Coming back about my GPU usage on the 5k screens:
I was working again today at another identical Mac Pro but with dual 1440p screens attached and observed the vram memory usage here - and saw that on this machine, both card‘s vram is being taxed. GPU usage still only on one core, but both VRAMs are being utilize, while on my machine, the one card is entirely idle and everything feels sluggish as hell.

On the 1440p setup, vram is at about 80% and 65%, while on my machine it‘s just at 100% on one card and 0% on the other.

Is it possible that because of the dual TB connector setup somehow the machine doesnt distribute the GPU power properly?

So very bored of standing by, watching the Apple conveyor belt spit out iPhones, AirPods, services, TV shows and OS updates while the Mac Pro languishes somewhere at the back of the queue. At least let us pre-order the damn thing so we can wait for it to arrive, rather than wait for any news whatsoever. God, this thing better be good when it turns up. /fume

Tell us your configuration you are hoping to get.

One of my groups that works on commercials in Japan is requesting a MP. I usually don't get involved in the specs of the computers - but I have to keep them on a tight chain on this one so I have been reading all the posts on Macrumors. This group is hard-core Apple operating system. They use FCPX and PP.
Looks like they should be able to get their workflows done with the 16-core, 192 GB RAM, one AMD Radeon Pro Bega II Duo, After Burner, 4TB SSD, Pro Display XDR (possibly Promise Pegasus). No wheels or stand. VESA Yes. This leaves a lot of upgradability left on the table.

Just got the other working group a PC. Not happy about that but they argued for it. They are PP and After Effects to the core. The office is split - of course - which splits my brain. But you have to keep your creative employees happy and productive.

Both machines are tax deductions and create profit for the company. The PC wasn't cheap.

That seems kind of odd. You are splitting the 5K video feeds over two TB controllers ( and paired DP feeds). Each horizontal pair of TB ports there are hooked to the same Controller ( What Apple calls a "bus" is pragmatically a controller and each of those controllers is fed two DP streams. ). The 5K monitor just needs two streams, so each horizontal pair has two.

Depending upon how the GPU's display processing subsystem is broken up, I would expect that adjacent GPU output streams to be better matched timing wise that random pairing of two streams ( which is a bit what you set up is at on the spectrum of set ups. ) Multi-Stream Transport (MST) stream 1+2 and 3+4 seems more natural than 1+3 and 2+4 . IF the display subsystem is set up to more easily pair evens and odds together then this would be a better match.

Ah this is a good hint, I‘ll try that an report back if it makes any difference!

exactly! Or at the VERY LEAST, provide the full configuration details

Ahg I was close... but no cigar..

And a launch STILL of this year.

Maybe next Tuesday now?

In the transcript of the earnings call, Tim Cook made one, very focused statement about the Mac Pro:

And for our pro customers who push the limits of what Mac can do, we’re very excited about the upcoming launch of our newly redesigned Mac Pro this fall, which we are proud to be manufacturing in Austin, Texas.

I parse that as meaning it's coming within the next month or two, not this week, or the next.

I think it's good news in that he gave a specific timeframe, not an indeterminate one, so it hasn't hit a roadblock pushing it to next year or something. It also sounds like the return to Austin is working out. Just hope they can ramp up the volume quickly.

Based on previous Mac Pro and iMac Pro history, I'd guess they'll go for a mid-December release.

I'm guessing orders start this week or next.

Actual ship dates? Sometime in the Fall, depending on configuration. Probably spread over November.

There isn't a huge reason for Apple to wait to take orders. Will even help them determine what components to prioritize in production.

If it was going to be December, Apple would have just said "by the end of the year."

What do you guys think- Are you just gonna jump on the orders, or waiting for the first reviews, just to figure out what‘s the best config for the get-go, and to have a clear understanding of what can and what can‘t be manually upgraded later?

I’ve been thinking a good indication of how often Apple will update the Mac Pro is if they update the iMac Pro. There are now new Xeon chips suitable for the iMac Pro, so I’m hoping Apple does update this soon, just to show they are keeping their eye on the ball with future updates.

The season didn't start until September 23 and only ends December 22. Technically, Apple has loads of time left to fulfil it's 'Coming Autumn/Fall' message.

That all depends on how soon reviews and benchmarks appear. Frankly I've waited so long I'm ready to pull the trigger and ask questions later. I'm aiming for 24 core (16 at worst) and a single Radeon Pro Vega II Duo to start with. SSD and RAM are secondary, but I'll go as big as I can afford/justify. It's a pretty simple calculation for me.

It ends 22nd December, no?

Learned in school in Ireland it was August to October, the Irish state weather service states September to November actually, and now you're saying October to December?

Appears the definition is geographically vague to say the least!

Same, I'm getting so impatient now I'll order the moment it's possible. Willing to settle for the stock 8-core 6000 euro option if upgrade pricing is crazy, but would ideally like a 12-core model with faster memory and a larger SSD. If it's too expensive I can always upgrade the SSD later, and use PCIE storage solutions in the meantime.

Will be using it primarily for Audio work and software development and I already have a gaming PC, so graphics aren't an urgent priority for me. Can always upgrade later, that's what's great about a tower Mac Pro!

You expect the CPU to be user upgradable?
