It's the 22nd here in aus, whilst the rest of the world is just easing into the wee hours of the day or still in the tail end of the 21st. Have a busy day today so I will be shutting this down 24 hours from now. Some great shots with an interesting mix of song choices. Will post all my guesses when I go through critiques.
It's a hard shot to get, but I've been itching to see a shot of Donald trump captioned with a certain song title from the 90's by one Denis Leary!
That works too... my first thought was a**holeshut the f*ck up?
Sorry, my camera has a Trump filter...
Now that the challenge is over...Ok ladies and gents, officially closing this down and will be back later with results and feedback.
Now that the challenge is over...
I had a different photo / song in mind but I liked the "I'll be watching you" vibe of the two Nelson photos. (Particularly with the creepy head.)
I had considered this one because I think it fits the song so well but I've used it in a past contest so I went with the Nelson shot.
Industrial Disease • Dire Straits
Ok everybody, I've been through everything a few times, and I'm hoping my first time judging is better than my first photos.
@anotherscotsman A very deep representation of the song. American Pie definitely symbolises the end of an era. I love the composition, with everything old facing into a void of emptiness with the gravel in front, and the mountain in the background further takes the death of an era, with an "over the hill" reference. I see your artistic twaddle.. and I raise it! No guess at this one, as that idea came after the post.
@Laird Knox Brilliant example of how lighting and change in perspective completely changes the mood for the same subject as @anotherscotsman. The lighting in the old Cadillac initially had me think Meatloaf Paradise by a Dashboard Light. Every Breath you Take, works very well for this composition. The lowish angle also fits another line in the song.. I'll be watching you. lurking around.
@needfx My initial guess was still by ZZ top, but the song was Legs. The cropping and black and white treatment creates a suspense and mystery that has you wondering what the rider is up to. Backlighting gives a feeling of lurking in the shadows and potentially up to no good. So you're song title, I'm bad, I'm nationwide works well.
@kenoh Another shot where black and white treatment really adds mood. In this case, it highlights the isolation with the white lines drawing you to the centre of the pic, and yet nothing there waiting for the eyes. Initially, when I saw the song choice, I thought sky brighter on the horizon could symbolise something brighter awaiting, and hence a destination, which clashes with the title. but, second look, the brightness is actually taunting "you've got all this way to come, and there is clearly nothing here. Road To Nowhere, perfect choice. I guessed Life is a highway by Tom Cochrane.
@someoldguy There's a lot going on in this photo, and it takes a while to notice there is a line of bars appropriately shot towards the end of the day, when a nice refreshing drink is in order. A cocktail on holiday, or after a tough week at work, is generally to relax, but more often than not to escape chaos. With a lot going on, and a few bars to hop into (and why pick just one), Margaritaville does thematically work well. It's hard to find a focus point, but hey, after a few margaritas who can focus. Despite the chaotic composition, it still looks a relaxing vibe, and that is the duality of a nice drink, escape chaos, or relax.. or both. How's that for more artistic twaddle to rival @anotherscotsman Oh my guess, The doors, Alabama (whiskey song)
@inkmich I took one look at this, and thought spaceship, but I also thought a spaceship with and LSD trip added, which made me think The Doors: Crystal Ship. The simplicity of the chose title, Mothership Connection, matches the simplicity of composition. Symmetric, subject with no distractions and an otherworldly sensation from the lights. The vertical beaming behind, gives a sense of transmission, or connection. David Bowie Space Oddity springs to mind as well.
@oblomow Sign, Sign everywhere a sign.. that was my guess. Even with my South African, I can't read dutch, so for me, Eh, Eh (Nothing else I can say) is perfect, because I can't. Don't know what it means, and Lady GaGa makes no sense. The way the first sign is crystal clear, and the rest blurs into irrelevance metaphorically fits the way some of these pop stars can have a lot to say, but backing it up with some depth, just becomes blurred rhetoric.
@imac wannabe This screams Top Gun Danger Zone as @jaduff46 said. Amazing shot to capture whenever you took it.
This one, not only does the song title. Dream of Mirrors, work, but so does the band name. Iron maiden. Learn to Fly by the Foo Fighters, was my guess.
@Apple fanboy My first guess, Kermit the Frog, It's not easy being green!! I should disqualify you for getting the crazy frog song stuck in my head, but the older option targeted specifically @kenoh brings redemption. Photographically a brilliant shot, but Frog chorus implies more than 1 frog, so I need a few tequilas and margaritas for it to work.
@rx7dude Nice shot capturing triumph and despair, well framed to represent both ends of the scale at each end of the photo. My guess was ABBA The Winner Takes It All.
@Hughmac Thats what music is all about, feelings and thats what has made this competition interesting. interpretation on 2 perspectives, . 16 and still kicking on, thats a fair effort for a Pooch. Great detail in the eyes, that plenty of life left. I'm still standing, not just an appropriate title, but feels like a well earned/deserved one as well. Again the black and white really adds character.
@jkramerbob My guess had I not seen the title, might have been Long Train Runnin by the Doobie Brothers. great shot, and the light sepia treatment really brings out the era. Nice lines throughout the composition.
and now for the placings. As a few have said, this was tough, photography is interpretive and so is music, linking the two, could be the title, or a lyric, or the mood of either the song or the photo location.
3rd place @needfx and @Laird Knox both captured a mood both in song and in imagery.
2nd place @kenoh a perfect capture of isolation where nothing in particular is a destination.
The winner @anotherscotsman A song about change and end of an era, and a photo that captures the remains of what once was. That was a tough one to beat from the get go.

Thanks for the great and elaborate judging Ozbok.
(as a non native speaker I used the word Gaga to describe my mental state when I saw these signs:
"No longer in possession of all one's mental faculties, especially on account of old age.
‘I want to write my memoirs before I go too gaga’")
Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)I was trying to work out what Lady Gaga song you meant!!!
Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)
I had to google it. I'm too old to actually know her songs too...
Great feedback, and well done to the winners.Ok everybody, I've been through everything a few times, and I'm hoping my first time judging is better than my first photos.

There is a copy of that image lurking around the UK. Some day you may turn around and have it staring you in the face. For some reason this picture continues to freak me out when I see it
Thanks for the notes. As for the choice of picture and song it was strictly in response to the winning image by anotherscotsman. Thank you very much for your kind comments, and congratulations to the winners.
More difficult to fit a song to a photo or a photo to a song than one thinks!
Cheers
Hugh
This is a really post-apocalyptic image - love it.Now that the challenge is over...
