iPad Pro Was not going to upgrade from the 12.9 first generation, to the 10.5 first generation, but, WOW!!!

I am currently on vacation in Atlantic City, and went into the Apple store just to browse the new products. I put a 10.5 first generation iPad Pro into my hand, and fell completely in love with promotion. I thought everyone was crazy for talking about it, but the screen refresh rate is ridiculous!

Is anyone else in the same situation that I am in? I am seriously contemplating selling my 12.9 inch iPad for the new 10.5 inch. I always thought the 12.9 inch was good for watching movies, but for every day use it is a little on the large side.

What do you guys think?

Oh dear. You made your first mistake by checking out the new iPad Pro. Prices from resellers will be cheaper by iOS 11's release and it'll be much more functional with the new OS.

The real problem is that it's a damned gorgeous, screamingly-quick device and if you try one now, all you can think about is buying one and getting it into your hands ASAP. Then you'll wish you held out until September to save some cash and it had a much better OS from stock.

It's such a great tablet. I would say wait, but... hey, we both know you're going to buy one very shortly. Sorry I couldn't dissuade you. :p

It Primarily comes down to what display size do you want? In the case that you have the 12.9 iPad Pro and you're contemplating the 10.5, ask yourself if you would appreciate The smaller display.

I will say, iOS 11 is going to be far more in tune to the larger 12.9 iPad that will use the iPad user interface, as were the 10.5 iPad will be using a 50/50 iPhone user interface. Applications and multitasking will be much better on the 12.9 iPad. You also mentioned watching movies, which I feel the larger display with still be beneficial, assuming you can accept a smaller 10.5 display.

I think it is a reasonable consideration. And one that I've been thinking about as well. I'm holding off doing anything until (A) I get some extensive hands-on with iOS 11, (B) 3-5 months have passed, and (C) sales during Oct/Nov.

Well I still have my 1st gen 12.9 and now the 10.5 to compare.

I am not going to go to the new 12.9, either I go with the 10.5 or I return it staying with my 1st gen 12.9 which covers iOS 11 better for multitask on a bigger device.

I somehow thing I would still keep my 1st gen 12.9 though if do not return the 10.5. :)

Transportability is better, too. The 12.9 wasn't a beast like the MacBook Pro when you simply wanted to watch a movie or get some quick work done while sitting in an airport, but it also isn't as comfortable to hold with one hand or set up on a plane's seat-tray.

It's crazy to me how much the subtle improvements come together to make such a big impact. I mean, you read the specs on paper, and it's like "ok so, it's faster, got a better camera, a bit improved, larger screen that's more fluid. Cool. Another evolutionary update." But then you go to use it in person, and it's like a whole different world. The 9.7" seems small, outdated, slow, and even unpleasant to use (imo) in comparison. The new 10.5" really truly just makes me want to keep using it and makes me want to find new ways to use it so that I can keep using it. The software is completely the same, and yet, I want to use the device so much more. Looks like the new 10.5" will consume me completely once iOS 11 comes at this rate. keysofanxiety's response to OP's post describing how irresistible the new 10.5" is is very, very accurate.

I urge you not to give up 12.9 iPad Pro just yet.

I’ve had the original 12.9 almost since release and love it. However, since picking up a 10.5 I find I’ve been using it much more due to size and weight. It’s simply easier to carry around and be ready to scribble a note etc.

Keeping the 12.9 as it’s the ultimate content consumption iPad (great for large format textbooks) as well as excellent for split view but, and I was surprised about this too, the 10.5 is just fine for my split view needs (Office apps).

I was thinking the same, but actually the bigger screen can't make up for the lack of promotion imo. It's gotta be either 2nd gen 12.9 or none.

Sounds like the 10.5" iPP is made perfect just for you. What are you still waiting for?

I think for previous iPad owners, the one continual comment I keep reading on this iPad forum, is that once they go to the Apple Store and test the new Promotion display, they're sold on it immediately.

I also think for a lot of people with the 9.7 pro, they see the 10.5" and think things like the larger screen, ProMotion etc are "little" improvements, but nothing major..... then go back to the 9.7 and think Wow! how small and laggy is this screen, the bezels make it look old etc etc.

I do think the reduced bezels by 40% made a significant difference visually as well. We are obviously used to seeing iPads and iPhones all these years with larger bezels.

I was loading up podcasts onto my 10.5" the other day and watched Steve announce the iPad 2..... wow, I remember when that was released and how cool it looked in white. Now it just looks like one of those first gen digital picture frames :)

I was tempted, and ProMotion does look good in person, but other than a faster speeds I don't think it's a huge upgrade from the Air 2.
