Or do you instead expect Apple to design their phones to cater to people who don't pay for their music?

By your logic Apple shouldn't sell an iPod over 8GB.

I have over 150 GB of music which is all ripped from CDs I own. While I'm fine with my 8, twice the size would be twice as nice.

not at all. Rather my point is that people who spend many thousands of dollars of their music collection are not the norm, and I wouldn't expect Apple to cater to statistical outliers with their latest and greatest.

If you or others paid for every one of your albums, good for you. I highly doubt that is the rule rather than the exception.

If I were given the choice between carrying a ipod & a phone...or a iphone that holds my music collection... the choice is obvious. I don't like using playlists... I want to be able to pick ANY of my music from my 60+gig collection. If Apple is touting the iphone zas the next gen ipod than they need to bump the HD space up to be on par with AT LEAST the smallest ipod. (not nano)

I will not buy one until i can fit my whole library onto it.

Most iPhone users don't need that much space. I have 1000s of songs, 8 videos, and almost 1000 pictures and still 3+ GB left on my phone. Most people don't even use that much.
It's already $600. No reason to increase the price by putting in more space that only people like you would need.

Most...have you spoken with the majority of iPhone users? Much like you, I'm going to speculate what most phone users want. The conclusion I've drawn, based solely on my needs, is that most of them want at least 20GB.

I would think that people who have less than 10GB of music are in the minority. Otherwise the large capacity iPods would it on the shelves compared the the smaller ones.

if it goes up it will go up because of their desire to make the iPhone a tool for those who want to watch video.

One can make the argument that you can get around the storage issue with music by making playlists and just keeping your favorites at the time, but with movies, you simply cannot carry that many around with you unless they do a real bump in size.

Here's an idea: If you want something, buy it. If somebody wants to wait, let them wait in peace.

LOL @ all the waiter haters.

Some of you seem to have such strong feelings about those who decide to wait. Seriously, why do you care what they do? What impact does it have on your life? Is it about Apple stock? The satisfaction of converting people? Please, explain why you give a $h!t, because I don't get it.

I understand not liking the smug guy at the gym knocking your stuff, but some of you are going beyond that.

*anxiously awaits flamage*

Because of that big beautiful screen it already is a tool for watching videos. Just a low capacity tool. Next version will be 8/16GB and will rapidly increase over time, just like the iPods did. Much like the iPods, the price really won't increase proportionally to the capaciotu increase, in fact I doubt the price really will increase because its already pretty expensive.

Your answer is:

The same reason why you felt compelled to add to this thread. You feel your laissez-faire, nihilistic perspective is superior to others and you needed to point it out for everyone to see.

Nothing wrong with that, of course, but caring about not caring sufficiently to post doesn't really distinguish you much from those who simply cared enough to post.

no flames required!

LOL @ Sobe.

So the guy who tries to break up the fight is just as guilty as the guys fighting?

Nice try, amigo. :)

Actually, you'd be surprised that most users don't actually use even close to all the space on their 30+GB iPods. Although it shouldn't be that surprising when you think 100 million iPods sold, there's no way every one of those, or even 50%, are going to be filled.

Now, most MacRumors users probably do fill their iPods, so this isn't a good representation. ;)

Here's an article about a study done on storage usage on iPods:
http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/2005/09/_for_a_few_year_1.html
Here's the actual study if you want: http://www.srgnet.com/pdf/375 Tunes in My Pocket Release (Sep605-US-f).pdf

Basically, in a study of 1000+ users, mostly with 20GB or larger space, there was an average of 375 songs.

So, like I said, 8GB is more than enough for the first generation iPhone. Especially when you consider it's a phone, and no phones have anywhere near that kind of space.

I, like you, would expect higher capacities in the future though.

Basically, in a study of 1000+ users, mostly with 20GB or larger space, there was an average of 375 songs.

No where in the study did it mention the capacity of the players; its more likely that, due to their relativley low cost, there were a higher percentage of small capacity players then high capacity ones. Thus there will be an artifical low average of songs if you physically can't carry that many around with you. People will carry more music if they have more space a survey from 2 years ago is less relevant due to the capacities we have now.

I would have liked to see more specific results, like what the average on high capacity machines were. 0-5GB, 5-15GB, 15GB+.

I do know, from my own history, that if I have larger capacity I will carry more music around with me. I had cap at 4GB, which is only 550 songs, so I would have room for videos. If I had larger capacity I would carry more music around with me. I doubt I'm in the minority here.

Well, yes, this study is from 2005, but there's not many studies done on this. Probably because it's more or less common sense that people who fill their iPods are outliers and millions more people don't.
And in that study it states that iPods had higher song counts, but still only averaged 504 songs. And if this was 2005, I'm sure most polled with an iPod had at least 20GB.

And like I said, you're not in the minority here on MacRumors, because I'm sure more than 50% on these forums probably fill their iPods but that's not a good representation of the 100+ million iPods out there.

Well we can argue this back and forth, I still think its common sense that people have by now, for the most part, ripped their CD collections down which means they will have more music to carry around. If they have higher capacity machines they will fill them with more musics especially since its very easy to drag it all over.

But everyone has different needs, and I can easily make due with 8 even though 16 would have been a better initial size for something that you will want to play movies on.
