow iPads to play Mac apps? FCP? Etc? With that much power, why not? The MacBookair can. There may be a few reasons I don’t know about other than the touch interface... but iPads have mouse and keyboard support now.

I’m just hoping this next iPad will sit right strongly in the next chapter of iPad. (I actually think the 2018 was the start of it - magic keyboard) but I’m hoping 2021 will be the refined, future proof product ready to keep blurring the Mac/iPad line. I don’t want macOS on iPad. I just want some Mac apps to work seamlessly across devices (Photoshop, indesign, illustrator, fcp). That would be legit. And a reason to be dragging feat on iPad versions of Adobe and not having apple silicon versions ready yet..

Would explain the 12.9” only rumors too.

a guy can dream. If this happens, you’ll want a beast chip and 8gb ram. Maybe they would even let you upgrade like macs to 16gb. ?‍♂️ Now I’m in lalaland. I know, I know.

reel me back in, folks...

...would seriously cannibalize Mac sales... terrible interface for mouse focused apps... Adobe is always slow... let’s hear it.

One can never keep up and tech moves quickly each year.
But with reports of an A14x mini-LED iPad Pro only 6 months away, it's making it difficult to pull the trigger on the current 11" iPP.

Frankly, my needs aren't even great enough to warrant getting such a beast. But it's a nice to have.

So who else is waiting for an A14x iPP?
hope you like the 12.9 version only though lol

Some of the scores are off (M1 goes up to 1700 in single and 22000 in GPU, around 18000 for the 7 cores GPU, and A14 GPU goes up to 12000). Anyway regarless of bechmarks, M1 is an adpated version of A14X. Federighi himself said it when asked to compare it to a A14X.
A12: 2 power core and 4 efficiency cores
A12X/Z 4 p.c. and 4 e.c. (same single core)
A14 2 p.c. and 4 e.c
M1 4 p.c. and 4 e.c. (same single core as A14, actually slightly higher, contrary to the figures above)
So yes A14X will have the same performance, maybe very slight decrease in maximum clock, minus the things that were specifically added for MacOS.
What won't come to iPads soon is M1X, rumored to have 8 p.c. and 4 e.c., that thing should break the 10000 threashold in multicore

My thoughts exactly, and with the Black Friday deals on iPad Pros going on this weekend I was very tempted to pull out the credit card (again) and yet hesitant knowing that a new one is around the corner.

I'm looking to upgrade from my iPad mini 4, served me well but getting really long in the tooth.

Just ordered a 2020 iPad Pro 11” yesterday on Black Friday. The white bright spot on my 10.5 iPad Pro is getting annoying and I’d like to have USB C to transfer folders and files from an external drive into the files app.

I would have gone for the iPad Air but I dont like the idea of losing the 4 speakers or ProMotion. I hope they update the 11” Pro and don’t discontinue it, as I’ll probably throw the one I just bought on eBay and upgrade to a A14X mini LED iPad Pro 11 (provided early adopters don’t have issues with it.)

I wanted to get the MBA M1 addition to my iPP 11”, but I am waiting to see the new 12.9” iPP, I really want the best screen I can get. If it proves worthy I see myself getting the 12.9 and MK and handing down the 11” to a family member. I want 14X and LED, 256GB SSD base would be nice and 8GB of Ram.

... And I pulled the trigger on a iPad Pro 11” 128 GB yesterday. Woke-up and first thing I checked Best Buy and saw they had $775 open box - certified (new units that went for $729.99 are sold-out). Combined with the $120 Best Buy gift card I traded-in my old iPad mini 4 for brought it down to $655.99 before tax. Very excited, it should be at my door a week from this time of this post.

Just out of curiosity, how much would the total be including tax?

Just my 2 cents, but I still think March is an optimistic estimate of next iPad Pro release timeline. Even with the minor upgrade the iPad Pro's got in March of this year, the iPad is miles ahead of any competition. If you want a tablet and don't have a hard requirement to run Windows on it, then there is nothing even close to what the current iPad is. I realize the rumors are a Q1 launch, but I'm skeptical. With all the covid impact to manufacturing, I'm am skeptical TSMC and Apple can manufacture the volume of A14X chips necessary to do an iPad refresh without eating into their manufacturing capability for the iPhone 12 models. Also, they need to launch the M1 and, presumably M1X Macs next year too. I'm just very skeptical they are able to pull all of that off in first half 2021 and iPad seems like the obvious choice to put on the back burner. But, again that's just my personal guess. We will see.

There are rumors that the 12.9" will be the only Pro getting mini-LED, which could mean the 11" Pro getting discontinued at the next update, especially with the new Air having much the same form factor. If you are set on the 11" size and the current one is more than powerful enough for you, I would probably consider just getting it now.
would suck 11 pro disappears. I hate 12 size i do love 11 size with the magic keyboard. i hope apple does a upgrade option including magic keyboard

I just got an 11” iPadPro 2020. Not unboxed it yet.

I am still “waiting for an A14X” but I don’t think an iPad Pro update will happen until Q4 2021.

I think M1X will be the next chip release for the next phase of Apple Silicon Macs and I see that as the silicon focus for now. There is zero need for a new iPad Pro chip given how good the A12Z is, but a drastic need for better Mac chips (who would buy an iMac right now?).

I honstly do hope for an A14X iPP asap (I will get one and give my A12Z iPP to my son) but don’t see it happening.

I got a 2018 iPad Pro 11' earlier this year, lol. Been quite an interesting ride. That said, for what I use my iPad Pro for, I'm not sad (reading). I would have liked the 6GB of ram in the 2020 iPad Pros but ... Apple is only offering me $400 for my $1100+ iPad so... can't really justify $500+ for 2GB of extra ram (I don't need it for reading anyway).

I still have fairly capable iPads (2017 Pro) so I could just continue enjoying those. :p

As much as I would love to upgrade --- my bank can't afford $1000 iPads every few years - like you, I hope to get years of use out of this thing yet. :)

I do hope that Apple continues the iPad Pro 11. This form factor has been PERFECT for me this year - I've given up all my paper notebooks and do all my reading on this device. It has been my most used Apple device.

Funnily enough, I do have $1200 per year ($100/month) from the entertainment budget allotted towards iPad upgrades.

Of course, Apple just had to raise the price ceiling for top storage+cellular to $1700-1900 before tax ($1900-2100 with tax) without any accessories so that raised my standards/expectations for upgrades as well. Features I wouldn't have minded lacking in a $1100-1200 iPad, I do very much mind when it's at 40-60% higher cost. I want more bang for my buck if I'm gonna be paying that much.
