OK, It is not a technically good photo (I only had the Nikon 1 AW1 with me), but it is a true story.

As a kid, we had a photo of a lighthouse in Ireland, hanging on our dining room wall. I always loved that photo and dreamed of visiting there someday. Four years ago, we went to Ireland and I didn't even think about looking for the lighthouse. But we spent a few days in Donegal and I saw that same photo on a placemat. I asked about it and found that it was about a 3-hour drive. We made the trek (only having a half-day to spare). As we got closer, so did the storms and dark skies. When we finally arrived, it was raining and almost too dark to even see it. I was terribly disappointed, but as we got back in the car, my wife said, "Look!." I jumped out to see the sky brighten and a rainbow appear. I took lots of pictures and we waited as the day brightened for about 15 minutes before turning dark again. Anyway, it was all worth it. (I just wish that I would have had a decent camera with me!).

Here's a fairly old picture (10 years), still taken with the simple point-and-shoot camera I had back then. The first time I was visiting the Cathedral in Münster, I happened to notice that the sunlight falling through the windows dramatically illuminated a small altar in a sidechapel.

Wow! Incredible submissions here! Someone's gonna have a tough time... ;)

I know this isn't national geographic material, but the "luck" and "discovery" elements are certainly present for this one. First, let me start by clarifying - I see at least two mentions of California above - and though it wasn't a journey away, it still wasn't "just a few minutes from home," so I'm within regulation. :D
While out venturing through the "hill country" nearby, I happened upon this stream and had to stop to catch a moment or ten. The beauty of this moment is that right behind me, there's a road; just to the left, another road; just to the right, a dirt road; just a few miles away is the interstate; ten miles to the west-north-west is my hometown of Temecula; about 40 miles or so to the south is downtown San Diego - so this little bit of serenity (among many others) lay scattered throughout. I happened upon this one and it was quite the discovery for me. That's the discovery.
The luck end of this story is, as I arrived home the afternoon of this image, my wife had informed me of a brush fire that started right near the intersection to the left and behind my location in this image.

Before any of you think anything funny - no, I am not the culprit!! I admire this beauty and was fortunate to have captured this. I haven't returned since the fire, and fortunately it was fully contained as of yesterday. Without further ado, here is my submission.

This was one I stumbled on last month while on holiday with the family in North Wales. Took the boys to a mountain zoo but on the way home passed a tourist sign for a waterfall. Thought we would check it out for a change of pace. Luckily I had my Fuji kit and tripod in the boot and got a chance to try out a new Gobe ND filter at the same time. Time and restricted access coupled with the harsh sunlight made it a tricky shot but could tinker with the in camera raw conversion to get a useful shot.

As many of you have already indicated, this will be a tough one. I'll close it later but won't have results until tomorrow, as I am going out with my camera around 2pm and won't be back until late tonight.
Additionally, I will say now that the likelihood of detailed feedback (as I have done previously) is slim, as I will not have the time. I'll give reasons for my top 3 etc though.

Hope everyone is ok with that.

Now, to narrow down where I'm going later - time to look out the maps and use TPE.
I'll hopefully end up with some more New Location Luck!

Exploring capture locations on Wednesday for my next exhibition, which will be another series of 10 long exposure images, taken on the peninsula that I live on, celebrating the diversity and amazing landscapes here, I managed this as one of two frames captured here in this exact same position as my preliminary exploration of its potential as a subject. I think I might just have something...

This is so beautiful! Do you guys ever get bad storms or hurricanes there? I live on the East Coast of the US, and as much as I love the beach, my husband and I would never move there for fear that our house would get wiped out in a storm.

Nup, we just have things like little puffer-fish and tiny blue-ringed octopus that will kill you, oh, and Great White Sharks that'll take a great chunk out of you... ;)

Right, that’s it! Competition closed. I’m on location and funny enough have 4G for once. I’ll get results as soon as I can.
[doublepost=1533405364][/doublepost]Ok, just going to write up the placing just now in between shots when the timer is on the camera as I wait on the long exposure noise reduction dark frame completing on the camera. Apologies for the lazy write up but I’m going with how good luck played it’s part in your image at a new location and the story behind it. Some people may not agree, but for me, the experience and process is all part of the “product” i.e. the finished photo.

1st: @malofx - this is an epic capture - and I don’t mean in the way the kids use the term “epic” to describe something that barely qualifies as “mildly amusing” or “quite good”. This really is an epic shot of a Landscape I would sorely love to visit some day. A well executed shot with the impending sandstorm and display of light embodying all that new location luck is.

2nd: @Indydenny - Close! Your story and desire to see a place you know very little about and which means a lot to you is topped off with the truest sense of what luck at a new location really is. Please straighten the horizon though :D

3rd: @mollyc - another great story to go with a fine display of what new location luck is. Worth the effort!

Honourable mentions:

@Darmok N Jalad - we all have images that have a lasting effect on us, usually shots involving some form of good luck. I can relate to your story and image, as my first ever digital photo is still something I love looking at.

@needfx - great image! I can see that being used in marketing or a billboard!

@deep diver - I can feel the tension and almost feel the panic in the image.

Well done to everyone else who entered.

Ok, @malofx, over to you!

I hope your adventures were fruitful @Mark0 , thanks for an interesting topic along with the judging and feedback given in between captures.

Congat's @malofx for the win, that was perfectly timed! Looking forward to the next round.

@Janichsan I really enjoy moments of the light falling in just the right spot like you captured there; right place, right time!

I forgot completely to explain about mine in relation to this contest! There were extreme winds and huge salt sprays covering the next peninsula with an amazing haze, for about a kilometre inland, which I saw as we drove back towards home! In the full sized version it's evident, but not so much in the smaller one presented. That was my bit of a rare anomaly captured, with it not being there were I took the image from and being just localised to the next peninsula.

Congrats to the winners and honorable mentions and double congrats to @malofx for not only taking a 1st , but for being in a great place at just the right time ! Been to Monument Valley twice and it's been nice and sunny both times , I got great pics , but your entry was light years better than any of mine .

This is a superb back story! Fantastic reason to go hunt for the image!
