This is a good, but challenging (haha get it??) topic.

For me personally, 2020 was actually quite peaceful. My kids are teens, and we were fortunate enough to pivot them to private school in the fall where they are thriving this year. I love that we have stepped back from the crazy sports schedules and overcommitments. Our new dog was an unexpected joy this year (she was actually planned before quarantine). Although stressful at times, there has been an unmistakeable beauty about the year for me. I found parts of myself that I thought I had lost.

There has been lovely light in the darkness.

In thinking about this a while, I realized that for me 2020 has truly been a year mostly about photography, as I really got back into it with reignited enthusiasm and spent a lot of time shooting, editing and sharing images over the past year -- the POTD thread on MR really did help significantly in lighting the spark and then nurturing it and watching it grow.....

Photography and keeping myself busy and preoccupied with it definitely was and still is a sanity-saver throughout this incredible year which has been so terrible for so many people. Instead of fretting over being pretty much restricted to home most of the spring and into the summer, I simply picked up the camera and either shot the feathered and furred visitors to my deck or went around the boardwalk and shot our beautiful resident water birds and other creatures.

I was able to spend a fair amount of time observing and photographing Alfred, the Great Blue Heron, and so I decided that this photo, one of my favorites, would be a good representation of one of the good elements of 2020, and of my year's shooting:

Exile
Despite all the craziness, 2020 has been like most years. Work, home life, the usual and ‘this is not happening’ events all seemed to come along at full force. This photo I took at my workplace back in May when things were getting a bit serious. We deployed thousands of computers for students to do remote learning while in lockdown. A mad scramble indeed.

This image of an uprooted Limber Pine, stripped by the elements and bleached by the sun, seems quite representative of the year 2020. Image taken in early August of this year with my Fuji XP90 waterproof camera.

It has been a horrible year, but I did get to experience some of the things I like when the lockdowns were over for the first time.

Trenton Falls, New York...a nice spot to tan and drink some "adult sodas." Also, a nice place to snap some good pictures!

I am loving ProRAW! 👍

I've only used it for the one photo so far but I certainly was able to grunge-ify it in the Photos app. I have the next two weeks off and hope to get out a bit to do some shooting. I really want to see what the new cameras and software can do at night.

Seeing my senior daughters last “day” of high school end with her teachers & principal coming to our home, planting the graduate sign, giving her a hat & gown, and her own mini clap out.
How could I not cry .
(Since that infamous day, March-13 Friday, rest of 2019/20 school was all virtual, this was May 20th the last Senior day)

I feel you on that. I really have not had a chance to take it out and do some really good shooting. Basically just some good shots off my balcony and some things around the house. I plan on getting some real shooting done in the next couple of weeks because I also have them off, except for two days and that is just a video conference from home.

I got a really nice shot of the sunrise this morning off my balcony, and then a couple of decent night shots off my balcony facing part of the city I live in.

If you would like to see them, I would gladly show them to you. In the meantime, you take care, be safe and healthy...and Merry Christmas.

Godspeed
