I also made the mistake of trying the new pro out in person. Thankfully, they did not have the new Smart Keyboard setup. I bought the 9.7" pro one month before this one came out. I knew what I was doing. I regret nothing!

The faster refresh makes scrolling through RSS feeds much less jarring. Even going through webpages got me excited. It's faster moving around the OS, loading pages, apps, etc, the extra screen space helps to enlarge text...and NO weird color temp variance from cool to warm in portrait!

But I snagged the old Pro for a silly great price w/ Smart Keyboard and silicon case...128GB w/ 2yr AppleCare+ for $410 new. I typed that not to boast, but to remind myself that the new hotness would be more than double the cost & have as many of you as possible help me feel better about using this slow, tiny, refresh impaired garbage! I did the right thing, right?!

Agree!

I said wow the first time I turned on my iPad Pro 10.5 after using my iPad Air 2 that morning!

I have not used them right after each other. I use my Air 2 at home and then the 10.5" in the store and didn't feel a huge difference, other than the speed that ProMotion has a hand in. Not saying there isn't a difference, I just don't feel the leap. Which is good, saves me £600! :D Maybe iOS11 will change that come September.

I was tempted, and ProMotion does look good in person, but other than a faster speeds I don't think it's a huge upgrade from the Air 2.
It is though quad speakers, nicer display, better battery life, Pencil

You have an interesting definition of "definitive iPad".
I hope this isn't a definitive iPad but I like this new direction

That deal you got is beyond sick and dope, I would never disagree with a deal that good no matter what a next gen device has to offer. :)

I am in the exact same situation - have a 12.9" and dropped in to the store to see what the new 10.5" would be like, thinking it would be more of the same and just clever marketing. Annoyingly, I love it. I've just bought a 10.5" and am selling my 12.9".

I went from a 12.9 to the 10.5. Loved the screen size of the 12, but it was a pain to hold in portrait mode and like others said not really fun to travel with.

The definite iPad is gonna be 11.5 inches or 12.9" without any bezels at all in the iPhone 8 design.

As I mentioned in another thread, I bought the 10.5 to try out, but I'm going to stick with my 1st gen 12.9. I didn't think the 120 hertz refresh rate made very much difference myself. Maybe it's my 56 year old eyes, but I could still see motion blur and even a bit of flicker when I scrolled in Facebook or swiped the home screen. I was expecting something wow, but I was disappointed. The pencil felt slightly more responsive, but is absolutely fine on the old screen too. Perhaps my expectations had been set too high!!

I am currently on vacation in Atlantic City, and went into the Apple store just to browse the new products. I put a 10.5 first generation iPad Pro into my hand, and fell completely in love with promotion. I thought everyone was crazy for talking about it, but the screen refresh rate is ridiculous!

Is anyone else in the same situation that I am in? I am seriously contemplating selling my 12.9 inch iPad for the new 10.5 inch. I always thought the 12.9 inch was good for watching movies, but for every day use it is a little on the large side.

What do you guys think?
Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but why do you think the 10.5 will be better for you? The only specific thing you mentioned using your 12.9 for is watching movies, and the only specific feature of the 10.5 that you said you liked was ProMotion. Well ProMotion doesn't come into play for watching movies, which means you'll be DOWNgrading your experience if you get a 10.5 (smaller screen for movies).

Now you also mentioned that the 12.9 seemed on the large side for every day use, but that was true when you bought it in the first place was it not? There's a reason you went with 12.9 over 9.7. Why was that? Has your situation changed since then?

Don't get me wrong, I got a 10.5 and love it. But I was also upgrading from a non-Retina Mini. The 10.5 has lots of advantages over the 12.9, but I think it's really easy to get excited about the latest and greatest, and lose sight of the reasons why we love the tech we already have.

I've been going back and forth with exactly this same thing. I love my first gen 12.9 and came across a great open box deal on a 10.5 at Best Buy so I bought it with the intention of selling mi 12.9. Honestly, I can see a little difference with ProMotion and Apple Pencil use but it's not like this huge earth-shattering difference and for most normal tasks like email, web browsing, Office apps, etc., they all 'feel' about the same.

Then, I am amazed to see how low the first gen IPP's are selling for used and I'm surely not going to give such a nice device away for a few hundred dollars. I do like the smaller size for holding the 10.5 but ther traders such as smaller software keyboard and compact apps in Split View have me wondering. I've found that after using the 10.5 for a couple days, you get to where you don't even pay attention to ProMotion and all that stuff. Going back to the 12.9 give some nice breathing room and the keyboard on screen blows the 10.5 outta the water.

They are both amazing devices and it is a tough decision that many of us are wrestling with but one thing for sure, you can't go wrong with either one. It is just a matter of deciding which features mean the most to you. Overall functionality (12.9) or portability (10.5).

I was so impressed with Pro Motion on the 10.5 that I ordered a gen 2 12.9 IPP within 24 hours of receiving it. I have a gen 1 12.9 but it's hard to go back the the slight lag and frame drops once you use Pro Motion. It makes the touch interface feel much more natural.

I think the 10.5 Pro is indeed the "just right" iPad

Size factor, I completely agree. The 10.5 seems to be the perfect size upgraded from the 9.7. When I first heard the rumors of a 10.5 iPad, I didn't think that would be that much of a size differential between the 9.7 iPad, but with the reduced bezels and more display area, It did make a difference.

I think for previous iPad owners, the one continual comment I keep reading on this iPad forum, is that once they go to the Apple Store and test the new Promotion display, they're sold on it immediately.
I think I must be one of the only people on this forum who cannot understand what all the fuss is about regarding ProMotion. Try as I might, I can't see a difference between my iPad Air 2 and my new IPP 12.9! I couldn't see a difference in store, and I still can't see a difference now, even when using both devices. I'm beginnning to think there must be something wrong with my eyesight!

That is one helluva deal son! And you're gonna enjoy it even more when IOS 11 is out!

Oh dear. You made your first mistake by checking out the new iPad Pro. Prices from resellers will be cheaper by iOS 11's release and it'll be much more functional with the new OS.

The real problem is that it's a damned gorgeous, screamingly-quick device and if you try one now, all you can think about is buying one and getting it into your hands ASAP. Then you'll wish you held out until September to save some cash and it had a much better OS from stock.

It's such a great tablet. I would say wait, but... hey, we both know you're going to buy one very shortly. Sorry I couldn't dissuade you. :p
Ew, buying second hand.

I really notice it in iBooks scrolling view. Even on 9.7 pro scrolling was laggy. Not the case on 10.5. That said, I am not blown away by it. Though with the Apple Pencil one can definitely notice a difference.

I think everyone perceive things differently and is able to differentiate with the new Promotion display. In other posts where other members have said the Promotion display wasn't what they thought it was going to be and they haven't seen the difference, and then there are others who immediately take notice of the 120 HZ refresh rate.

I don't notice Pro Motion when scrolling. I notice it most when doing the touch animations. Like when you swipe left-to-right to go back on a web page. Or on the YouTube app when you swipe down to minimize the video and then swipe right to get rid of it. The new Pro Motion display is so much smoother (less choppy) and feels more natural and responsive. I have a gen 1 12.9 sitting right next to my 10.5 to compare it to. It's a subtle difference but it's hard to unsee once you've noticed it.
