Thanks for the win and congrats to the others too.

My interpretation of the brief was to convey some emotion that would hint at a backstory to that emotion. In this case Mrs MacRy has an ongoing back problem that has needed a few trips to the hospital for treatment. This particular time she was having some cortisone injections under anaesthetic and she was coming round from it when I took this picture. I feel a little bit of a fraud because the picture conveys something more serious I feel. But I guess that's the point - to leave the viewer wondering what is going on.

I'll get another contest up and running in a little while.

I dont think anything involving hospital grade anesthetic could be anything less than a serious affair. I thought it was a great picture and yes, as usual, within the first few posts this week it was pretty much game over.

Well done!

Hey , Thanks for the 3rd ! I found this to be a tough contest , and suspect it was much tougher to judge . Although I didn't think anyone would beat MacRy ( except maybe Mrs. MacRy when she sees the picture) .

My entry is what remains of the Binghamton . Took people and cars from Hoboken to Manhattan from around 1910 to the late '60's . Some time after that , maybe 1980 , it was purchased , towed to Edgewater , where it is now , and turned into a restaurant/nightclub . My stories of the place start at this point . Anyway ,one of the owners was murdered , the restaurant closed , the vessel sold ( maybe several times ) , Sandy blew in the side facing the river , and it sank . Lawyers have been involved with the town re: its fate . Seems that it'll be raised and scrapped shortly .
When I was taking the picture , some guy walks up and says ' I got great stories about this place. ' Yup , lots of us do.

Actually I felt that after MacRy's picture, this week contest was pretty much over but gave it a try anyway. Btw I really like a new week's contest theme based on the winning pic! :)

Thanks fellas. I hope the new contest doesn't deter people as it could be a difficult challenge.

I'm already quite challenged!

Quite often I don't get around to posting until quite late in these contests, by which time I'm already pretty sure I can guess a winner. But then the result surprises me. But thats because everyone chooses based on their own taste and what they were hoping to see.

It is tricky trying to judge a theme you've come up with because it is always open to interpretation. But that is also something to learn from, and part of the charm, as it can open one's eyes to view subjects in various ways.

There were a lot of nice images in this week's contest! Congrats to the winners.

I appreciate your thoughts very much!!! I apologize to you (and perhaps a few others) for not being able to appreciate the photo sufficiently to give it the credit it was due. :( I do think your photo was perfectly aligned with the theme... well done.

Don't apologize. You did a great job as judge. Your critique is grounded in your own vision and interpretation, and it was fair.

I agree, that's the tricky part, isn't it? You are right, it's difficult to understand people's subjective thoughts. Yes, there is a technical element of every photography but you always need to correlate to what the OP thought the topic represents.

When I started this theme, I expected to get lots of pictures of old people, places and things, and it turned out to be a very challenging subject for me to judge in the end. There's no doubt that many of the subjects presented in any of these photos could have stories to tell. However, I'm a bit surprised by some submissions that I don't think fit this theme at all. I'd welcome a discussion on what people felt this theme was vs. what it wasn't. A photo of an old person, a rusted old car, a broken weapon, a run-down building, or even a cobble-stone street would be ideal subjects in my mind. Kids and staged settings just don't seem to fit the theme, yet some of you submitted such photos. I'm really interested to hear from some of you.

- NeGrit0: Another good photo but I'm curious why you think this is a good fit for this theme? I disagree.

Interesting, now I'm very curious as to why you disagree. I imagine it because of the statement I bolded above. For me, my submitted image clearly tells a story, whether it was staged or not has no relevance. When you saw my image was the story/message not clear? Just like gaswerks image of the children, to me, that conveys a very clear story/message. Honestly what difference does the age of the subject matter? Just because they are young they couldnt possibly have a story to tell?

VR, just out of curiosity... would one of these have been a better submission in your eyes?

Thanks for responding, and I apologize for any frustration this whole thing may have caused. Reading this, I believe there was just a difference in interpretation of the theme - I probably wasn't very clear. I wasn't looking for photos that told a story. I was looking for photos of subjects that might have lots of stories to tell. So yes, the photo of the old stuff in the loft or the vintage plane wreckage would have fit the theme well.

Now that you say it like that I see where the confusion was.

Some great images submitted this week regardless. Well done all, and thanks for judging VR.

Very interesting contest, and one that struck me as a pretty difficult one to enter, let alone judge.

And, as @Apple fanboy has already pointed out, that is what makes this sort of contest so interesting: Everybody will approach it by bringing the filters of their own experiences and prejudices to bear.

As so often, @MacRy, a moving and powerful shot. Beautifully taken.

Personally, I also really liked @AlexH's terrific shot - you hear and see so much about young love, it is fantastic to see a wonderfully warm representation of older ties of affection and love portrayed, the warmth of which is set off against the snowy background. A life of shared and lived love? Or, an elderly couple embarking on a new love? That picture has stories to tell, and that the couple were not facing us added power to the story, to my mind.

And, on the topic of the occasional trials and tribulations - between bouts of ecstasy - of young love, I thought @Miltz's shot brilliant. Her boredom and barely concealed tedium at his tuneless efforts was hilarious.

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on the images mentioned. Sometimes the obvious image is boring and takes no real effort to capture. In case you're wondering about my image that's a real street image and not a posed shot. I had to act extremely quick, as she made eye contact with me and I didn't want either of them to stop whatever was going on... I always wondered if they were together, or just strangers who were sharing the park bench that day...

Well, whether they were together or not, he was clearly trying to impress her, and she was equally clearly massively underwhelmed by his efforts. Hilarious, and very well captured.

Guys, a tip from a woman who really, really loves music, and also really loves hearing the work of an accomplished - the word to bear in mind here, is accomplished - musician - and I have had guys play pianos, guitars, flutes, saxes, and indeed, the organ in a medieval church for me: Master your instrument before attempting a public performance to try to impress someone, okay?

But, @Miltz, a really clever, well observed, funny, well taken and excellent shot. Let's just say, at an earlier stage in my life, I've been in that situation, and you captured it perfectly.

I'll bet her eye contact was either shared smothered laughter at his pathetic efforts, or rolled eyes if she was really underwhelmed at the noise he was producing.
