Oh, I can step in for an emergency but you definitely have a day or two to post!

I remember the one time that I've been a judge, how I was a little disconcerted by the chatter in the actual competition thread itself, which rather interrupted what I was trying to do as I was looking through the images that had been submitted.....
I agree. When I judge I never look at the chatter until after I post the results.
It is a well shot photo. I was impressed with the sharpness and now knowing that it was something new for you makes it more impressive. The critique was what I saw in the final image and in this case didn't impact the judging. It was just to point out what I would like to see in the image. I find that talking about the details sometimes comes to me when I'm shooting - rarely, but it does.
Even when I setup for long, night exposures I sometimes miss something in the foreground or background. The more I talk about it the more often I remember to check in the field.
I found the chitchat a rather annoying interruption in between image submissions and even though I tried to quickly slide past, I still found myself skimming the comments anyway.... Funny, joking, not actually violating our rules, but irritating to me nonetheless because they were interrupting my process. I tend to focus on one thing at a time and don't like it when there is some sort of interference.....that's just me, though.
That said, though, the chatter going on now isn't in the midst of any actual competition......
It is a good conversion. If you shot both JPEG and RAW it might be fun to play with the RAW file to see if you can outperform the algorithm.For my above entry, the B&W conversion was made by Olympus—I shot in monochrome.
The key will be if she continues to enjoy taking pictures. I'm pretty hard on my camera gear so I can overlook a few hard knocks.
Please don't get me wrong, Jeff, I agree with you totally about the critique of my image for this round, but this was the cleanest of the images from this day in regards to detritus impacting the frame! I had the much cleaner images of when I spent weeks capturing parkour folks in the CBD, but they were contrived and posed/framed images, not genuinely the stuff of celebration in my eyes, so I went with this one.It is a well shot photo. It is interesting to be given a little context about where these entries come from, for me. Sometimes they are not what you ever expected in their origin stories.
It is through observation and discussion that I also learn to keep things in mind for when putting it in to application. Sometimes I do remember (most) tips and thoughts of approach to a subject or topic, but more often than not it becomes another learning experience with a minor oversight! That makes it better for me the following time, as I will remember the oversight in future. Eventually, it becomes a muscle-memory thing.
So again, there is no issue whatsoever with your critique of my entry, I learn from them and appreciate them fully as insights into a better created image.

I guess there are different people in this regards, some are precious about their images as they are and are not really after improvement at all. Others like myself are open to constructive critiques to learn and hone our art with. It is through mentoring of both an unofficial and official capacity that I personally learn the best. Constructive criticisms come under that banner for me!
I think most of us do. It was unfortunate and wrong that you and Scepticalscribe were unfairly criticized the ways you were, and in back-to-back contests. That kind of attitude, however, is the rarity.
I am like you. 🙂 sometimes I don’t like CC when I’m not expecting it and it catches me off guard, but for something like this I think it’s valuable. I usually stay nicer in my comments here than I do in other forums since we are so diverse with ability and desire.
Well “nicer” probably isn’t the right term because my intent is never to be mean. But lighter, perhaps.

I think she will, so long as she doesn’t lose the camera. We’re pretty limiting on touchscreen internet devices, so a regular camera is much easier in terms of internet safety.It is a good conversion. I do convert some to B&W, but there are times I like to just let Olympus do it. Even with JPG, there’s still a fair amount of DR preserved to bring up shadows and dip highlights.
