I've been upgrading my Mac from one OS to the other starting as far back as OSX. Even moved from a Power Mac G4 to Mac mini without any problems. I mainly wanted to avoid clean installs because of the hassle of resetting preferences, fonts, etc. Now however, I've noticed I seem to have an abundance of old app crap (Power PC apps that don't even run on ML) that seems to be eating up space. If I do a clean install and restore from TM will my Mac return to the way it is today without all the old apps or will the TM backup just restore them and thus be a waste of time?

Time Machine will back them up, restore them, and it'll be a waste of time.
