Waiting for More GB?

A guy at the gym noticed my iPhone and smirked, "I'm waiting for it to get at least 'x' GBs."

Okay, I have read these types of comments and excuse me if I don't get it. How many GBs do your non-iPhone cell phones have, folks? How many GBs does the Verizon Chocolate phone's music player have?

Most cell phones have a few MBs, and you have to expand the storage with a card, yes? But the iPhone comes out with 8GB built in, and people can't see it as anything other than an inadequate iPod.

Oh well. I love my iPhone. I created a lite playlist just for it, and I've never put a music list on any cell before.

I totally see where you are coming from, but I also see what this person means because Apple pushes it as an iPod with video as well as a phone, so people expect to be able to hold all of their music, TV shows, movies, and such. But yes, they should be grateful of what Apple is supplying.
 
My Sanyo M1 has 1GB of built-in memory... I just wish it was expandable.

Aside from my dream of the day the Apple iPhone comes to Sprint... :rolleyes:
 
huh, its an interesting question.

how about the capability of expansion? There is no way you can put more than 8G data on an iPhone. While You can do so on those expendable smartphones.
 
i thought about this a lot before I bought my iphone. One day though it dawned on me that i would never need more than 8gb's on my phone really. Here is my rational, 8gb's is plenty for trips and for times when you are doing stuff during the day. For home stereo use or bose docking for in my room I'm always going to want huge storage, but with the home stereo dock or bose thingy it is going to get super annoying to always stop the music to answer the phone or send a text. So you are probably always going to need a seperate ipod for home use; can you just imagine having people over and you are playing music before you go out or something and you have to keep stoping the music because you have to alwasy answer your phone, it would be brutal. That is when I decided that 8gb is plenty, obviously more is always better because then you don't have to re-sync as much, but not a big deal enough to wait for more storage. That was really long to explain, sorry
 
Alot of people are always waiting until "X" is obtained. Usually it never is. I used to be like that, but what is the point? If you want something, get it. If its not what you want, how are you waiting?
 
Personally I like to carry my entire media library in my pocket and my 60gb iPod is almost full and I'm going to need something bigger soon. That's one of the major things keeping me from the iPhone (that and my Verizon contract).
 
I have 47 gb of music. I have a 40 gb Ipod and a 512mb shuffle. The shuffle wound up getting much more use, although I use the 40gb ipod in my car. Unless the iphone is all you have to put your music on I think 8gb is plenty. Now if there were more apps available to download into the iphone and you could use it to store files I might be yearning for more memory.
 
Yea.. the whole idea of waiting for new versions seems so funny to me. There will always be a new version to acquire. And each version will be given its time to market. Such is with many things. Meanwhile, you're waiting around and missing out entirely. I don't get it.
 
for what I do with my iPhone, 8 is more than enough.

I don't see the need to carry around 40 gigs of music and videos with me. That's what my laptop is for.

I'm sure others disagree. That's fine.

I just keep 4-5 gigs of music on my iPhone. When I get bored, I bring in different music or playlists and swap others out.

I go through "moods" with my music and I don't need every song available all the time.

Now if I were going on a long road trip, I might bring my 30 gig ipod along just so I wouldn't have to fuss with changing songs every couple of days.
 
i think the started of this thread really just made a great point. I feel the same way. people will always complain about what they dont have rather then what they do have.
 
If I were given the choice between carrying a ipod & a phone...or a iphone that holds my music collection... the choice is obvious. I don't like using playlists... I want to be able to pick ANY of my music from my 60+gig collection. If Apple is touting the iphone zas the next gen ipod than they need to bump the HD space up to be on par with AT LEAST the smallest ipod. (not nano)

I will not buy one until i can fit my whole library onto it.
 
Call an average song 4 megs and with 60 gigs being 60 thousand megs, you have over 15,000 songs or a roughly $14, 850 investment on your music collection if all bought via iTunes.

Pretty impressive investment!

