Thank you everyone. I got my entry in in the nick of time! On this occasion would I be able to pass this to 2nd placed @mollyc to arrange the next contest? I've logged on very quickly and I am heading to the office in a minute (some of us in the UK still have to go to the office!)

Congratulations.
You can take it easy. You have 48 hours to come up with a new theme.

Oh, I can step in for an emergency but you definitely have a day or two to post!

He may want to come up with a theme during that day or two. Otherwise, we could always have a theme "Apple_Glen_UK busy at the office"

I remember the one time that I've been a judge, how I was a little disconcerted by the chatter in the actual competition thread itself, which rather interrupted what I was trying to do as I was looking through the images that had been submitted.....

I agree. When I judge I never look at the chatter until after I post the results.

Thanks Jeff @Laird Knox for an interesting themed round and the observations. Congratulations to @Apple_Glen_UK for a lovely celebratory image. Well done to all that threw an entry into the ring.

This was at a community fun day celebrating the launch of the Parkour Park a couple of blocks away from home. It was the result of public grants given out by the state government and the tireless efforts of some vocal and enthusiastic locals. I was asked to document this with photo's on the day, so for that purpose it's quite appropriate to show the neighbours places and the murals there as it sets context, but I agree with you that for this themes purpose, a bit more clarity/simplicity and separation would have been more effective. What you can't see is the rows of young kids immediately in front of me and the hordes of adults to the left and right!

I remember being surprised at the old Canon 6D Mk I's performance with tracking and achieving good focus for this sort of thing! I had only ever used it for architecture, landscapes, macro and the very odd spot of birding prior to this.

As a result of this particular image I changed tact for the movement module assessment piece for the Diploma of photography I was studying and arranged to have time documenting people doing parkour in the city. That was much more interesting than simply panning as a car, bike or scooter went past! I've been fascinated by the human form in movement since my late teens when I worked as a technician and stage/production manager in the theatre and do see this as a celebration of life.
It is a well shot photo. I was impressed with the sharpness and now knowing that it was something new for you makes it more impressive. The critique was what I saw in the final image and in this case didn't impact the judging. It was just to point out what I would like to see in the image. I find that talking about the details sometimes comes to me when I'm shooting - rarely, but it does. ;) Even when I setup for long, night exposures I sometimes miss something in the foreground or background. The more I talk about it the more often I remember to check in the field.

I found the chitchat a rather annoying interruption in between image submissions and even though I tried to quickly slide past, I still found myself skimming the comments anyway.... Funny, joking, not actually violating our rules, but irritating to me nonetheless because they were interrupting my process. I tend to focus on one thing at a time and don't like it when there is some sort of interference.....that's just me, though.

That said, though, the chatter going on now isn't in the midst of any actual competition......

For my above entry, the B&W conversion was made by Olympus—I shot in monochrome. :) It’s her first camera, a DMC-S1 that didn’t cost me much. Good thing, as she’s ”misplaced” it a few times already, and it’s been cracked into a few rocks on our recent trip.
It is a good conversion. If you shot both JPEG and RAW it might be fun to play with the RAW file to see if you can outperform the algorithm.

The key will be if she continues to enjoy taking pictures. I'm pretty hard on my camera gear so I can overlook a few hard knocks. :D

Please don't get me wrong, Jeff, I agree with you totally about the critique of my image for this round, but this was the cleanest of the images from this day in regards to detritus impacting the frame! I had the much cleaner images of when I spent weeks capturing parkour folks in the CBD, but they were contrived and posed/framed images, not genuinely the stuff of celebration in my eyes, so I went with this one.

It is interesting to be given a little context about where these entries come from, for me. Sometimes they are not what you ever expected in their origin stories.

It is through observation and discussion that I also learn to keep things in mind for when putting it in to application. Sometimes I do remember (most) tips and thoughts of approach to a subject or topic, but more often than not it becomes another learning experience with a minor oversight! That makes it better for me the following time, as I will remember the oversight in future. Eventually, it becomes a muscle-memory thing.

So again, there is no issue whatsoever with your critique of my entry, I learn from them and appreciate them fully as insights into a better created image.

I wish more people took comments like you!!

I guess there are different people in this regards, some are precious about their images as they are and are not really after improvement at all. Others like myself are open to constructive critiques to learn and hone our art with. It is through mentoring of both an unofficial and official capacity that I personally learn the best. Constructive criticisms come under that banner for me!

I am like you. 🙂 sometimes I don’t like CC when I’m not expecting it and it catches me off guard, but for something like this I think it’s valuable. I usually stay nicer in my comments here than I do in other forums since we are so diverse with ability and desire.

I think she will, so long as she doesn’t lose the camera. We’re pretty limiting on touchscreen internet devices, so a regular camera is much easier in terms of internet safety.

I do convert some to B&W, but there are times I like to just let Olympus do it. Even with JPG, there’s still a fair amount of DR preserved to bring up shadows and dip highlights.

I'm here! I've been exceptionally busy the past week or so. I usually log on every day (several times most days in fact) but my boss has been cracking the whip! I'm not too late to start the next contest, am I?
