I'm including this as a bit of fun. :) Not going to get very far in this but it's used to transport veg. It was taken at lunch time, just off the edge of Borough Market, a very busy, bustling area just south of the river in London.

Ok we're about done here. Give me an hour or two to gather my thoughts and I'll do some judging. Some great entries this week folks, you've given me a tough choice.

Ok here goes. Remember that it is all subjective so what I say isn't necessarily the truth.

Stillcrazyman
Lovely plane and the PP you've done suits it really well, giving an old feel to the photo. Good job.

Keleko
HDR can be a devisive thing but I think it suits this shot really well. It emphasises the decrepitude of the wreck nicely. I like the framing, but if I was being picky i'd like to have seen more of the arch in the top of the frame. Nice shot though.

Fireman32
Who wouldn't want a 356! Lovely lighting and angle. Suits it very well. It's a bit soft for my taste however.

Puckman
Another HDR i'm guessing. Wonderful subject matter and location. I find it a little bright for my taste but otherwise it's a great shot.

rx7dude
Lovely light. Doesn't do a lot for me though i'm afraid.

VirtualRain
Nice! Like the depth of field and the colours. It's a nice shot.

butch10x
Really well executed sense of speed there. The car is really crisp and well framed. That's a cracking shot fella.

AlexH
I love the look on the girl's face (and on the guys for that matter). His face is a bit blown out though, which spoils it slightly for me.

Arsolu
Nice abstract of a passing train. That's it.

anotherscotsman
I want to like this one but I find it a bit busy. Perhaps if the gentleman wasn't partially obscured by the post and there was a definite point of focus. Perhaps a shallower depth of field would have worked better.

thebro20
It's an interesting subject matter but maybe having a bit more of the sea in the frame to the left would have given it a bit more impact.

Miltz
That's a really really nice shot. Love the angle, love the New York skyline in the background, love the fact that you clearly have no regard for personal safety with the oncoming train. I wouldn't change it. Great shot.

kenoh
This one doesn't quite work for me i'm afraid. The guy in the right hand side is adding nothing to the shot and the train's electronic sign is displaying more that one message, which is confusing the shot. I'm guessing it was quite a slow shutter speed.

tomnavratil
I like this kind of shot. I think you've captured your subject well and it definitely tells a story. Depending upon what is to the left of the frame I may have tried to frame him right to get rid of the slightly busy part of the boat that isn't adding much to the picture. Nice though.

Hughmac
I'm guessing it's the red one? Love those little scoots. Never actually had a go on one though.

someoldguy
The lighting is a bit flat and the horizontal angle of the river plays havoc with my OCD. It's a nice subject matter though and I quite like it.

themumu
It's a bike.

JDDavis
Nice POV shot there.

MonkeySee....
The ubiquitous plane window shot. They always look epic.

jkramerbob
Speaking of epic...that's has a very cinematic feel to it. Love the composition and the treatment. If it was me i'd be tempted to kill the shadows on the foreground and make it all silhouette.

truetray
I think the guy is a little small in the frame. Would be better if you was closer and he was framed on the right hand side looking out to sea.

Laird Knox
Wow! That's a beaut. Love the colours (presumably you added them in post?) love the lines. Love the fact that you also have very little regard to your personal safety when it comes to trains. I wouldn't change a thing on this. Awesome job!

Nielsenius
Another car at speed. This one doesn't do it for me as much as the previous one. Good effort though.

Ish
It certainly tells a story. The story of traditional English work ethics ;)

28Fiend
I love these types of shots. Really shows the hustle and bustle of New York life. Great colours. Lovely shot.

Apple Fanboy
Peace and tranquility. I love being on the river. It's a nice shot but you need a bit more space for the front of the canal boat as you've just clipped the front of it of there.

That's my critique done and dusted. I hope that you found it useful and constructive. Picking the top three was hard for me this week but this is what i'm going for:

3rd - 28Fiend - I'm a sucker for these night time city shots.
2nd - Miltz - Love the composition and element of personal danger.
1st - Laird Knox - Great use of colour and leading lines during a suicidal moment.

Thanks everyone for your entries. A nod goes to jkramerbob, butch10x and virtualrain who could all have made it into the top three.

On to the next.......

