Biomimetic - My eldest daughter just started High School (Scotland) and one of her first assignments in art class was to design a building that fit into the Biomimetic Architecture category. When exploring the topic it was really quite interesting to see just how much of the human-made world mimics bio structures and models. Seemingly to improve sustainability and to be clear, to benefit from the perfected patterns that nature gives us.

As an example, if we look at these fungi in the woods, and compare them to the Metropole Parasol in Seville, then we can see definite flavours of nature coming through in the design.

So, your mission this week should you choose to accept it, is to show me an example, no matter how loose, be it building, art piece, food, device, location, that shows a hint or definite linkage to Bio mimicry. Interpret this as literal or as relative as you see fit.

Judging will be gentle, but will be dependent on how annoying work has been on the day of reckoning. Try to have fun, have a bash, remember it can be anything from molecular or crystalline structure all the way up to the obvious examples like Segrada Familia in Barcelona.

Standard rules apply as below. Have at it.

  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest but you can point the members at the internet for a contextual bio image to illustrate your mimicry.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, check the dates in the title.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends 09:00AM, Sept 15, 2021 GMT.

Very interesting subject. I’m looking forward to all the entries. Not sure if I’ll have one myself though.

I think I finally found one where judging will be easier than submitting an entry. Biomimetic is a great word isn’t it?

Remember, triangular structures are valid, look at the Beijing National Stadium - The exoskeleton of the building is like a birds nest. The LLoyds building in London, the innards are on the outside - loose link but that works. Then Gherkin in London, well yeah that one is easy to see I guess.

Have fun and explore just play with it you will start to see shapes all over the place. Circles are Biomimetic structures, pyramids, triangles, cylinders, an umbrella is like branches on a tree….an aeroplane vs flying insects… Don’t over think it. I am not an art critic or a “BioPedant”, merely an idiot with a camera (or three)…. Go for it… see what you find… @akash.nu I am sure you will find something….

Too bad this is a week too late. I bet I could have found a lot of examples at TTITD. The large art pieces were missing this year so I didn’t bother to bring my DSLRs.

I did collaborate on a small piece for our camp. The heart was made in Denver and I did the fire component in Vegas. We put them together for the first time on the playa.

Not truly biomimetic but bio inspired. Just posting for love of fire. 😉

Keep that around , maybe someday there'll be a weekly contest entitled 'Heartburn" :)

interesting. i don't think i get out enough to find any man made structures that fit the bill, but i will think hard!

ohhh. i just realized i might have something that will work but it was shot on film. the lab has my three rolls and i am waiting on scans. hopefully they will come back in time.

A man made structure isnt always a building remember. Yes a bridge structure based on triangles is valid but that is becayse the triangles are loosely related to a crystaline structure and crystaline structures are in grains of sand, sugar, ice snow flakes.... I dont mean to make it sound like it is an architecture challenge.

I know I'm in trouble when I have to look up the meaning, or in this case carefully read the blurb.
He he he... it is merely a matter of timing.... today you have to look it up.... tomorrow you will recognise an example and say hey that biomimetic structure over there is really quite fascinating... and you sound clever.... I am merely a day ahead of you on the google search...

Woah hang on a minute..... are we seeing a new chapter? Laird Knox the FIRST to post in a weekly comp?

I can firmly say at this stage, Laird Knox is the front runner..... :)
I didn't really consider that an entry, but at this rate... ;)

Let's all refrain from posting so Laird Knox is rewarded for his timely entry.
In Las Vegas they have something called the Corporate Challenge. It has all sorts of events from traditional Olympic sports things like pool and poker. The track and field events are broken up by age category. As a result it is difficult for a company to find enough competitors for all the categories and ages.

One year somebody put me in for the long jump. Definitely not my sport but I gave it a go. I ran up to the pit and when I planted my foot to jump my ankle collapsed and fell face first with a distance of about a foot and a half. I tried to walk it off and about 45 minutes later I was going to give it another try. As soon as I pushed off to run I could tell it wasn't going to happen so my 1.5' entry stood (or perhaps fell). I ended up with a silver medal as there were only two people entered in my age group. 😂

So you want me to relive my glory days? :p

After reading this? Oh hell yes….. :D

I shall fall on my sword...

This is a group of alabaster eggs inherited from my grandpa, in a wooden bowl he turned himself.

Antoni Gaudi's Church of Colònia Güell is a design of blending into nature of thee surrounding woodlands by applying the modernistic style he developed and is famous for. Unfortunately, I was on a bus daytrip to Monserrat where the town of Guell was an intermediate stop and most interior and exterior of the church crypt is loaded with a busload of people detracting from the features. This is one example where the biomimetic is so obvious without the distractions.
