Hello all. Sorry for the delay, my work machine has decided to have some fits. It gets reimaged tomorrow which means I get to reinstall everything.
I hope you have fun with this week's contest. I had fun with the subject. I've been wanting to run "That's Absurd!" for some time - for "reasons."
I thought we might have some more entries but that's OK. They were fun to look at and critique. As far as the critiques go, don't take them too seriously. I offer them only as a point of discussion and they are based solely my opinion. I'm always happy to talk about photography.
On to the entries...
What's absurd is that I didn't initially find it absurd. I encounter homeless daily and it has become routine - and that's absurd!
As for the photo I like the question of why is the chair there rather than in the camp. On the technical side I'm put off a bit by the clipped corner at the bottom. I would prefer either the full chair in the frame or a more aggressive crop.
This one left me scratching my head. The parallelogram format hurts my brain and I'm not sure of the message.
Is somebody growing hope for humanity? Is that all that is left of hope? Do we hope to one day get a square frame?
I might like a little different angle and framing on it. If the camera moved down and to the left it might make it a little more dramatic. The sign in lower left and looking up and into the rose more.
These first three images have had so much commentary on today's world it is absurd. It is sad that they put so much high fructose corn syrup in fertilizer that we now have diabetic trees.
Like the previous image I would like to see a more dramatic camera angle. The flat lighting and straight on angle leave me craving more sweets. I know you said you saw this in passing but it is calling out to me for some edge lighting.
*****?
It looks like you captured the illusive Golden-winged Wobbler. I don't know how they get along so well without a head but that does explain the excessive wobbling.
The focus looks pretty spot on but the motion makes it look soft in the wrong places. I would like to see the falling water to be sharp but physics disagrees. I love the detail in the claws and the motion of the water that has been flung off is nice.
Thankfully we are in the days of digital images as I expect you would have burned several rolls of film trying to capture this.
No wonder my cable is out. I know it has been tough hiring these days but they could at least supply some OSHA approved safety gear. With the proper equipment they might attract qualified technicians instead of just any Tom, Dick, or Hairy off of the street.
This is one I would like to see a different crop on. Something tighter since the top half of the image doesn't really offer much. I feel that a tighter crop would increase the drama of the tangle of wires.
I guess I have been to Burning Man too many times. I don't find this absurd but instead I'm curious about the project. Is it a work in progress? Something built then forgotten? The abandoned compound of a bunny cult?
This one I like the crop and colors. The bunny's gaze isn't confined by the edge of the image. I do want to see it more from the front but that is mostly out of curiosity rather than an image critique. Although, given the direction of the light a shot more forward might give some dramatic light and shadows.
Please have a seat on the seat made of seats. Another piece I wouldn't be surprised to see at Burning Man although I wouldn't want to transport it. I have enough gear without an extra 2500 pounds of bronze.
The image is busy but then again so is the subject. That doesn't bother me in this one as you have some separation due to focus.
That tree must be a Squeecamore! Or somebody finally got their bacon seeds to grow.
I like the color and contrast. It would be interesting to see both a tighter crop and wider shot. The tighter shot might give more drama between the bark and the excited piggy. A wider shot could make the pig a hidden surprise.
The trials and tribulations of the dimensionally challenged.
I find it interesting that the figure is more colorful than the surroundings. Although I do approve of the baby blue lamppost. I'm torn on this one. I would like to see more detail of the stamps but every day scene in the background adds to the displacement.
Now that is just silly. Dogs should only drive convertibles. That way they don't have to lean out the window which can't possibly improve driving.
I get that it wasn't a staged photo but the crop has left me flat. I would like to see the full car in frame. A tighter crop might work but you would also be more drawn to the driver.
It is little known that the Mursi people often accept squirrels into the village. Some of these squirrels embrace the lip stretching culture and Daisy here is no exception.
Nice lighting, it really shows some depth in the weathered wood. A faster shutter speed would be nice. While there is nice detail in the fence the squirrel has a bit of motion blur.

That about wraps it up. I haven't gone back over and proof read this before posting. If there are any glaring typos I might go back and fix them or you will just have to deal with it.
