I was debating between 6 different pictures to post, but am going to use this one from last November in Arizona:

Oh hey today is the last day for entries! Judging tomorrow!!

Okay closed to new entries! Will be back later today with comments!

Great photos, everyone! I noticed when I went on vacation last month that when I was taking photos of the beach, I had very few images that qualified for the water challenge because most of my images were heavily weighted to the skies! I have always loved skies and in my current home I am surrounded by trees. So I appreciate all the entries this week! 💕

@redshifted: what an awesome lightning bolt; they are really hard to photograph! I tried once on a beach vacation where I could sit on a covered deck but I never really did get a good one. I would love to see this in color, but that's because I am a color photographer. 🙂 well done.

@LiE_: yes, I do think some of the best skies come over water; I just love the large clouds that form along the coastline. Beautifully calm scene.

@Janichsan: another black and white image. I don't think I'd ever consider converting a sky only photo and it's interesting that multiple people chose that option. I love seeing the shape of your clouds through the contrasting light.

@stilcrazyman: Are you on the Gulf coast? I don't travel a ton, but I think my favorite skies were from when we stayed on Sanibel Island a few years ago. That orange color isn't one I see often at the North Carolina beaches. I would ordinarily want the horizon on a one-third line, but I like the symmetry you achieved here with the reflection. excellent job.

@tcphoto1: ooh, more lightning. I really liked seeing the purple color of the clouds to give context to the storm. a fascinating color for the clouds.

@deep diver: I love the juxtaposition of the cool and warm colors, and this definitely looks like at east coast sunrise to me (as your text says). I would love to see the right bottom brightened just ever so slightly but this is really lovely.

@someoldguy: I love the wide angle of this with the clouds coming in at an angle, as well as the slight reflection in the flats. I do think your horizon is just ever so slightly tilted, though. but wow those clouds.

@oblomow: those are really interesting clouds! I don't recall ever seeing any in those shape before and I really love that your horizon line is really low to make the focal point the sky. Composition really sells this image.

@mtbdudex: So night skies are one thing I really haven't tackled yet and I LOVE that you got the big dipper just nestled in the crook of those trees. I like the story you have going here with the outdoor movie, but I admit for me I'd rather crop all that out and just see the stars. 😉 But this is not an easy image to get and you actually balanced the exposure well; great job.

@Alexander.Of.Oz: Well all your practice turned out well for you this week! That sky is really dramatic and well captured. I kind of wish for a sky photo you'd shot in front of the tree, but I realize not everyone composes an image just for me. (hahaha). this is lovely and you should be proud of it!

@Darmok N Jalad: Fantastic clouds, how massive they are. I like seeing the shape of the roofline to give a sense of scale. Really amazing.

@mackmgg: well forest fires are no good at all but the atmosphere they bring....... that haze is something and I hope you are safe from anything encroaching your area. Beautiful colors and composition.

@splifingate: what a great hint of sunburst you captured! it's interesting the difference in the sky color from how the sun rays pour out from behind the cloud. it really makes you feel small (in a good way! the world is so vast).

@Laird Knox: this is really interesting and your sky is just amazing. I assume this is with a 360* camera? They make everything seem so alien. it's pretty wild and a unique effect.

@dmb8021: oh another blue hour scene! I am fascinated with this in between stage; I find it's more noticeable for sunrise and as I'm not much of a morning person I rarely see it it, but the color layering here is delicious.

@Apple_Glen_UK: what an idyllic location! I can imagine spending afternoons here watching birds and boats pass by. fantastic clouds.

@akash.nu: oh thanks for your late entry; i love the fog you captured below you and the very quiet sun peeking through. just lovely.

Okay, now for the tough stuff; soooo many great entries this week. I really appreciate you all playing along. You are all winners in my book, but since the task is to name places, here we go:

Third: @akash.nu

Second and a half: @Alexander.Of.Oz (alex gets bonus points for his practice this week! 🙂 )

Second: @mackmgg

First and a half: @deep diver and @dmb8021

First: @stillcrazyman

Thanks for considering @mollyc .

I’ll be honest, life has been crazy busy since last couple of weeks. I didn’t even get chance to look through the previous entries before posting. I just went through them now after reading the comments and in one word - my mind is - blown! - looking at some these shots!

@mollyc is too kind to offer me the podium. Thanks a lot. And a massive congratulations to all.

Looking forward to the next one.

@mollyc - I am on the Gulf coast. Sunsets make it worth living here.

So I won again ?
Great.....
Now I have to come up with something for a theme.

Yep just usual really... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@stillcrazyman was my pick too. I almost didn’t weigh in, but when we lived in Kansas, I had a great view of the skies, so you could get many good shots of those angry storms as they passed by. Shortly after we moved, there was a mile-wide F5 tornado (strongest rating) that passed by about 1/2 mile away from were we had just lived. Amazingly, that tornado missed most every town and picked up just before reaching the city.

I thought 2nd place was close. "First and a half" doesn't leave a whole lot of room. o_O

Excellent images and excellent judging. Anyone of these could have placed this week.

I never thought of lightening that corner. I'm still a minimalist when it comes to PP. I did struggle, however, with where to crop the image. I decided to leave that dark space in because I wanted to show to wide range of lighting that comes at that time of day. Maybe I caught this at the right time on the right day, but it really was that dark to my right.

This competition was a visual treat! So many fascinating skies captured in wonderful ways! Congratulations to all who participated, and to Stillcrazyman! I didn't enter since I don't get many interesting views of the sky where I live since it is such an urban area. It was fun being able to relax and enjoy others' entries!

Nope, just a pano. I experimented with doing everything wrong when taking panoramas. The tripod was setup at an angle so that the camera would swing in an arc rather than parallel to the horizon. I then experimented with different projection styles. Some were normal cylindrical projections but some used ones that exaggerated the "errors."

In this case I use the small world projection. I love the way the wall juts out. Here's the same pano using a cylindrical projection. You can see the errors induced with the messed up tripod - the horizon bends and the walls are at odd angles although not nearly as exaggerated as the other projection.

The project was printed as diptychs, triptychs and quads. The hard part was getting the crops just right. Each panel maintains the 2:3 aspect ratio so getting them to line up in a nice way was a challenge. Thanks for taking the time to judge this weeks contest.

Great theme and adjudication @mollyc ! I enjoy taking on the weekly themes as an exploration when I have the ability and with this one I found the opportunity, but didn't want to do a long exposure and astro was out as the rains and clouds have settled in again. So it was more mundane images, although i was toying with reflections of the sky in puddles, windows and even a ND filter, but then promptly forgot all those ideas! 😊

Congratulations to @stillcrazyman for a punishment well deserved! great entries from all that threw something in the ring too.

Jeff @Laird Knox I always enjoy your investigations of imagery, slanted, twisted, warped or however they come!

Thanks :)

I miss the gallery. It drove me to create new things every month. I'm trying to get out there again but COVID isn't helping. :p At least I get to shoot TTITD every year... OK, that was canceled too. I will be heading to a small gathering of friends that same week. Maybe I'll find something to shoot.

Anyway, I love sharing. I know a lot of photographers would never share techniques or locations. If somebody shoots a better photo than me then good for them! We can all learn and get better together. (Socially distanced of course.)

EDIT: I had a lighting shot I wanted to submit but that category was already full. ;)
