Well just like you I offer an opinion. Why is it not better to utilise to the full an existing device that's still more than capable? Why is society today so blasé when it comes to discarding perfectly good products? I too live in a building not a tent and I can run wires all around the outside of my property should I wish. Simply because you can't is your misfortune. I have exactly the same mid-2011 iMac which has been brought bang up to date with only a modest outlay. Please define all these fantastic enhancements that would be so much better had I changed it for something new?

It is in fact the lack of product innovation over the last few years to the Mac lineup which makes updating your current hardware such an attractive proportion for the financially savvy amongst us.

Absolutely correct and a great solution.

Define what? It's easier to list the things that haven't improved. Nearly every single component has improvements in the systems we are comparing here. CPU, GPU, amount and speed of VRAM, USB, thunderbolt, wifi, screen size and quality, Bluetooth specs, OS and support longevity, etc etc.

Now I agree if we get down to brass tacks there is nothing that is required to continue using a computer. But if we do that I would argue why stop there? All you need in life is a fishing pole and a means to start a fire.

Why does the OP or I need to quantify system enhancements to purchase something new? Especially consider he points out he's going from a 21" to 27".

Most of what you quote are minor speed bumps. Up the RAM throw in an SSD and a 2011 machine will really fly. I get superb read write times, far better now than it ever was when new. How many decades have computer forums been full of users chasing specs and yet how much difference in everyday use do they really matter?

Whole cottage industries are now springing up everywhere recycling and reusing gadgets that people have discarded. If nothing else this is a dreadful waste of precious natural resources.

The -real- technological improvements coming in the re-designed iMacs will have less to do with "CPU speed", and much to do with connection technologies, such as
- USB 3.1 with "c" type connectors
- Thunderbolt 3
- Perhaps revised Displayport

no reason not to wait and see what comes out or is announced next week. curious if this will be a pivotal change in the mac lineup and what type of roadmap may be in store.