Yup, it's the red one. I had an idea to shoot a proper old London bus but being not close enough to London and with no time it didn't happen, so you got the consolation space filler :)

Enjoyed the comp, enjoyed the winners, thanks for your honest judging

Cheers :)

Well done to the winners, and a very to MacRy on the critique. I actually cropped this shot as there was another boat just in front of the canal boat. It was white and blue and bothered me.
Looking forward to the next.

Well done MacRy for judging such a diverse set and congratulations to the three worthy winners! I also like VirtualRain's shot very much.

Look forward to seeing what Laird Knox has in store for us!

For the record, my shot was not an HDR. It's a single shot, with shadows opened up in LR. I don't do bracketing and HDR (in the multiple exposure sense).

Yeah mine was crap. Thought it would work better and was a play on MacRy's usual tube themes. The display was annoying but not as annoying at the fat guy on the right who kept stepping in shot. It was like he knew what I was doing and was trying to ruin it. Do others get that? people intentionally stepping in shot or moving round to distract you?

Thanks for critique. On to the next one...

Had to straighten this out . Since I posted this , the people who live to the left of the location have been complaining that water has been running into their back yards .
IMG_4135-2c2.jpg

Not complaining ... but..... I live a few miles to the left of where Miltz took his shot , and I've been noticing that it's been a little harder than usual for me to
climb the stairs in my place . Thought it was age related , but now all becomes clear ....

Lol. Much better.

Miltz single handedly ruining New Yorker's lives one shot at a time :)

Was HDR used for this? If you don't mind me asking

No I didn't use HDR for this photograph. Ironically I did try initially and it didn't fit the mood for the photograph so I decided against it.

Wow thanks!

The colors are all done in camera. I setup the camera with the built in intervalometer taking 30 second exposures. I then walked two minutes down the track to the right shining a red light over my head to the left. I then returned down the left track shining the green light to the right. I did this a couple of times until I was happy with the coverage of the light. The trees and telephone poles to the right are lit by a car behind me on the nearby road.

In post I combined the single exposures with a simple layer blend of "Lighter Color." I picked one of the images and created a layer mask so I only had the sky from one image. I wanted to keep the stars as points instead of trails. I want to spend some more time on the sky and explore the star trails.

One fun note is that you can see the beam from the Luxor shooting up towards the center of the Vegas Glow on the horizon.

Thank you for taking the time to judge and critique this weeks contest. I will get the next contest posted this afternoon.

Thanks for the explanation of how you achieved this great shot. I wouldn't have guessed that it was achieved via light painting. I thought maybe you'd colourised it in post. Makes it even better for me.

I stayed at the Luxor on my honeymoon ten years ago this year :)

Thanks for great feedback MacRy, and congratulations to the worthy winners.

I can see what you mean about the Venice shot, definitely a bit busy and a bit poorly framed. At least there wasn't another tourist in front of me - grab while you can!

Well Done!

Thanks for sharing the wonderful photo Laird Knox (and technique)! Nice job MacRy on the detailed critiques. How did you possibly turn analysis around so quickly?

Some really lovely shots, and excellent and thoughtful commentary MacRy.

Very well done to the winners, but I must say that I really liked VirtualRain's shot.

I also really liked virtualrain's shot. It could have gone a number of different ways on any other day with some of the entries. It just so happened that the winners took my fancy that particular day. It's all subjective really isn't it.

Oh, agree absolutely. What takes your fancy on a given day, along with what your own personal preferences (and prejudices) are can govern how you come to select some shots over others.

Loved 28Fiend's shot, too (as I love those sort of night time city shots), and Miltz's was utterly arresting. Laird Knox's shot was stunning, but - because I love old cities, such as Venice and Istanbul, I also really liked the picture submitted by anotherscotsman.

As always, your own critiques were thoughtful, respectful and very well argued.

To be honest I wouldn't have picked mine either. I just wanted to go with the train trend that was happening. ;)

There were some fantastic entries and I'm not looking forward to judging this weeks. :) I recently judged a local PTA competition for kids from kindergarten up through 8th grade (I think). It was a difficult undertaking and even the youngest photographers had some excellent images and understood the theme.

Don't worry about it! I recently had to do this for the first time and wasn't sure I'd know what to say, but you know, if you just give it the best you can it'll be fine. Most of us are amateurs, and people on here are great! Everyone knows it's just that person's honest opinion. We might not always agree, especially if someone picks some type of photography we really don't like :D