Or do you instead expect Apple to design their phones to cater to people who don't pay for their music?
 
I think people who are waiting for "X" GB on an iPhone are mostly the ones who own a large iPod 40+GB's. They got used to carrying every piece of musical composition they own on a single device... I agree there's a sort of satisfaction in having that. I have about 4000 files in iTunes and it was satisfying to know they all fit on my iPod.

But that's where the buck stops. A small satisfaction. I think people need to give managing playlists a shot.

It's actually pretty easy to do in iTunes. Use smart playlists, that update and sort by date added, genre, personal rating, you can even use tags (key words) if you make use of the comments box. I use key words like "workfriendly" to mark songs that I can play at work. or "drivingmusic" or anything else. smart playlists auto update any song i mark with keywords into the correct playlist.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I think some people are just spoiled and forgot how sensible it is to manage what you bring with you. You don't have to lug 2 weeks worth of music every time you leave the house.

We don't cancel our flights because our entire wardrobe and shoe collection won't fit in the overhead compartment do we?

Think back before mp3. We didn't lug 8 suitcases full of CD's into the car to take a road trip. You just take what you want, what you like. Even if you did bring the CD towers into the car with you ...Why?

8 GB on phone is gigantic by cellphone comparison and it's actually not that bad on the iPod scale either:

iPod : 30 - 80GB
iPhone: 4 - 8GB
iPod nano: 2 - 4 - 8GB
iPod shuffle: 1GB

I just made random playlist of mp3 files.. 5.19GB = 1544 songs, 3 days,17 hours,44 minutes of audio. If can't imagine anyone not being able to make amazing playlists out of 1500+ songs....unless they really haven't tried at all ;) ....and still have room left over for video.

Uhh yeah, i really hate people, especially strangers, that give their smart ass opinions even when you don't ask for it. I just had someone say something similar to that to me at the gym too, something about waiting for a price drop and the prices are crazy... so I said "well good for you! I'm also sure you're paying $60 a month for your 24-hour membership too huh? I always see you here chit-chatting instead of working out, what a bargain"

I can't stand people who always have to open their mouth
 
I think it just depends on your usage. I'm more interested in the iPhone's Internet and phone capabilities, although having pictures with me has been a surprising bonus. I've got my 8 GB 1/2 filled. If I was really into movies/TV and wanted tons of music, I would probably wait.

Of course, there's always a subset of people who counteract their inadequateness by making projecting everything around them as inadequate.
 
the reason why they cant put any more GB's until 08 is because the prices are so high. Just be patient and they will come. A 16Gb flash the size of the 8GB is about 180. That would increase the cost of the phone by about 50-100 dollars. I dont think i want that to happen. Be patient, just as we were withthe iPod.
 
Considering that the Nano is the best selling iPod for Apple, I think that 4-8 gb is plenty for most of your average consumers.

On a different note, I had somebody ask me yesterday if I really spend $3000.00 for my iPhone.
I just told her no I got mine for a deal of $599.00 and if she like to get in on one she needs to go to the Apple store since they are selling them for that right now.

Aren't you jumping the gun just a bit accusing people of stealing their music if it wasn't purchased at the iTunes music store?!?! A long time ago in a galaxy far far away people would actually have a physical collection of their music... First it was on vinyl record albums, then magnetic tape followed by optical compact discs....

Honestly the real reason is because the fact that they start small and move big.

why not sell you something with 8gb for 600 bucks first then when they need an update they make it 15 or 20 gb for 600 bucks and so on. its always how apple has worked and we all know it.

Yes. But other phones don't cost an arm&leg, they don't claim to be an mp3 player either. I will be getting an iPhone when it comes to Europe, but 8 gegs is definitely not enough for my needs. Specially given what the device can do; movies, photos, music.

Um, many people do have hundreds of CDs, add that to the iTunes songs, plus some encode at a higher level than 128, and we also have iTunes TV Shows and movies.

Everything on mine is legit and even my 60 GB video iPod is nearly full.
