Not being much of a people shooter, I found this weeks theme hard. My entry was about the best I could see in my back catalog.
Well done to the winners.
Well done to the winners.
Thanks for the win and congrats to the others too.
My interpretation of the brief was to convey some emotion that would hint at a backstory to that emotion. In this case Mrs MacRy has an ongoing back problem that has needed a few trips to the hospital for treatment. This particular time she was having some cortisone injections under anaesthetic and she was coming round from it when I took this picture. I feel a little bit of a fraud because the picture conveys something more serious I feel. But I guess that's the point - to leave the viewer wondering what is going on.
I'll get another contest up and running in a little while.
I didn't think anyone would beat MacRy ( except maybe Mrs. MacRy when she sees the picture)
I'm already quite challenged! Thanks fellas. I hope the new contest doesn't deter people as it could be a difficult challenge.
Quite often I don't get around to posting until quite late in these contests, by which time I'm already pretty sure I can guess a winner. But then the result surprises me. But thats because everyone chooses based on their own taste and what they were hoping to see.Actually I felt that after MacRy's picture, this week contest was pretty much over but gave it a try anyway. Btw I really like a new week's contest theme based on the winning pic!
I appreciate your thoughts very much!!! I apologize to you (and perhaps a few others) for not being able to appreciate the photo sufficiently to give it the credit it was due. I do think your photo was perfectly aligned with the theme... well done.
Don't apologize. You did a great job as judge. Your critique is grounded in your own vision and interpretation, and it was fair.

When I started this theme, I expected to get lots of pictures of old people, places and things, and it turned out to be a very challenging subject for me to judge in the end. There's no doubt that many of the subjects presented in any of these photos could have stories to tell. However, I'm a bit surprised by some submissions that I don't think fit this theme at all. I'd welcome a discussion on what people felt this theme was vs. what it wasn't. A photo of an old person, a rusted old car, a broken weapon, a run-down building, or even a cobble-stone street would be ideal subjects in my mind. Kids and staged settings just don't seem to fit the theme, yet some of you submitted such photos. I'm really interested to hear from some of you.
- NeGrit0: Another good photo but I'm curious why you think this is a good fit for this theme? I disagree.
Interesting, now I'm very curious as to why you disagree. I imagine it because of the statement I bolded above. For me, my submitted image clearly tells a story, whether it was staged or not has no relevance. When you saw my image was the story/message not clear? Just like gaswerks image of the children, to me, that conveys a very clear story/message. Honestly what difference does the age of the subject matter? Just because they are young they couldnt possibly have a story to tell?
Thanks for responding, and I apologize for any frustration this whole thing may have caused. Reading this, I believe there was just a difference in interpretation of the theme - I probably wasn't very clear. I wasn't looking for photos that told a story. I was looking for photos of subjects that might have lots of stories to tell. So yes, the photo of the old stuff in the loft or the vintage plane wreckage would have fit the theme well.
Very interesting contest, and one that struck me as a pretty difficult one to enter, let alone judge.
And, as @Apple fanboy has already pointed out, that is what makes this sort of contest so interesting: Everybody will approach it by bringing the filters of their own experiences and prejudices to bear.
As so often, @MacRy, a moving and powerful shot. Beautifully taken.
Personally, I also really liked @AlexH's terrific shot - you hear and see so much about young love, it is fantastic to see a wonderfully warm representation of older ties of affection and love portrayed, the warmth of which is set off against the snowy background. A life of shared and lived love? Or, an elderly couple embarking on a new love? That picture has stories to tell, and that the couple were not facing us added power to the story, to my mind.
And, on the topic of the occasional trials and tribulations - between bouts of ecstasy - of young love, I thought @Miltz's shot brilliant. Her boredom and barely concealed tedium at his tuneless efforts was hilarious.
I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on the images mentioned. Sometimes the obvious image is boring and takes no real effort to capture. In case you're wondering about my image that's a real street image and not a posed shot. I had to act extremely quick, as she made eye contact with me and I didn't want either of them to stop whatever was going on... I always wondered if they were together, or just strangers who were sharing the park bench that day...
