Weekly Photo Contest - 19th-25th July, 2015

Welcome to this weeks photo contest thread!

For the theme this week I asked Mrs MacRy to choose as I shamelessly used a deeply unflattering photo of her in last week's contest. She went with "Dead Husband" but I don't want to encourage mariticide so we settled on "Betrayal..." :) Could be a tough one this week folks and I envisage very few entries. So as a backup plan I will accept deeply unflattering photographs of relatives too.

Rules:

Be creative and have fun.

You may only submit one photo per contest.

Please do not comment on photos until after the judging has taken place.

The contest runs for exactly one week, starting NOW! (see time/date stamp at the start of this thread.)

At the end of the week, The Judge (last week's Winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible. (Judge has 24 hours to make decision.)

The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).

Earth (usually)
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and devastated southern Louisiana. A friend of mine had family caught up in that mess so we drove out there with some supplies and helped them out a bit. This photo was taken on that trip, while gas prices were still skyrocketing up from $1.25 a gallon the week or so before.

Wow. What a theme to choose.

I'd imagine that trying to express that theme visually may present a pretty serious challenge…...

It ain't fun unless your challenged right? ;)

I did give a get out clause of posting unflattering pictures of relatives.

Times up everyone. Clearly too difficult a subject for most people. Mrs MacRy has judged and the winners are:

3rd place - v3rlon
2nd place - rx7dude
1st place - JDDavis

Well done JD. Sorry for the hard subject this week folks. Perhaps we'll get something nice and easy this time like "Flowers in your garden" or "Selfies" - something that won't tax everyone.

Hm.

Well, I have thought about themes, and in particular, have given thought to this week's theme, and how it might be conveyed.

However, firstly, I think that there is a significant difference between 'taxing' and 'perhaps too taxing'. This is a very difficult concept to translate into an image that would be understood at first glance.

Now, if I had a digital camera (I still use film, and the endless and dismal procession of camera shops that have closed their doors means that even the old fabled '1-Hour Photo' style development is no longer an option for film development and I lack a darkroom) - or, if I had been in a position to enter this, I would have perhaps chosen something inspired by a certain notorious kiss in Gethesame - by trying to subtly point out that context is everything, even when one exchanges something such as charged as a kiss.

Seriously, while pictures can tell a thousand words, sometimes it takes many words to describe a philosophical concept, and this was a very difficult
concept to execute successfully.

This was a tough one. Thanks for 2nd place.
I liked hughmac's concept.
Congrats to JD.
For next week I vote for watches

Thanks for the vote, but nowhere good enough to win.
I think with these informal competitions it's more important to take part and to try your best.

Well done winners !!

Cheers :)

I was going to set this up properly tonight, but as you have closed it down, you can only have my joke entry as an iPhone snap.
Well done to the winners.

Sorry AFB - that was a really good idea as well. Very fitting. Do it anyway and let us see the result.
