Warning message " iPad is hot and must shut down"

I guess the iPad has a temperature sensor built in.

My son was using it outside in the sun and received this message.

We brought it inside and let it cool for a few minutes and it worked fine.

Just and FYI in case anyone sees the same thing and freaks out.
 
So, I guess there's a limit to how much sunlight it gets before it overheats.

my god, it's not even summer yet. wonder how folks in Phoenix and Las Vegas will feel when their new toy shuts down from March to October when outside?

that seems really, really lame. I can use my laptop (except I can't SEE it very well) and touch in the summer sun.

dismaying is what comes to my mind. I'm sure at some point I may want to buy one of these things. but that would be a drag if it shuts off in the spring weather, dont you think?

Yup, the Texas summer is very near.
 
I wouldn't get my undies in a bunch just yet because the original poster did not say:

Where they were from
How long his son had the iPad outside
How long it had been turned on
How long it was in direct sunlight
How hot it was outside, even in the shade.
 
The iPhone will do the same thing if you leave it in direct sunlight or in a hot car for too long.

For iPhone, it has to be pretty hot for it to give this warning.

dude, this is April. anywhere in the US yesterday or today, it isn't HOT YET!
 
All iPhone models have had this.

Direct sunlight is the usual culprit. Here in Miami it is 85F and sunny.

The metal back will get hot in direct sunlight. A white plastic back (or a light-colored jacket or sleeve of some sort) would be a better choice for sunny-exposure situations.

There's not much that can be done about the big dark expanse of the display front, though.
 
I was by my pool today testing out my ipad ( no cover or case yet) - for only 15 or 20 minutes when I got a yellow triangle "temperature" warning stating that the ipad must cool down to continue working. It was 85 degrees and sunny. I was directly in the sun- trying to determine if I could read a book in direct sunlight- I could but it was not optimal... but any way- I brought the ipad inside and went back out for about an hour. When I came back in it was fine.
 
Um......

All i had to see was my iPad and the word pool for me to go, hrm bad idea.

Why would metal get hotter than plastic?

Do you do anything other than complain? I mean, do you have a family or a job or something else you do besides read about te iPad and complain about everything? If you are just so displayed and upset about all the terrible iPad flaws maybe you should get hobby that doesn't involve reading the iPad section of MacRumors.

I really wish that ignoring someone also hid other people quoting them and not just the original comment...
