5½ hours to go, so get your dad jokes in, and I'll get my stiff upper lip ready ;)

Cheers :)

Well, we've had a very good turnout for this challenge, and thank you for that, some 16 submissions of all types of face(s), making the job of judging pretty difficult.

I am no expert at photography and especially at critiques, so my picks are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Anyway, here we go...

@katbel

Lovely photo, I can see the intense looks between the two subjects as they try to work out what each other are. I hope they had great play times together once they’d got used to each other.

@tizeye

Very menacing stare, good focus on the eye. I take it from the EXIF you were a distance away from the gator? I know I would be ;)

@OldMacs4Me

Is it just me or does it look like he’s laughing? Before he eats you, of course.
Good shot, nice angle, and I wouldn’t want to be the one to clean those teeth!

@Allyance

iPhone 12 Pro; you must’ve been pretty close to the squirrel, was it tame?
One thing I would have done is to clone out that bit of claw at the bottom left, and maybe the tail as well, as these could be distracting from that lovely portrait.

@squawk7000

Very inventive portrayal of a face on a suitably shaped rock; I wonder if it’s still there? I know if I’d have come across this I would have whipped a camera out too.

@TheYayAreaLiving

However old this sea turtle actually is, whenever I see one they always look old to me. Quite right really, as these have been around in this form for nearly 40 million years.
Amazing how good a camera the iPhone has become these days.

@oblomow

Looks like somebody has struck gold here. I like the night time vibe with the illumination on the face.

@mackmgg

At last, some inventive thinking, a rock face.
Love the colours of the stone (is it sandstone?) contrasted with the clear blue sky.

@Strider64

I’ve seen this one before – your dad still looks just as cheeky.
A face full of character, and probably a person to match.

@someoldguy

A representation of a wood sprite? Fascinating how these ancient ideas still appear around the place.
I like the vibrant colours around the border of this tile.

@thirsty_monk

Another kind of face, nice looking watch, well presented, and taken very recently from the EXIF. Most people here (including me) have got in the habit of archive diving instead of making a new photo.

@Darmok N Jalad

A cardinal sin, or another great nature shot?
Good focus, vibrant colours, that G9 is superb.

@Clix Pix

A sweet little duckling, with plenty of detail in the fine soft hairs. I wonder what it’s doing now?

@Apple_Glen_UK

That intent stare, looks like he’s poised to spring at you. Again, amazingly detailed photos can come from an iPhone.

@Janichsan

Interesting stone depiction of a craftsman, with crossed tools behind his head, and blinking in the sunshine. I wonder how old it is?

@mollyc

Masterful photo; it took me a second to see the muted image behind, showing 2 emotional states.

As for the others, I loved them all but unfortunately can't place everyone :)

Congratulations to the winner and to the second place; well deserved!
Thanks to the judge for being so benevolent on my work: there were so many beautiful photos.
@mollyc : how do you get a double exposure? Or is it a post operation done with a Photo app?

What a fun challenge, congrats to the winners and other entrants

Crocodile Rock is a famous landmark in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde. Although the rock is millions of years old it’s thought it was first painted in around 1913. Local legend says alcohol was involved. A fresh coat of lipstick is applied every year to welcome visitors to the island.

It has become traditional for children of all ages to have their photo taken while standing on the rock. There’s a family photo of me as baby with my brothers.

thanks for the feedback and fun.

oh, wow, thank you!

My image actually isn't a double exposure. Well, I did add a color and glitter overlay, but the actual base image of myself is a single image. I used a long exposure and dragged the shutter while using my strobe. The main face I was looking right at the strobe and I held that pose for more than half the exposure (and while the flash fired), then for the last third or so of the exposure I moved my head to look down. But because the exposure was long and with enough ambient light, the down face also registered on the frame.

Here's the exif data. I played with all sorts of shutter speeds trying to get this right. It still isn't what I had envisioned and I am going to have to keep experimenting. I also tried some with all ambient light.

BTW that dinosaur image is well outside my normal travel range, I had intended on spending the night at Writing on Stone Provincial Park, however they were getting a lot of forest fire smoke drifting in and camping would have been miserable. Still I lucked out on the timing and got perfect lighting, so I am grateful I made the trip.

Congratulations, Molly and everyone! Thanks, Molly, for explaining how you did your shot!

It seems over the past several years we haven't had ducklings on the lake -- or we'll catch a brief glimpse of them and then they're gone, usually victims of hungry predators. The little guy in the image I shared is from rather a long time ago, and I've always loved that sweet expression on his face.

Yes, I saw you were shooting with a D200 and 80-400mm? at the time.

Cheers :)

Congratulations to all. Quite a few entries and looking forward to the topic mollyc selects.

In answer to your question, I was closer than you think. There were no barriers between me and the gator. The biggest issue is squatting down for eye-level photo - but ready to spring up real quickly.

Below is a photo taken on a different outing, but same area. 10 or 12 feet away with a telephoto lens. Technically it is both a wastewater treatment plant and a county wildlife park. No pets, other than horses allowed for obvious reasons. Hike along the single track service roads on the berms separating the 16 pools the water filters through. Only vehicles allowed are county utility trucks, a tram operated by volunteers on weekends, and bicycles.

I guess you have a good spring ...in case!
Squatting down, uphill when you should retreat it's not the easiest thing to do and with a camera that you don't want to drop. Here's to the crazy ones...someone said long time ago ?

P.s. I mean it with admiration.

Dragging the shutter can be fun. This is one I did years ago for class.

I had two strobes with umbrellas and a small Fresnel continuous light. I used front curtain so that the strobes triggered when the shutter opened. Then I took a piece of purple satin fabric and waved it around in the light of the Fresnel. It was a 15 second exposure. Because of the difference in color temperature between the strobes and Fresnel light sources the purple went red when the image was color corrected.

Yes I was the photographer, model, and grip for this one. ;)

Now that I bumped this thread lets see who posts a new entry. :D
