Apple's complaint had listed up to ~25 million possibly infringing devices (phones and tablets). Depending on which ones were checked off, divide that into the $1+ billion award.

You do realize, this trial is full of holes? And will be appealed? Then, they'll appeal every single decision.
This is going to be a long and boring process.
I don't think Samsung will pay anywhere close to 1 billion.
And I'm glad, as much as I love my Macs, Apple is basicly saying: Waaaaa! Even tho everything on the Android line is totally different! We want to sue them because we are slipping!
Yes, but would this be painful for Samsung? Is $1 Billion a huge loss? Will this change Samsung (other than infringing patents) in any way? Will they go back to QWERTY?
nope. but its
1. humiliation (they dont give a damn i guess)
2. free publicity
3. might strengthen their position cause smaller android players might get scared and move to windows
4. if smaller ones decide to stay, their profits will be squeezed as they will need to pay to apple (samsung can absorb those costs).
4. worse news for google...point 3 above..

According to official news stories Apple says 22 million phones for sales of 8.1 billion by Samsung. So 1 billion/8.16 billion is about 12% fee of sales. I guess the jury had a set fee in mind. That is $12 for a $100 phone , at the customer price. If the actual price is $400 then, yeah, it would be $48.
Probably there is a penalty for late payment involved too
So Samsung sold only about 1 million of each phone on average? There were about 25 phones involved.
