5G iPod Firmware Must Be Updated

Steve-O and his shareholders (myself included) are going to be losing big $$$ with millions of 5 & 5.5G Video iPods locked out of the Rentals process.

There is an online petition circulating to ask Apple to rectify this issue with a firmware update for older models at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ipodrent/petition.html. There's a lot of people pissed about this -- pass it on.

If technological barriers and (speculative) DRM issues are truly not impediments to older video iPods utilizing the iTunes movie rental service - and, indeed, inspection of the purchased and rental videos show that files & codecs are exactly the same -- then Apple has no reason to exclude their millions of current customers for using the service as it was intended.

I just rented one to find out I can't even transfer it to my AppleTV now... This kinda sucks, can't wait for the update.

So what if I own several Apple TV's? Can I rent on one and transfer to another?

I plan to have a living room TV, and a kitchen TV (and possibly a bedroom TV) and I don't currently plan to subscribe to satellite or cable. With Apple TV's priced cheaper than set-top boxes it would be nice to be able to outfit each location with one, and it would be even nicer if I could start watching a movie in one location and move it to another.

The apple t.v. has always acted like an ipod, rented movies can be transfered to ipods, so theoretically you should be able to transfer them to apple tv. Steve said that the update would come in 2 weeks, the rentals last 3 weeks. I think you'll be fine.

If you hooked up the apple tv to panasonic's lifewall..... You wouldn't need 3 tvs. Just one giant super tv wall.:p

No, if you rent on an Apple TV, that rental can't be transfered anywhere and must be watched on that Apple TV.

The only way to do this in your scenario would be to rent the lower quality content on iTunes and transfer it back and forth between ATVs.

Watch Movie Previews Before They Are Available - iTMS 7.6

OK, so I may have jumped the gun and rented a couple titles off iTunes. Is there anyway to get them to my AppleTV now or do I have to wait for the new update? Hope it is released before my rentals expire.

I have found something interesting in the new iTunes 7.6 I haven't seen reported as of yet.

You can watch movie previews for movies that aren't available for sale or for rent in the Itunes Music Store Version 7.6 (29).

To see these previews open the iTunes Music Store.

Then click on the 'Movies' link under the heading 'iTunes STORE' on the top left.

Then click the 'Browse' button under the heading 'Quick LINKS' on top right.

Pick 'Movie' under the heading 'Charts'.

Then click a Category under the heading 'Genres' like 'Action & Adventure'.

A list of movies will be displayed.

Notice the column titled 'Price'.

Click the Price to sort the movies from Lowest 'Price' to Highest.

You will see many movies in many categories with no price.

You are also able to double-click the movies to see the previews.

Many titles are old, but it looks to me that many movies are on their way.

I have attached a screenshot from the Action & Adventure category for everyone to see.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Enjoy watching all those Movies Previews, I know I did. :D

P.S. Check out the Movie called 'Ghost in the Invisible Bikini' under the 'Comedy' Genre for a laugh...It's not what you think it is...It's like 'Beach Blanket Bingo'...Funny Stuff

Rentals don't work on older video Ipods???
I just dowloaded one to my computer to check it out later this week.
Why not???????

Older video iPods (5G) do not have the video out chip that is an extra layer of DRM. If they allowed you to transfer a rental to one of those iPods you could hook up the Video out cable that was sold for it and hook up that cable to a DVD recorder and record that movie straight to DVD. The new Video cable and iPods (classic and Touch) prevent this.

Thus no rentals will transfer to 5G iPods.

I've also read posts stating that the clock functionality in the older iPods is not robust enough to properly handle the rental timeouts... I have no idea if this is true or not, but figured I'd post it here.

What you are seeing here is movies that are available for both purchase and rental - thats why there is no price (list view of titles is not set up to display titles with more than one price). If you click on the button that says view movie you will go to that movies description page where you will see both prices and a buy and rent button.

too late

damn i was planning on spending the weekend with an iTunes rental, but after downloading, i realized it won't be streaming to the apple TV any time soon.
Shoot, i thought the update would be ready by now.
