Walmart wanted to force everyone to use their own system. The world preferred NFC over the WM method. The Evil Mart of W is too prideful to admit they have lost.

Because they haven’t. Walmart is practically a monopoly due to its size and the so little competition it faces. They will never budge unless they’re cornered between enabling NFC or not taking cards at all. And even then, Walmart might dare to choose the latter.

How about boycott Walmart permanently. Such a terrible company.
Logic exercise here. China is a communist country, business is essentially state controlled, Walmart mostly sells Chinese products, ergo Walmart is the long arm of the Chinese government?

Edit: and I guess since Apple is about a 90%+ Chinese product company, the same applies to them?

Sam's Club is Walmart's warehouse store. Not every state has one and things can be found at a nearby Walmart. It's more technologically advance than Costco and BJs, though that still doesn't say a lot about Walmart or Sam's Club.
Costco is technologically impaired as management refuses to upgrade its technology which is well known about Costco esp. on many online boards about Costco. It doesn't even have price check machines or wifi.
BJs is in the middle. You can buy stuff through BJs app then pick up at the nearest store nearby, if available.

Both Costco and BJs accept contactless payments aka tap and go at the registers. Both stores do accept Apple Pay.

BJs
We accept the following major credit cards:
  • MasterCard®
  • Visa®
  • BJ's Gift Cards
  • American Express®
  • MasterPass®
  • Discover®
  • Paypal®
  • Apple Pay®
  • Japanese Credit Bureau
We also accept debit cards if they carry the Visa® or MasterCard® logos.
Easily shop, scan your item's barcode, pay and go with ExpressPay on the BJ's App.

Costco
U.S. Costco warehouse locations accept:
  • All Visa Cards
  • The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
  • Most PIN-based Debit/ATM Cards
  • Costco Shop Cards*
  • Cash
  • Personal checks from current Costco Members
  • Business checks from current Costco Business Members
  • Traveler's checks
  • EBT cards
  • Mobile Payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay)
Some Costco gas stations now accept Apple Pay and does accept tap and go touchless payment.
Costco does Not offer an express payment via app for in-store purchases.
Just a note, Costco on line accepts nearly all credit cards.

I buy stuff at Walmart from time to time. Usually cat food or motor oil. The other day I bought a tin of shoe polish there. It’s close to the house so sometimes it’s easy, but we usually “big box” at Target. The stores are cleaner and the merch is generally better. Also, the Walmart near me is in sales tax territory and the Target is not.

We do the majority of our consumables shopping at either Costco or BJ’s. Retail is kinda a rip off for anyone except people living alone. I don’t like that Costco only takes Visa, but I adapt. My credit union allows unlimited ATM transactions at retailers with no fee and I just go that route. I suppose if my debit card through the CU was a Visa and not a MC I wouldn’t care.

Either way, it doesn’t mean I refuse to shop there. I do what’s good for Mr. & Mrs. GS and if Wally World has a super good deal on something I really want, I just take my card in with me. Which I usually do anyway.

I prefer Apple Pay, and I enjoy the convenience but it’s not a deal breaker.

I wish Walmart took Apple Pay, and I went so far as to be one of those people who complained to Walmart, but that was the end of it for me. They have the right to take whatever payment form they want.

I have no interest in their App.

Which makes walmart pretty much a monopoly. That’s why the boycott would be useless. There may be a chance that they budge if the card networks corner them between enabling nfc or not being allowed to take any cards at all (cash only). But then again, Walmart might dare to choose to go cash only.

"Currently, Walmart estimates Chinese suppliers make up 70-80 percent of its U.S. merchandise, according to the Alliance for American Manufacturing."
Newsweek, 12/15/20.

Walmart has expanded to suppliers from other countries...
"However, the supply chain for Walmart stores is global, with suppliers in the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong, France, and other countries."
"Walmart is the second largest retailer in the world, following Amazon."
Investopedia, May 2022

Lots of media articles available about Walmart and how is runs its business, considering how big the company is in and out of the U.S.

Eventually they’ll have to. Chips will go away one day and then what, they won’t accept any VISA, Mastercard or AmEx?
No. They. Won't. WalmartPay works fine through their app. It truly is laughable that so many think the literal largest retailer in the country is going to fail simply because they don't accept NFC payments. 🤣

This article discussion relates mainly to in store credit card usage so didn't copy the information from Costco's website about what it accepts at its online stores which is what you've mentioned.

Wait…for debit US Costco warehouses take EVERYTHING. It’s only for credit that they restrict exclusively to Visa cards. Just so you know.

Walmart faces a lot of competition at both the national chain and local (independent stores) level plus, according to Statista, is a distant second in U.S. department store market share.

Of course not. Tracking and profiling customers and selling their data is essential to Walmart’s business model.

Exactly. However, they may have to if the card networks mandated it (which is what may have happened in Canada). But even in that case, there’s a decent chance that Walmart in the US would still refuse to enable NFC and dare to go cash only. They’re pretty much a monopoly.

Not really. Almost no one can beat walmart’s low prices. That and its size makes walmart close enough to a monopoly.

Costco.com online does accept Mastercard, just not at their physical warehouse stores.

Costco gas stations also accept tap and go contactless payment and credit card payment via Apple's wallet app.

Some people on various online boards have reported that Costco has begun to accept Apple Pay at some of the gas stations, depending on the location.

Low or lowest prices does not make a company "close enough" to a monopoly. Again, there is a lot of competition in the retail store/department store market at the national chain and local independent store levels. According to Statista, Walmart (in 2019) had around 13% of the U.S. department store market which is far from a monopoly. They aren't even the largest in that space.

The physical warehouses do take mastercard and everything else for debit cards. Again, the restriction to visa only, at physical warehouses, IS ONLY FOR CREDIT CARDS.

Yeah, pretty much every retailer here accepts NFC payments. But we’ve had tap to pay credit and debit cards for over 10 years. Apple Pay automatically works on all these. However, for the same reason, Apple Pay probably isn’t used nearly as much. It’s almost less convenient that tapping a credit card. But, the extra security is nice (and the ease of use online).
I agree, I use it occasionally but just tapping the card is more convenient particularly now with Face ID. Although if you don't have your card on you for some reason it is a useful alternative.

And it still isn’t being enough to make walmart budge. By ignoring the competition like that, walmart is acting like a monopoly even if isn’t really one.

And neither does Kroger, though I think they used to before implementing their own digital payment solution. BS

I’ll never use a retailer’s proprietary digital payment platform, unless the year is 2002 and you’re eBay and have purchased PayPal.

I don't shop at Walmart at Walmart but if I did I wouldn't use their proprietary payment system either.

I love Target, and shop there once a week as well. That said for the groceries I would buy at Target (no meat or produce) Walmart has all of the same brands and cheaper.
In my area MIA/FTL there are no regular Target’s all are Super ones. The food I buy is cheaper at Target and or Walmart does not carry it. I tend to buy more healthier and organic brands. Super Target carries many brands that are much higher priced at Whole Foods and Publix and not available at my Walmart.
