So thanks to everyone for some great entries. This was an extremely tough one to judge and I would be very surprised if everyone who reviews this doesn't judge it at least a bit differently.

@Allyance
More or less on topic. I have no idea if there is an ocean lurking in background or if it's more of an inland dunes area. Love that bit of mystery.

@oblomow
No idea what's root and what's tree. but you can't deny the photo is well grounded. Love it.

@tizeye
Given that the topic is wood I found the focus a bit soft, but I like that you went with B&W. That said turtles always grab me as does this image.

@someoldguy
Exactly the kind of image I was hoping to see. What stories are hidden within this image?

@dwfaust
I'm a sucker for chainsaw art.

@cthompson94
I looked it up and bark really is wood. Still the little guy won out as the main subject and (s)he is not wood. I do love the shot.

@Hughmac
You're not judging so you were definitely in the running. Given the topic I would have gone with a vertical crop, but concede that is really being nitpicky.

@Expos of 1969
Wow wood within wood within wood. Very strong image.

@TheYayAreaLiving
Glad I waited until I had a dark room to view this. There is so much character and power in that old wooden cross. Perfectly set off by the deep blue sky and the whispy clouds.

@Snowlover
Again bark is wood and the mirrored treatment leaves us with faces within faces. Love it.

@CooperBox
I am a sucker for old stumps.

@Janichsan
See above.

@cogi0490
What better use for big spruce(?) trees than hammock hangers?

@mollyc
Wow multiple points which grab your attention and keeps the eye wandering from one to the next. Not to mention the spectacular fall colours. Love it. Unfortunately the wood itself is almost all in silhouette.

@thirsty_monk
I like this image and it took me awhile to figure out what was bugging me. It's the lower right corner, just feels like it should be side grain rather than end grain. Still a very solid image.

Drum roll...... the results are

A rare tie for first:
@Expos of 1969 and @someoldguy I'm giving the nod to Expos as the last time I was the judge I hit @someoldguy with the gavel.

Second place to:
@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗

Third goes to:
@oblomow

Honorable mentions to so many that I can't name them all lest I forget one.

What a nice surprise. Beginners luck.

First, congratulations to each. It was quite a contest with great variety.

I knew I had a problem with the lens, but on my walk to use up the roll, knew the 50 and 28 would not cut it so put on the 135. It wouldn't stop down so forced into shallow depth of field. Ironically, heading back there today for the final two shots on the next roll - and test of my repair - but have a different subject in mind that landscapers were working on previously. Had planned to finish the roll yesterday on a visitor center trail (see today's POTD rocket on pad for color shot on that trip) but rain forced us from the picnic table into the car for lunch.

Problem with the lens - aperture doesn't stop down and a known issue on the 135 Canon FD since manufactured. Even repaired by Canon once, but no longer supported due to obsolete and parts no longer manufactured. Think have finally figured it out and "metal part not made" is bogus. May be a seal or design issue, but no broken part. Oil gets on the aperture blades and binds them. Disassembled and cleaned the blade unit off, but didn't disassemble the blade unit this time - just surface clean. Thought afterwards should have dropped entire unit in isopropyl alcohol rather than just wipe to clean, but if next time will totally disassemble to clean. Ironically, oil isn't anywhere near and the only place could potentially come from is the focus mechanism, seeping down if stored/positioned up, which see no instructions how to access, much less disassemble. Waiting to see how this roll develops later today as had quite a few with the 135.

Yeah, after I uploaded my picture and a couple days passed I realized it was wood as a subject and not just incorporated into the photo, but I didn't want to go through the hassle of resubmitting so I figured people wouldn't mind seeing a tiny primate.

Thank you for the (tied) First alongside @Expos of 1969 's great boat
Thank you for giving @Expos of 1969 the job of running the next contest
Thank you for not hitting me in the head with the gavel

My image was taken a few years back in the Bodie ,California ghost town . In middle of nowhere in the eastern Sierras .It's pretty neat , and kinda creepy as when the place was abandoned people left their stuff behind so you can look through windows and see their rather dusty furniture , store fittings and the like. See here : https://www.bodie.com
