If you are just editing, vacation videos on iMovie, a Macbook with at least 1 Gig. of RAM is more than adequate. A 17 inch MacBook Pro is for geared to more professional video editors and would be too bulky for a vacationer. The Macbook can also run Final Cut Studio pretty well, should you ever choose to upgrade to a higher end video application.

I was afraid we couldn't use it for the display. Oh well. I do appreciate you guys' input.

Just an update....We bought a 15" MBP, 2.16GHZ. So far it is great.

Not sure if it whines though, anyone have a link where you can hear it?

Do you hear any whine? If you don't, don't worry about it or even try to find that noise, your just going to be worrying yourself.

Congrats on the purchase too!

How much ram did you get in the machine?

Definitely, if you can't hear it don't go looking for it. You'll drive yourself mad and start imagining you hear it. Just consider yourself among the lucky people who got a non whiner.

I tried to get one in the Apple store with the 120gig hard drive but had to settle with the stock 100 gig HD and 1 gig stick of ram. I searched and found another gig of ram for 90 and 119 on DMS' website. That sound about right??

Any other recommendations for ram places??

www.crucial.com is a pretty good place for what I've heard. There are plenty more but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

You are at an advantage with that 100 gig drive, because I believe it is 7200 rpm, so you have a pretty speedy hard drive instead of the 5400 usually in portables.

1 gig of ram seems fine, for 90 dollars, I think that is a bargain and you should snatch that one up.

If I was traveling and had to buy a Mac now, I'd get the MBP or a MB before I'd get a mini. Mini's are great if you're tight on space or need a backup solution. By the time you figure in accessories for the mini, you might as well get a laptop. When revision B comes out later, you could always put it on eBay. People are generally stupid on eBay and will often pay top dollar for discontinued items. I guess they think that since it's on eBay, they are getting a good deal. I also think people get caught up in the bidding frenzy and make bad decisions.

That's right... Yea Yea!! And we LOVE IT!!! I think I will join that Pro Care while we are in California and learn more video and photo editing skill!!!

I would recommend getting some memory from Newegg.com. Quite a few people have had good luck with this memory specifically.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231066

I will be putting some in my iMac when it arrives. It is the G.SKill PC2-5400 1GB SO-DIMM

Memory is so cheap these days and most memory comes with a Lifetime Warranty. The fact that some of these people in here have to tell you it has a lifetime warranty should say something. I am not saying it is bad RAM, but lifetime warranty became standard a while ago.

RAM is RAM, this "Apple computers require top notch memory" blah blah blah is garbage. The $83 module is just as a good as any other module out there. There will always be incompatibilites and bad memory, the same holds true for bargain bin PC's. This "Apple RAM" is a way to screw the suckers who have Macs and don't know much about hardware.

Fact is, buy RAM that you have read up on and is reasonable in price.

That $83 module has a Lifetime Warranty. From DataMem you get a 1GB module for $92 that is tested pre-qualified chips with a one year warranty, they can't back their tested memory for life? Oh yeah they can, for another $27 bucks. Yet the G.Skill module has a lifetime warranty at $83. $36 less then the lifetime DataMem Module. Do you see something wrong with this? I sure do. Don't fall for the trick like most people here.

go to dealram.com... i got a 1 gig stick from 18004Memory.com for my 12" PB and it works flawlessly, i will shop there again next week to order another gig stick form my 17" MBP when it ships June 8 . I bought the 17" for vid editing (Screen Real Estate) and Excel Workbooks at school/work... my 12" just doesn't cut it in class and in front of my customers...
