Disclaimer: I am not a professional photographer, nor am I truly qualified to judge the work of others... I can simply view, feel and observe, then comment, based on my personal preferences. I appreciate the opportunity to post along side of the excellent and experienced photographers, and a chance to "rub elbows", as it were. My comments on the photographs submitted this week are free of charge, and most likely, worth every penny.
@Mark0 - I like this shot. The composition is sound, and the diagonal placement of the boat draws the eye into the image. I am a bit unsure of the background. On one hand, I like the simple "nothingness" of the water, but the contour of the shoreline makes the image appear to just drop off. The tones of the black and white image work well, and I'd love to hear the stories this old boat could tell.
@needfx - I am not really sure what comments I can make about this one. It's a very nice photo of a guitar on what I presume to be a chest of some sort (or is that a guitar case?), but I'm just not "feeling it".
@tcphoto1 - I'm certain that the walls of this old house also has stories to tell. The barren trees surrounding the structure lend to the image quality, as well. I am not sure that the bright sunburst helps the image, and I am bothered by the bokeh effect in front of the main subject (as I perceive it) - the house. I am wondering how this would look in B/W with a more somber, darker tonality.
@Naturebug - Who doesn't love photographs of old lighthouses? There seems to be a lot going on in this photo (and not quite in the photo). I am bothered by the angle of the shot - perhaps walking around to the left a bit to show more of the structure of the building... and the canvas "thing" in the foreground is distracting. I would have loved to have seen more detail of the weathered surface of the actual lighthouse tower, as it looks to be quite worn and wonderful.
@Alexander.Of.Oz - Baby blue baby Converse All-Stars. I love the shoes, and the scuffed, dirty marks on the toes... the placement of the shoestrings adds interest, and the overall tonality is great. The weathered wooden floor adds a certain depth to the image. I've never been a big fan of the "selective color" effect, but this one works.
@kenoh - A disused seminary - certainly this structure has seen a better day. The puddles of water add a bit of interest, as does the graffiti on one of the pillars. I'd like a bit more light to show some detail in the ceiling.
@oblomow - I really like photographing old buildings, though I am not sure if the "well-worn" subject matter was the building or the older couple on the balcony.
The three light poles through the center of the photo is a bit of an issue for me.
@Hughmac - This is an interesting composition. The rusty bolt is not "dead center", but neither does it follow the "rule of thirds". For me, the placement just off center creates a certain interest, as does the accumulation of rust on the horizontal surface. I like the exposure, and the shallow depth of field make this work. Who knew that a rusty, old bolt could be so charming?
@anotherscotsman - This is quite well done. For me, this image creates a lot of interest - was the van abandoned? Was it wrecked? What happened to the upholstery? The tones are great, the exposure is well done, and the jagged, broken windshield (windscreen?) makes me want to go looking for the passenger who was propelled through it.
@Fishrrman - Old, weathered paint is always a winner. I am a sucker for the great texture created by side-lit weathered elements. The touches of rust around the screw heads add to the quality work. Well done, sir.
@deep diver - I find this photo very interesting. The two buildings in the foreground have clearly been abandoned, and the overgrowth around them confirms that. I like the high contrast and the "almost sepia" tone, and the white vignetting effect make this a very nice photo.
@harvest_close - As a "macrumors newbie", I want to welcome you to the forums, and invite you to "jump into the fray"! I am not sure what to make of this. The high-contrast silhouette effect add a nice bit of interest, but the washed out sky, the overall dark tone and the backlit person standing on the dock make it difficult to actually see the subject matter.
@Apple fanboy - Love this - a well done image of old, worn coins and a passing shot at
@Hughmac, as well. As for the photo itself, it is very well exposed, and shows incredible detail. I love the contrast of the sharp edges of the print on the two shilling piece against the heavily worn feel of the other coin. Very nicely done.
