I received my replacement i7 2T (Week 53) this morning. Thanks to the fact that Apple allowed me to keep the previous (Week 50) unit until after the new one arrived, I have been able to check them side-by-side for the last 4+ hours.

I considered the previous unit fine in all respects apart from a narrow line of yellowing right along the base of the screen. It faded into clean white at around the height of the dock, and above that area I could detect no yellowing at all. No flickers were experienced. I reported the yellowing to Apple, not to exchange the unit, but to make sure my observation was registered in a case history for any future eventuality. However, the last of the three personnel I spoke to that day suggested a replacement in any case, keeping the one I had in the meantime. A no-lose offer, so I accepted.

The new Week 53 arrived in perfect cosmetic condition, even though the power cable was worryingly unsecured and loose inside the box, which I would have thought could cause some damage in transit. But no problem in this instance. No pixel problems that I can detect (I haven't checked iSight and probably won't because I never use it). The 2T drive is as quiet as the first unit, audible only with an ear right up to the housing. However I've been using the computer during daytime/early evening, so I haven't had a still-of-night quietness yet.

Then the main question... the yellow business.
The Week 53 unit at this stage is apparently FREE of any yellow tinge. There is no yellowing at all along the base of the screen. The display is as white at the bottom as at the top and I see no change in the warmth of gray or white panels when they are moved to any point, up or down or side to side, on the screen.
There were two other subtle differences in the screens. One is that seeing them both together, the Week 50 appears ever-so-slightly brighter on the left edge than the right (something I hadn't noticed before) – the Week 53 seems to offer no such subtle variation.
I changed the positions of the iMacs to check if one being left or right of the other made any difference, but there was no change.
The other difference was very subtle too, but I am sure I detect a small difference in the color renditions of the screens when using the "iMac" Display Profile in System Preferences. Nothing to get excited about (I doubt it is something they've "fixed" in relation to the yellowing), but the Week 53 does seem to have just a hint of extra contrast about it, at all normal brightness levels.

So, that's it for now. Unless flickering, yellowing, hard drive noise or whatever manifests itself some time ahead of now, I have an entirely satisfactory unit on the basis of a few hours use (none of that use having been very intensive to this point, I should add).

Good. Now we can look forward to ending all of these topics on the subject.

Go buy your iMacs. It's safe.

Congrats. My Week 2 2010 machine has lots of yellow, so it must not be fixed. Must just be about 1/200 displays have no issues. Congrats! Enjoy it, sounds like a jewel.

That's some good news Sir Cecil! It's nice to have someone who could compare two iMacs side by side. That said, let's see if things change as the machine heats up overtime. I am not doubting you, but it's just... in contrast to all the other 53 and week 2 ones I have heard nothing but yellow... so it's still a gamble to me at this point before pulling on the exchange game.

Can you take a picture of your screen and post it here? I 'm just really not sure how the screen with no yellow issue looks like. Mine is coming. So I need to make sure I understand the problem right.

Of course, If you dont mind.

Thanks

That's like saying you're not sure what the moon looks like without an eclipse.

I've already made my opinion known about the ludicrous, inaccurate photos shown on this subject. Show me any photo of your choice, that any person on this forum has posted relating to the gray bar test, and I'll tell you why it is worthless. Any one you like. Let's see what you base your judgments on. Any example of a photo of the gray bar test, taken by you or anyone else.
In the meantime, I'm not fool enough to post such a thing, without having access to a controlled technically-reliable environment and calibrated tools.

Glad to see that someone else like their 27" but more importantly I like your head-fi gear. There is a Ray Samuels Raptor on ebay I want to pu

I suppose it depends how much it bothers you. When i have a white background on the screen, i can detect a slight yellow tinge on my week 51 imac but to be honest it's nowhere near enough to bother me. I have to be looking for it to notice it

Can you post a pic of your screen?

I would like to see it also.

I have gone through 3 now and am awaiting the 4th.

How can that be??? We're still in week 1 at this point.
And if the calendar is changed due to time differences.
You could only be in the first day of week number 2?!
I don't believe there is a fast enough courier to make your claim possible.
Ore am I mistaken?

Evidently Apple doesn't have a week 1. I don't understand their week numbering, but people this week are getting week 2s. :)

What is so hard to understand?

Week 53 is week 1.

There are only 52 weeks / year. Week 53 is week 1.

Everything after starts with 02.

I assume he is talking about wekk 52, shortening it to 2, as in saying 09 instead of 2009 for the year. Probably way off, but possible

Just to chime in here, I received a week 53 unit 2 days ago and do not see any yellowing or flickering of the screen as of yet. After reading soo many of these posts, I was at first afraid to even try and look for it since once you notice it, it would be hard to "un-notice" it. Anyway...I finally bit the bullet and brought up all white screens, the grey bar tests, etc and I still cannot detect even a hint of yellowing.

That may or might not change with use but so far I am as happy as can be. :D

Sir Ceicil Works for Apple??

BEWARE: Judging by many of Sir Cecil's posts, it appears he may work for Apple and is distributing some FOD.

Take what he states with a grain of salt.

Apple DOES have moles here.

Mine (ordered 31/12/09 shipping estimate 15/01/10) is W9254xxxx so I presume "week 2"?

W9254xxxx is the Order number which is different from the SerialNo and as far as I know not related to the production week.
I am waiting for my i7, too, and from what I understood you will get the SerialNo of your machine only after it has been shipped.

T.

I'm sorry if it bothers you that much. I really think in the different ways of yours. If I really have a screen with no yellow problem. I will really post it here to show that Apple has solved the issue and how the uniform screen looks like.

Like you said, doing so , i might need to run into a controlled technically-reliable environment and calibrated tools. I can tell you I'm not a professional photographer but software Engineer. So I will be needed someone's help. And I'm very sure they will help me if I say "I would like to post the iMac screen with no Yellow tinge. Could you plese help me by telling me how to do it? "

If you dont want to do and it bothers you so much, That's fine. When I got mine and I think it has no yellow issue, I will definitely post some screen photos on this forum for you ;)

I cant find an answer about this so I'm going to bring up a probably really old topic. Is the yellowing caused by a bleed through of light, or is that a separate problem? When I'm watching a movie or the screen is black, I can see light shining through on the bottom? The bottom half does appear to be slightly yellow, mostly on the corners.

The light is really what bothers be the most. When its in full screen, it ruins the bottom 4 inches of the movie.

As it stands now, everyone is still speculating. There is no difinitive cause for this. Many have proposed their theories but none have been completely verifed or acknowledged offically by Apple. What you'll find are many theories as to why but they are all just guesses.
